Escape the city bustle at Daecheongho Meditation Garden, a serene haven along Daecheongho Obaengnigil. Discover peaceful lakeside views and a perfect spot for solo reflection.
A few days ago, on a cloudy autumn day, I ventured out to Daecheongho Meditation Garden for some precious alone time.
While I usually adore traveling with my family,
sometimes it feels truly wonderful to spend time alone like this, just for me.
Especially when the hustle and bustle of daily life leaves me feeling drained,
the serenity of Daecheongho Meditation Garden was absolutely perfect for soothing my soul.

Daecheongho Meditation Garden is a sanctuary where you can truly find peace amidst serene nature,
a true healing haven where you can escape the city and embrace a sense of calm.

The time I spent there, fully connecting with myself amidst nature's tranquility and peace, felt incredibly precious.
Nestled against the serene backdrop of Daecheongho Lake, the Meditation Garden
is the perfect spot to momentarily escape the city's hustle and bustle and truly find your inner calm.

While parking is free,
the lot isn't particularly spacious.
In this current season, you'll generally find ample parking,
but beware, parking can be quite challenging, especially in spring!

Daecheongho Meditation Garden is proudly one of the most popular spots along the 4th section of the famous Daecheongho Obaengnigi Road.
Daecheongho Obaengnigi Road (Course 4)
Hoban Nangman-gil (Lakeside Romantic Path)
Distance: 11 km
Estimated time: 5 hours
Course: Masandong Samgeori → B District (1 km) →Meditation Garden (1.4 km) → Garaeul (1.4 km) → Daecheongho Nature Eco Center (1.3 km) → Chudong Water Intake Tower (0.6 km) → Hwangsaebawi Rock (1.7 km) → Lotus Village (0.6 km) → Wonjusan Mountain (0.5 km) → Geumseong Village Entrance (1.4 km) → Eonggogae Pass (0.5 km) → Sinsanggyo Bridge (1.1 km)
Along Daecheongho Lake, you'll discover stunning S-shaped reed beds. This scenic trail is also a popular filming location for movies and dramas, and Chudong Village hosts a delightful Chrysanthemum Festival. Don't miss the Daecheongho Nature Eco Center, a fantastic spot for children to learn and explore everything about Daecheongho!
It's quite a challenge to explore the entirety of Course 4,
so I opted to visit just the Meditation Garden itself.
The Meditation Garden is renowned as a beloved filming location for countless movies and dramas,
boasting beautifully maintained waterfront deck paths and stunning autumn foliage, making it a truly healing promenade where just walking alone rejuvenates your spirit.

You don't need to conquer the entire Daecheongho Obaengnigi Road course to experience its charm.
If you choose to explore just the Meditation Garden,
it's an easy route where you can park and simply take a leisurely stroll around.
It's not a long walk, making it perfect for a refreshing and light promenade.

In the parking lot, you'll find a photo zone with a chair for memorable snapshots,
and a drinking fountain, though it wasn't operational during my visit.

It's only 1.5 km from the parking lot to the Meditation Garden, making for a wonderfully light stroll that you'll complete in no time!
I even walked it with my children once, and they didn't find it challenging at all.
What's more, the Meditation Garden features a barrier-free walking path,
making it wonderfully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
Since there are no restrooms further inside the garden,
it's best to use the facilities located in the parking lot before you head in.

Even though the sky was heavily overcast with cloudy weather,
that particular ambiance actually created an even more picturesque and charming mood.

Upon first arriving at the Meditation Garden, one thought immediately came to mind:
“Ah, this place was truly crafted for pure relaxation and solace.”
Well-maintained walking paths and observation decks gracefully wind through the area,
structured so that the stunning scenery of Daecheongho Lake accompanies you no matter which direction you wander.
What's more, the natural elements and thoughtful design are so harmoniously intertwined,
that the place itself becomes a source of profound healing.

Thoughtfully placed benches along the deck paths offer perfect resting spots,
allowing you to explore at your own pace without feeling rushed or tired.

Just a few steps from the parking lot,
I already felt a sense of peace settling in my heart.

Soft fallen leaves cushioned my steps,
making me feel completely immersed in nature.
The cloudy weather meant fewer people,
allowing me to take slow, quiet steps
and truly listen to the rustling of the leaves underfoot.
These small moments felt incredibly precious.

The Meditation Garden is truly enchanting, especially with its lakeside deck path where you can stroll while admiring Daecheongho Lake.

Walking from the parking lot, you'll encounter a fork in the path.
To the right is the short course (300m) that leads to the Meditation Garden via the Water Village Garden,
while going straight takes you on the picturesque Lakeside Deck Path (600m), which is a bit longer but allows you to walk right beside Daecheongho Lake.
Both paths offer their own unique charm, so I recommend taking one route on your way there and the other on your way back to experience both!

As you walk straight along the deck path, you'll find the gentle breeze incredibly refreshing.
Just standing on the deck and feeling that breeze was enough
to lighten my spirits.

I paused for a moment, enjoying the 'water gazing' (mul-meong) and letting my mind wander free.

