We recently took a wonderful trip to Maninsan Recreational Forest, nestled on the outskirts of Daejeon, for a lovely drive and a refreshing walk.

We were looking for a spot to unwind and reconnect with nature, and this place truly delivered!

It turned out to be even more satisfying than we had hoped.

With its crisp, clean air and stunning walking trails,

a beautifully designed forest playground for kids,

it's truly a healing haven for everyone, from young adventurers to seasoned explorers.

What's more, we even got to try the incredibly popular Bong-i Hottok (Korean sweet pancake),

and made some adorable goose friends, making for a truly memorable experience.

Maninsan Rest Area is a popular spot where many visitors come not only for a leisurely stroll but also to savor the delicious Bong-i Hottok.

Since we visited right after lunch, we decided to save the Bong-i Hottok for after our walk and headed straight to the forest nature trail.

Maninsan Recreational Forest is a natural retreat conveniently located close to Daejeon, renowned for its impressive lush forests and picturesque walking trails.

This natural forest, centered around Maninsan Mountain at an elevation of 537m, boasts beautifully maintained walking paths, a charming forest playground, and various tranquil spaces perfect for relaxation.

It's a fantastic destination year-round, but it's particularly famous for its breathtaking autumn foliage and enchanting winter snowscapes.

Maninsan Recreational Forest is quite expansive, isn't it?

It offers a variety of walking and hiking trails.

As we were with our kids,

we usually stick to lighter walks, which is perfectly satisfying for us! 😄

The walking trails at Maninsan Recreational Forest are incredibly well-maintained,

perfect for a casual stroll, and you'll find plenty of benches along the way for a comfortable rest.

With its lush forest and pristine air, it's an ideal spot for walking,

and the diverse range of courses means there's something for everyone, from novice strollers to seasoned hikers.

You'll find charming shelters and pavilions sprinkled throughout, perfect for a leisurely rest.

The trails are particularly stunning during autumn with its vibrant foliage and in winter with its serene snowscapes.

I even remember spotting cute squirrels on my walks before!

There's nothing quite like strolling through nature, listening to the birds chirp – it's truly a healing experience.

If you love walking, this place is an absolute must-visit!

As you wander along the trails, you'll also discover a charming stream flowing through the forest.

It's home to fascinating creatures like moss salamanders and crayfish!

Of course, in winter, they're quite elusive, no matter how hard you look! 😉

But as the weather warms up, you'll have the chance to spot these incredible creatures, both those living in the forest and in the water.

It looks like the 'Three-Line Bridge Crossing' is currently restricted for use.

Even the signboards scattered throughout the forest are adorably shaped like flying squirrels – how cute is that? 🥰

After your walk, you can even use an air gun to easily brush off any dust or dirt from your shoes and clothes – how convenient!

And get this – they even have Daejeon's longest~~~~ bench here!

It looks like a tree that's been perfectly sliced in half lengthwise! 😉

When you visit Maninsan Rest Area, this lake is absolutely unmissable.

It's winter, so it's completely frozen over!

If you visit in summer, you'll be greeted by clear blue skies, lush greenery, and even adorable geese!

During the chilly winter,

I was a bit worried about how the geese,

who are practically the mascots of Maninsan Rest Area, would be doing...

but thankfully, they're still doing great, huddled together on one side! Haha.

There's also a small but absolutely adorable photo zone!

And on beautiful days, a lovely fountain

even spouts from the pond.

The spacious grassy performance area is perfect for pups to run around,

making it a fantastic spot to visit with your furry companion dogs!

Maninsan Natural Recreation Forest boasts a wonderful barrier-free accessible trail!

This means visitors using wheelchairs or strollers can comfortably enjoy a refreshing walk.

To make our way over to Maninsan Recreation Forest,

we crossed what felt like a 'cloud bridge' (?).

To get from Maninsan Rest Area to Maninsan Natural Recreation Forest,

you'll need to cross the bridge up above and then ascend

what felt like a 'staircase to hell'! Haha.

Our eldest, who had been scrambling up those stairs,

immediately collapsed onto a bench as soon as we reached the top! 😂😂😂😂

Just a short walk further,

and you'll discover the Maninsan Children's Forest Experience Center – a fantastic forest playground!

