China Xi'an The Great Qin (Juju Daqin)
Synopsis
This performance tells the story of Emperor Qin's unification of China,
inspired by the character Heifu, who appears in letters discovered
in a tomb from China's Qin Dynasty era.
*
Set against the backdrop of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's unification of China,
Juju Daqin is a historical performance depicting the life of an ordinary young man named Heifu.
Heifu, a prisoner of war, is rescued by a Qin craftsman and begins a new life, falling in love with the craftsman's daughter, Hua.
Impressed by King Qin's goal of unifying the world, Heifu becomes a soldier.
He earns distinction by preventing an assassination attempt on King Qin, promising his lover he will return to marry her once the war ends.
The Qin Dynasty eventually conquers the six states and unifies China,
but Heifu loses his life in the final battle.
Rather than focusing solely on Emperor Qin Shi Huang's achievements, the performance also showcases the lives and sacrifices of ordinary people who lived through these monumental historical events.

1. The Beginning — Terracotta Army Excavation Site
The performance kicks off at a modern-day Terracotta Army excavation site,
transporting the audience back to the Qin Dynasty, towards the end of the Warring States period, about 2,200 years ago.
From this moment, the audience seats also begin to move forward, and the main story truly unfolds.

4. Jing Ke Attempts to Assassinate the Qin King

[ Xi'an, China: The Great Qin Performance
Seat Selection and Ticket Prices ]

The Great Qin show in Xi'an, China, operates on a
designated seating system,
with prices varying depending on seat location and date.
The cheapest C-section tickets for The Great Qin show are
around ~$53, but

Given that the entire seating area moves back and forth, bringing you closer to and then further from the stage,
I'd recommend against seats too far back.
Instead, I highly recommend reserving seats in at least the VIP or A section.
For The Great Qin show, which unfolds with Xi'an's Terracotta Army as its backdrop, VIP section tickets are
around ~$98,
If you apply a discount coupon on Klook, you might even snag them for a little less!

I'd read reviews saying that the closer you are to the front for The Great Qin Terracotta Army performance,
the better you can see the actors' expressions and performances.
Since I was traveling to Xi'an with my mom,
I deliberated between getting 'special section' tickets or VIP tickets.
(I wasn't sure where the 'special section' was, so I just)
went with the VIP section tickets!

Ultimately, we managed to snag seats on the
second floor, in the

second row, practically right at the front!
It was absolutely fantastic because there was nothing at all obstructing our view.

How to Get to the Venue, Entering the Venue, and Show Review
1. How to Get to the Venue

You can simply enter this address into the Didi taxi app:
天台路与沣东大道十字东北角
and you'll be all set!

Many reviews suggested arriving early,
and even though the show starts at 4:50 PM,
it's definitely best to arrive between 4:15 PM and 4:30 PM.
I heard I had to exchange for a physical ticket and then enter,
so I aimed to arrive at the venue by 4:00 PM.
It felt like a neighborhood where there wouldn't be anything,
but suddenly, like magic,
a massive theater building appeared!

2. Entering the Venue / Show Review
Once you arrive and enter the theater building,
they'll check your passport upfront before you proceed inside.

At the ticket collection counter, show your passport and reservation details,
and you'll receive your physical ticket.

Your physical ticket will clearly show
the section and specific seat for the Gu Gu Da Jin show.

Right in front of the Gu Gu Da Jin show ticket booth,
you can enter from 4:15 PM, heading down the stairs to the lower level.

Entry into the main hall from the lower level will be available shortly after.
Show your ticket to the staff, and they'll guide you to your designated seating zone.

Even if you can't read the Chinese written on your Gu Gu Da Jin show ticket,
don't worry! From the moment you enter, there are staff members at every seating row, and if you show them your ticket, they'll smoothly direct you to your seat,
so there's no need to worry.
⚡️
Once the show starts, the floor moves,
so movement is impossible!

Once seated, fasten your seatbelt.
You can only take photos of the stage with your camera before the show begins.
To prevent any sound during the performance, it's recommended to turn off alarms, switch to airplane mode, or power off your phone entirely.
Also, absolutely no phone lights during the show!
If anyone uses their phone or
tries to take pictures once the show starts, hidden staff members will 'shoot' a laser pointer at the person using their phone.
(Even the gentleman in front of us, when the show had already begun,
kept taking out his phone to try and snap photos,
and immediately, a laser pointer beam shot down from somewhere,
so he quietly enjoyed the rest of the show after that, haha!)

✔️ You can't leave for the restroom during the show,
so make sure to go beforehand!
✔️ Restrooms are available on the ticket booth level and immediately before entering the main performance hall on the lower level (just like at a movie theater).
✔️ While the movement isn't excessively violent,
definitely buckle up your seatbelt and avoid placing anything on the floor that could fall or roll away.

When the Gu Gu Da Jin show begins,
the story unfolds in what appears to be the excavation site of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army in Xi'an.

Initially, objects from inside the Terracotta Army site, which were on the floor,
start to float up towards the sky.
A little later, hills rise from the stage floor,
and a procession of young men, building Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb and Terracotta Army,
emerge one after another.

(And wow, they all have such great physiques... Also, there are so many actors on stage at this point,
I think there are easily more than 30-40 people, it's hard to know where to look!!! 😊😊😊
That's how it all started!)))

Then, Emperor Qin Shi Huang's palace appears from the stage, upside down,
hanging from the sky,
and swoops down dramatically towards the audience's seats!
After that, the hills on the stage disappear,
and columns suddenly rise from the stage.

At this point, Qin Shi Huang also appears,
creating a scene reminiscent of an ancient East Asian painting,
with picturesque, beautiful actors dressed in traditional Qin Dynasty attire.
They truly look like paintings themselves, making it inherently mysterious.
Then, the ground where the actors stand on stage
begins to rise,
and pillars emerge from the ground, which was incredibly mysterious
and magnificent.
To recreate cinematic special effects
like this, in real life...?
I was absolutely amazed.

And then, in the middle, something like a roof
emerges from the stage,
and real water pours down from the stage ceiling, simulating rain.
Actors connected to wires then appear above the audience,
and they literally fly
between the roofs.
Seeing the flying effects from Chinese Wuxia dramas
right before my eyes... wow!
My mom and I watched it in complete awe.
Then, there's a scene where actors move by boat,
and the entire audience seating also sways,
making it feel like you're actually on a boat.
It was a performance that truly impressed me once again.
Originally, my Xi'an trip plan included watching 'The Great Qin' (Gugu Daejin) performance, then seeing the Terracotta Warriors the next day, and also catching the 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance.
On the last day, I even planned to see the Tang Dynasty show.
But after seeing the ultimate Xi'an performance,
I figured I didn't need to see any other shows.
(And it's not because the itinerary was too tiring!)))

While it's pricey, it's definitely worth the money, and it's a performance I believe everyone should see at least once in their lifetime when visiting Xi'an, along with the Terracotta Warriors.
And because the performance is on the more expensive side,
the theater is well-managed,
so it was nice not to have any noisy or rude people around.
Also, the audience seating is arranged in a zigzag pattern,
which means you can see well even if there's a tall person in front of you – that was a great feature.
Personally, I think it's great to see it either before visiting the Terracotta Warriors of Qin Shi Huang
or after.
Since the two locations aren't that close to each other,
watching it the day before seeing the Terracotta Warriors of Qin Shi Huang seems like a good idea.