.gif?type=w3840)
There are paths leading down to Daecheongho Lake at various points,
so I ventured closer to the gently flowing water.
I was truly surprised by how clear and pristine the water was!
There were both deep and shallow spots.
I'm absolutely certain that if I came here with kids, they'd be splashing around in the water 100%! Haha!

As the sky changed from clear to suddenly cloudy,
it felt like I was gazing at a tranquil and profound ink wash painting.
While Daecheongho Lake on a sunny day boasts sparkling ripples,
on a cloudy day, it transforms into a landscape straight out of an ink wash painting.
Isn't it incredibly charming how Daecheongho Lake shows off different appeals depending on the weather?

On the observation deck of the Lakeside Deck Path, there's an electronic viewer (like a telescope!) available.
I was able to manipulate the screen and get a much closer look at the surrounding scenery.

I could also enjoy watching flocks of ducks leisurely floating below the waterside deck.

As I walked, I soon arrived at the Meditation Garden.
Upon arriving at the Meditation Garden, a space adorned with overflowing traditional beauty appeared before me.
The traditional Korean earthenware jars (jangdokdae) and the tiled roof wall blend so beautifully with Daecheongho Lake, which stretches out widely behind them, don't they?

What could be called the highlight of the Meditation Garden,
is, without a doubt, the Lonely Tree situated right in the middle of Daecheongho Lake.
This is a large tree that has grown on a small island,
and while it's currently submerged,
I heard that during severe droughts, a path opens up, allowing visitors to walk all the way to the Lonely Tree.

The solitary island, floating alone on the wide-open Daecheongho Lake,
still offered a breathtakingly beautiful view, even on a cloudy day.

Within the garden, charming little rest areas (쉼터) and benches were placed everywhere,
and sitting there, gazing blankly at Daecheongho Lake, I completely lost track of time.
True to its name, "Meditation Garden," the space made me feel calm and peaceful, no matter what thoughts drifted through my mind.

I sat for a long time, simply gazing blankly at the scenery.
Above the tranquil Daecheongho Lake, occasional sunlight descended upon its surface, making the ripples sparkle.
In that moment, it was truly like a painting. I felt as if all my worries had vanished from the world.

While sitting on the deck for a brief moment,
peacefully gazing at Daecheongho Lake, a magpie flew over,
and it didn't even bother to fly away, completely unfazed by my presence!

The Meditation Garden is famous as a filming location for the 2005 drama "Sad Love Story" (starring Kwon Sang-woo and Kim Hee-sun),
and since then, numerous films have been shot here, making it known as a popular film set.
Many films like "Rampant," "The Fatal Encounter," and "Murderer's Handbook" were filmed here.
There are signposts indicating filming spots scattered throughout the area,
so I think it would be particularly meaningful for movie lovers.

At the end of the path, you'll find a photo zone,
and on one side, there's even a stone cairn, thoughtfully stacked by someone.

To one side, there's also a beautiful field of silver grass.
Watching the shimmering silver grass flutter in the breeze,
it truly felt like autumn was still lingering.

You can freely stroll all around Daecheongho Lake,
making it perfect for a visit with your kids,
or even with your beloved pets.

Every single view was a masterpiece I wanted to capture in a photograph.
And taking my time to notice these intricate details while walking solo
was truly one of the greatest joys of this trip.

What truly stood out to me at Daecheongho Meditation Garden this time
was the profound sense of peace
that came with the overcast weather.
It offered a charm distinctly different from the bright and vibrant energy of a sunny day.

I realized that sometimes, spending time with nature in the tranquil ambiance of overcast skies
is something truly special. It's something I wholeheartedly recommend, especially for those seeking moments of solitude.
To escape the clamor of the busy city and find your own space for reflection, there's truly no better spot.

Leaving the Meditation Garden behind, I then headed back towards the Forest Path (in the direction of Water Village Garden).

This path was incredibly quiet and peaceful, absolutely perfect for a solo stroll.
The wooden deck path, harmonizing with the vibrant maple trees, created a truly warm and inviting feeling.

Turns out, this path is also a popular filming location for movies and dramas.
Though... is it just me, or do they all seem like horror films? Haha!
With no one else around, I admit I got a little spooked for no reason! 😉
Water Village Garden

The Water Village Garden is such a charming little forest garden.

There are pavilions and benches thoughtfully placed, inviting you to pause and rest.
It's truly a wonderful spot to find healing right in the heart of the forest.

I even spotted some roses blooming out of season – what a delightful surprise!
Just imagine, when spring arrives, these roses will be in full bloom, transforming the Waterside Village Garden (Mulsok Maeul Jeongwon) into an even more spectacular sight!

If you head right from the Waterside Village Garden, you can continue your journey along the O Baek Ri Gil (500-ri Road) course – another adventure awaits!
I just came for a peaceful visit to the Meditation Garden, so I haven't explored that path yet, but it's definitely on my list for next time! 😉

As I made my way back, wrapping up this precious time of solo healing,
the serene views and tranquil feelings from the Meditation Garden kept replaying in my mind.
My spirit felt wonderfully light and refreshed.
If you're contemplating a solo adventure, I wholeheartedly recommend Daecheongho Meditation Garden!
