A day trip to Daejeon, full of fun! ㅎㅎ
Honestly, at first, I only planned to pop by Sungsimdang,
but a colleague strongly insisted that Youngchun Mochi was an absolute must-visit.
They really couldn't recommend it enough!
They told me that even on weekdays, it closes by 1 PM,
and if items sell out before then, they close immediately, no matter the time.
So they urged me to visit Youngchun Mochi *before* heading to Sungsimdang.
To cut to the chase...
I immediately understood why everyone raved about it
the moment I took a bite.
Even visiting on a weekday morning,
customers kept flowing in non-stop,
and it was easily one of the most satisfying fruit mochi I've ever had.
Especially the Strawberry Red Bean Paste Mochi and
the Cherry Mochi – I'm still craving them as I write this! Haha!
1. Essential Info
📍 Youngchun Mochi
40 Junggyo-ro, Jung-gu, Daejeon
Youngchun Mochi is located at 40 Junggyo-ro, Jung-gu, Daejeon.
It's only about a 5-minute walk from Sungsimdang's main branch,
making it perfect to combine into your Daejeon travel itinerary.
It's also very close to Jungangno Station Exit 3,
so getting there by public transport is incredibly convenient.
Operating hours are from 9 AM to 1 PM.
Every morning, before dawn,
the owner personally steams the rice and simmers the red beans.
Since they operate on the principle of same-day production and same-day sales,
if ingredients run out,
they reportedly close earlier than the stated time.
I couldn't make it for an "open run" (arriving right at opening),
arriving around 10 AM instead.
The operating hours here are quite short,
and if you arrive even a little late,
your desired items might already be sold out.
So if there's a specific mochi you absolutely want to try,
I highly recommend doing an "open run."
When I visited,
the Green Grape Mochi and Banana Mochi were
already completely sold out...
The shop itself was really cozy and compact.
There's no separate space for dining in;
it's purely a takeaway establishment.
You order quickly via a kiosk,
and the owner packs your order right across from you,
making the whole process super straightforward.
2. Parking
Youngchun Mochi
doesn't have its own dedicated parking lot.
The nearby alleys are also quite busy with traffic,
and there wasn't really a suitable spot to briefly pull over.
So, I used
the Daeheung-dong 3rd Public Parking Lot,
and it turned out to be incredibly convenient and excellent.

The parking fee for up to 2 hours is
~$0 for the first 10 minutes, then ~$0 for every 10 minutes thereafter.
Pretty cheap, right?
But what's even better is that
there are always plenty of parking spots available,
and it's also incredibly close to Sungsimdang's main branch.
So you can park your car here and easily walk to Sungsimdang.
If you visit both Youngchun Mochi and Sungsimdang, and park for, say,
two hours,
the total cost would be ~$2,
but you can even get a half-price discount on that!

3. Waiting Time
I arrived at the shop
around 10 AM on a weekday.
I thought it might be a bit quieter since it was a weekday,
but there were already about three groups waiting in front of me.
Even so, after ordering,
the speed at which they prepared the takeout was so fast
that the actual wait was less than 10 minutes,
and I was able to get my order quickly!
However...
when I visited, the green grape mochi and banana mochi
were already sold out, sadly ㅠㅠ
So, if there's a specific item you absolutely want to try,
I highly recommend doing an "open run,"
regardless of whether it's a weekday or weekend.
Next to the waiting area, there's a display shelf,
but even if something isn't visible on the shelf,
there might still be stock inside.
So, to check the exact availability,
it's most accurate to confirm directly
on the kiosk order screen!
3. Storage Tips
While getting my mochi packaged,
I asked the owner for detailed storage instructions.
The best method the owner shared was,
naturally, to eat them as quickly as possible after purchase.
Since these are made fresh early in the morning on the same day,
the unique chewy texture might diminish over time.
However, regular mochi varieties without fruit
can be frozen for later!
I was told that if you freeze them
and then let them naturally thaw at room temperature before eating,
you can enjoy them as deliciously as when they were first made.
But definitely don't do that with fruit mochi!
If you freeze fruit and then thaw it, the fruit juices will all seep out
and the texture will become mushy.
So, they strongly recommend finishing all fruit mochi
on the same day you buy them.
That's why as soon as I got home,
I devoured all the fruit mochi in a flash, LOL!
I really had no choice, right? 😉
After trying them myself,
the freshness of the raw fruit and the moist texture are key,
so I highly recommend eating fruit mochi immediately on the same day
without freezing them~!
5. Taste Review
I picked up two Original Mochi,
as well as Strawberry Red Bean Paste Mochi, Strawberry White Bean Paste Mochi,
Tangerine Mochi, and Cherry Mochi.
Since I visited in the middle of summer,
I bought an additional insulated bag for ~$1
to keep the mochi from spoiling on the way home.
The price was ~$1 for Original Mochi,
and ~$1 for Fruit Mochi.
Even my friends who came along
were captivated and filled their baskets with nearly the maximum purchase quantity of 10 items per person, LOL!
First, I tried the Strawberry White Bean Paste Mochi,
and honestly, it was a bit more ordinary than I expected.
The visual, with the strawberry popping out of the mochi,
was absolutely beautiful, but
the strawberry I picked wasn't quite sweet enough,
and the characteristic sweetness of the white bean paste was more prominent.
On the other hand, the Strawberry Red Bean Paste Mochi
was absolutely amazing~!!!
The strawberry was perfectly encased within the chewy mochi,
and it was much richer and juicier.
I guess that's why, being wrapped inside!
The sweetness of the red bean paste and the refreshing tartness of the strawberry
blended together perfectly,
making it feel like I was enjoying a very luxurious dessert, haha!
All my friends who were with me also unanimously
chose this menu item as the Best.
Even after trying several different kinds myself,
I truly believe this is a must-buy, and you should grab at least two!
But you know what?
Personally, the hidden winner of the day was none other than the
Cherry Mochi.
Honestly, I just grabbed one without much expectation, but
the distinct aroma of cherry spread intensely,
the juices burst forth, and
there were cherries both inside and out,
The flavors were incredibly rich and vibrant!!
Since I don't usually eat cherries all that often,
it felt even more special and delicious, which was a lovely surprise! 😊
It wasn't overly sweet and was delightfully refreshing,
even my husband, who isn't usually a big fan of sweets,
really enjoyed this one!
Sadly, the tangerine mochi didn't quite hit the mark for me...
Given it's summer, and not prime tangerine season,
the fruit itself lacked a little bit of that natural sweetness,
and its presence wasn't as pronounced as I'd hoped.
I wonder if it would be a whole different experience if I tried it when made with fresh, in-season tangerines in winter.
If you're planning an adventure to Daejeon,
it might feel a little incomplete to just hit up Sungsimdang and head home.
Youngchun Mochi often has a line even on weekdays,
and for the most popular items, you'll want to plan an 'open run' (arriving right when they open)
to snag them!
So, if you're hoping to grab a variety of flavors and try them all,
definitely aim for an 'open run',
and for the fruit mochi, I recommend only getting as much as you can eat that day,
as they're best enjoyed fresh!
