A Charming Restaurant in Yeonnam-dong
Madera
A friend had something special to celebrate, so they generously offered to treat me to a delicious dinner. That's how we ended up discovering Madera in Yeonnam-dong, and I'm excited to share my honest review of our experience.

Madera is nestled towards the quieter edge of Yeonnam-dong, conveniently close to Gajwa Station. This particular stretch of the neighborhood has become quite the hotspot recently, with an array of trendy restaurants and cafes constantly emerging.

The interior is beautifully designed with warm wood tones and subtle, ambient lighting, creating an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. It's truly an ideal setting for a romantic date or a peaceful, special occasion meal.
We made a reservation for the 5:00 PM dinner opening, right after their afternoon break.

Arriving a little early, we had the pleasure of being the very first guests for dinner. This meant we secured a lovely window seat, allowing us to enjoy the fantastic ambiance as the evening began. :)

Yeonnam Madera: Menu & Prices
Did you know that "Madera" means 'wood' in Spanish? It's a fitting name for this unique establishment!
The restaurant's concept revolves around creating a tranquil, forest-like escape in the city. They offer dishes infused with woody aromas, crafted from fresh seasonal ingredients, all perfectly complemented by a diverse selection of wines. It's truly impressive that even their menu cover is made of wood, reflecting their dedication to the theme!

While Madera is also renowned for its fresh pasta, I found myself craving something grilled that day. The idea of wood-smoked grilled dishes truly piqued my curiosity!
After a delightful debate, my friend and I (two women) decided on the following:
Hanwoo Chipotle ~$9
Polpo ~$21
Duck ~$28

They also offered a separate drink menu and an extensive wine list. However, since my friend was driving, we opted to skip the wine and simply savor our meal.

Initially, I considered adding sourdough bread, thinking we might need more to complement our grilled selections. However, the attentive staff kindly informed us that two complimentary pieces of sourdough were served as an amuse-bouche, so we didn't need to order extra.
Yeonnam Madera's complimentary bread arrived in a charming wooden box, infused with a lovely smoky aroma. The bread itself was delicious, and the subtle, inviting smoky scent was a delightful touch that prepared us for the meal ahead. :)
1. Starter: Hanwoo Chipotle

Our first dish was the **Hanwoo Chipotle**, and its presentation alone earned top marks! It featured crispy brioche bread topped with a rich chipotle sauce and a tartar of premium Hanwoo (Korean beef).
The distinct, high-quality flavor of the Hanwoo truly shone through, beautifully enhanced by the chipotle sauce, which added a wonderful, smoky depth.

It wasn't overly intense but perfectly awakened our palates, making it an excellent choice for a starter. At just ~$9, it's a fantastic value, and I wholeheartedly recommend trying it!
2. Grilled Dish: Duck

Next up was one of their grilled specialties, the **Duck**. We had noted that duck and salchisal (chuck flap steak) could take over 25 minutes to prepare, so we were mentally preparing for a leisurely wait. To our pleasant surprise, it arrived quite quickly, alongside the Polpo!

The duck was cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside and incredibly tender and juicy on the inside, offering a delightful contrast in textures.
The natural richness of the duck was expertly managed, not at all overwhelming, allowing us to savor every succulent bite. The accompanying pumpkin sauce was subtle and harmonious, letting the duck's inherent flavor truly shine without overpowering it.
3. Grilled Dish: Polpo (Octopus)

Finally, the dish I was most excited for: the **Polpo**! The octopus was incredibly tender, meltingly soft rather than chewy, and boasted a delicate grilled aroma that became richer with every bite.

The paprika sauce underneath wasn't overly sweet; it had just the right amount of savory depth and umami that complemented the octopus beautifully, creating a perfect harmony of flavors.
Served with delicious side garnishes like beans, potatoes, and bacon, the dish was well-balanced and far from monotonous, adding delightful textures and flavors to each forkful.
Yeonnam Madera: Final Thoughts
Overall, Yeonnam Madera left us with truly wonderful memories. The food quality was exceptional, and the ambiance was perfectly curated for a special evening!
It strikes a perfect balance—not too casual, yet not overly formal—making it an ideal choice for romantic dates, anniversaries, or any special gathering where you want to impress.
If you're searching for a restaurant in Yeonnam-dong that offers both exquisite food and a lovely atmosphere without being overly crowded or stuffy, Madera is a place you'll undoubtedly be satisfied with.