At the Children's Forest Experience Center, there's so much to explore, including climbing features, cozy shelters, a thrilling rope jungle gym, a 'badger cave,' and even a spacious log house deck plaza!

We make our way up the slope with a fun little climb...

Of course, you can just walk up too! 😉

After our climb, we stopped for a quick rest at the shelter.

As for the Chalkboard Play area,

the chalkboard itself was broken...

and there wasn't any chalk either...

It looks like it could really use some maintenance.

At the super cute Teepee House,

it's a great spot to snap some lovely photos!

Sadly, the Raccoon House was closed. 😔

The Netting structure is in desperate need of maintenance! 😱

So many bits and pieces are falling off the ropes...

It gets all over your hands and clothes! 😫

Leaving the Kids' Forest Play Area behind

and strolling along the walking path,

you'll come across the charming 'Forest House' accommodations.

Nestled among these forest houses,

you'll discover an Ecological Pond and a Forest Playground.

While some of the natural attractions weren't fully maintained for winter,

during the beautiful spring, summer, and autumn seasons,

you can spot salamanders, frogs, and even frog eggs here,

making it a fantastic natural ecology learning ground!

The Maninsan Forest Playground is designed as a space where children can truly connect with nature

and run around freely.

With many play structures crafted from wood, it feels wonderfully nature-friendly,

offering a variety of play facilities like slides, swings, and even stepping stones.

What truly stands out is the abundance of open space for kids to run wild,

making it incredibly popular with families. It was heartwarming to see children dashing through the forest, soaking in all that nature has to offer.

Climbing the jungle gym and riding the seesaw,

and enjoying a thrilling speed racer bicycle race!

So much fun! 😄

There's even exercise equipment for adults,

but why do kids love them even more? Haha! 😂

With a spacious flat wooden platform (pyeongsang) available,

it's a great spot to rest on hot days.

Bong-i Hotteok

You simply can't visit Maninsan without trying Bong-i Hotteok, its signature snack!

After our walk, we headed to grab Bong-i Hotteok, the famous snack of Maninsan Natural Recreation Forest.

It's *the* renowned hotteok that everyone who visits Maninsan has to try at least once!

The hotteok stand was still bustling! Even though it was evening and the sun had set, and the crowd had thinned a bit... it was still packed! 😅

📌 Hotteok Buying Tip!

Have one person from your group stand in line,

and another go inside the rest area's convenience store to pay.

Of course, if you're paying with cash, you can just pay directly while in line!

Inside the convenience store, they sell tea, snacks, drinks, and more.

When buying hotteok, you can pay using the kiosk located across the way.

They were busy grilling hotteok all day long! A total of three people were working tirelessly to make them.

There are plenty of outdoor tables where you can comfortably sit and enjoy your hotteok.

Many people were gathered cozily around the bonfire lit in the center, keeping warm and enjoying the atmosphere! 🔥

Before the hotteok came out,

we first sampled the grilled garaetteok. Haha.

The chewy garaetteok is delicious on its own,

but with sweet jocheong (malt syrup),

it's absolutely divine~!

Just one grilled garaetteok will fill you right up!

The awaited Hotteok arrives!

Hotteok should always be eaten warm~

(I even packed two for my parents.)

At first glance, it seems like a very ordinary hotteok.

But strangely, the hotteok here is just so delicious. Haha.

With a harmonious blend of chewy dough and sweet filling,

and nuts inside for a delightful chewiness.

Several chain stores have opened,

but it seems none can quite match the taste here. Hehe.

Take a bite, and sweet honey oozes out – it's a fantastic combination! Haha.

One Hotteok is ~$1,

and the taste and quantity for the price are excellent.

Biting into a warm hotteok

and enjoying the tranquility in the mountains! It was truly wonderful.

As the sun began to set,

the weather got colder, so we moved inside to enjoy our treats.

There's also a tasting area inside the convenience store (rest area),

so you can enjoy yourself without worrying about the cold.

The window seats, in particular, offer stunning views of Maninsan,

making it a truly healing spot.

With the road as a reference point,

the Maninsan Rest Area is located below,

and the Maninsan Natural Recreation Forest is located above.

The Maninsan Rest Area offers free parking,

but parking spaces can be limited on weekends due to many visitors.

You might have to wait for a spot or park along the roadside.

In contrast, parking is generally more plentiful towards the Maninsan Natural Recreation Forest.
