1. Must-Try Breads at Sungsimdang
Located on Jungang-ro in Daejeon, the Sungsimdang Main Store is a carb-lover's paradise.
They have an endless lineup of pastries,
and fresh batches are constantly being pulled straight from the ovens.
Fried Streusel (Twigim Soboro)
This is the undeniable bedrock of Sungsimdang.
If you only eat one thing here, make it this!
It features a crispy, deeply fried streusel exterior
stuffed with sweet, comforting red bean paste. It's legendary for a reason.
Little Echo (Kouign-Amann)
If you are a fan of flaky pastries, this is a guaranteed win!
Known in Western bakeries as a Kouign-Amann,
it's perfectly caramelized, buttery, sweet, and delightfully crispy.
Almond Croissant
I grabbed this one because of its massive popularity,
and the rich, nutty almond flavor elevated the classic buttery croissant
to a whole new level of deliciousness.
Mentaiko (Pollack Roe) Baguette
This easily rivals the famous bakeries of Fukuoka, Japan!
If you're craving something savory and umami-packed, this is the ultimate choice.
Fried Kimchi Sticky Rice Ball
You might wonder why on earth you'd buy a rice ball at a bakery,
but when I saw a local grab 10 of these at once,
my curiosity took over.
Wow! Turns out Sungsimdang is a hidden gem for kimchi flavors haha.
It's a deep-fried kimchi rice ball topped with seaweed,
and it was an absolute standout delicacy.
Sungsimdang Sandwich Recommendations
If you're hunting for sandwiches,
head down to the "Sandwich Station"
located in the basement of the main store.
They had so many mouthwatering options,
but I settled on these gems.
Apple & Brie Cheese Sandwich
They packed this so generously with fresh apples and premium brie
that I honestly wondered about their profit margins!
The natural sweetness of the apple paired with the rich, earthy brie
made for an unforgettable bite.
Fresh Mango Sandwich
Silky smooth whipped cream loaded with massive chunks of fresh mango!
The bread itself is so incredibly soft
that it honestly felt more like eating a slice of mango cake.
A massive recommendation for any mango lover!
Sungsimdang Cake Recommendations
My final stop was the Sungsimdang Cake Boutique.
I arrived around 2:00 PM on a weekend,
and the viral Melon Shiru Cake (which is incredibly trendy right now in 2026) was already sold out.
Pure Cream Roll
Imagine the softest sponge cake imaginable
wrapped around fresh cream that is sweetened to absolute perfection.
A huge bonus is that it comes pre-sliced for easy eating!
You might think the cream ratio is lower compared to standard Japanese Dojima rolls,
but once you taste it, you realize the balance is so flawless you'll be craving it for days.
Beyond the Pure Roll, they also offer Matcha, Mango, and Yogurt variations.
While the classic Pure Roll is my top pick,
honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them.
If buying a whole, elaborate cake feels like too much,
I highly recommend grabbing one of these rolls instead.
4. Shopping Tips for the Main Store
One crucial thing to know: Sungsimdang is split into three separate spaces.
There's the Main Store (general breads),
the Sandwich Station (sandwiches only),
and the Cake Boutique (cakes and desserts only).
You have to wait in line and pay separately at each location.

📍 Sungsimdang Cake Boutique

📍 Sungsimdang Sandwich Station

My route was: Cake Boutique ->

I arrived around 1:00 PM on a weekend, and to hit all three
and buy everything, it took me about 1.5 hours in total.
5. Final Thoughts
Those are my top picks for the best items
to grab at the Sungsimdang Main Store.
These are universally loved crowd-pleasers,
so keep this list handy for your own carb-loading adventure in Daejeon :)
