This autumn, I'm planning a special trip to Xi'an, China with my mom,
so I've been doing my homework, researching Xi'an from A to Z.

Among China's many incredible cities, Xi'an stands out for its rich historical relics,
and truly magnificent architecture that offers a maximum sense of grandeur.
It feels like the "Egypt of the East," a city where you can witness breathtaking sights.
Plus, it's only a 3-hour flight from Seoul, making it an excellent choice for traveling with parents.
That's why I decided to explore the wonders of Xi'an, China!
While Shanghai showcases China's modern splendor,
Xi'an offers a deep dive into history.
From the Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang to the ancient City Wall, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and countless other Tang Dynasty relics, Xi'an lets you explore centuries of history all in one place.

The absolute best time to visit Xi'an is during the autumn months of September and October.
Especially in October, with temperatures hovering around 12-22°C (54-72°F), it's refreshingly cool, not hot like summer, making it ideal.
It seemed like a perfect destination for both solo adventurers and those traveling to China with their parents.
For this Xi'an trip, a 3-night, 4-day itinerary is planned.
Since I'm traveling with my mom,
instead of rushing to tick off as many spots as possible,
we'll focus on major historical sites like the Terracotta Army,
ensure comfortable transportation,
and dedicate our evenings to enjoying unique Xi'an performances or exquisite dining experiences. I've curated this schedule with those priorities in mind!
Ready to dive into the grand plan for our 3-night, 4-day Xi'an adventure?
Xi'an 3-Night, 4-Day Itinerary at a Glance
Here's a rough outline of the recommended + planned
China Xi'an travel itinerary.
DAY 1
Arrive in Xi'an → Hotel Check-in → Bell & Drum Towers → Muslim Quarter → Xi'an Night Views
DAY 2
Terracotta Army → Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang or Huaqing Palace → Evening Xi'an Stage Performance
DAY 3
Shaanxi History Museum → Big Wild Goose Pagoda → Grand Tang Everbright City → Immersive Royal Banquet Show
DAY 4
Xi'an City Wall → Lunch in the City Center → Transfer to Airport
Instead of cramming in as many Xi'an attractions as possible for a 3-night, 4-day trip, I've focused on 1-2 major activities per day, centered around the Terracotta Army.
Since I'm traveling with my mom, I've factored in travel time and energy levels, and I plan to further adjust the schedule during the actual trip if needed.

Traveling to Xi'an, China in October:
Is it suitable for a trip with parents?
Xi'an is one of China's most iconic historical cities.
Beyond the famous Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang, there's a wealth of attractions for history buffs, including the Xi'an City Wall, Bell and Drum Towers, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Shaanxi History Museum, all offering a deep dive into ancient Chinese history.
What truly impressed me about Xi'an, China, isn't just its daytime sightseeing, but also the diverse range of evening performances and immersive experiences available.
You can spend your days exploring sites like the Terracotta Army or museums, and then transition into Tang Dynasty-themed shows or dining experiences in the evenings. This makes it incredibly easy to craft a captivating itinerary for a trip with parents.
However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind for a Xi'an trip.
Some attractions, like the Terracotta Army, are located outside the city center,
and many sites require a fair bit of walking. So, if you're traveling with parents, public transport is definitely out of the question.
While I personally managed just fine taking Didi taxis when traveling alone,
it would be wise to utilize reliable taxis or private car services.
※ Important: During China's National Day holiday period in early October,
domestic tourism is incredibly high. It's crucial to avoid traveling during National Day to ensure a smoother China trip.

DAY 2. The Heart of Your Xi'an Trip: Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army
The place I'm most excited about on this trip is, of course, Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army.
In fact, you could say it's the biggest reason for even coming to Xi'an.

If it's your first time visiting Xi'an, Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum and the Terracotta Army are iconic historical sites that are almost always on the itinerary, famous for the large-scale excavation of life-sized soldier and horse figures.

However, something to consider when traveling to Xi'an (especially if you're with family) is,
that the Terracotta Army is not located in the city center of Xi'an.

Where it says 'Xi'an City' is the Xi'an city center, the downtown area,
and the area marked with the orange arrow is the location of Xi'an's
Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army.
Since it takes over an hour by car,
if you plan to go from the Xi'an city center to the Terracotta Army Museum and back,
you should allow at least two hours for the round trip.
Since it's not a place you can just pop out of your hotel to see quickly and return, like a city tour, it's a good idea to think about your transportation method in advance.
If you're traveling with parents like me, or if your group is around 2-4 people, reserving a private car in Xi'an to visit the Terracotta Army and nearby attractions together seemed like a good option.

By using a private car,
you can also get a Xi'an city tour and a guide,
and it seemed like a great way to reduce the hassle of traveling back and forth between the Terracotta Army and your hotel.
You can choose an English-speaking guide for 8 to 13 hours,
and upon request, a Mercedes-Benz vehicle seating 9 to up to 19 people
can be arranged for your Xi'an sightseeing.
This seems especially convenient for the return journey after a lot of walking at the Xi'an Terracotta Army, so I'm considering it for this Xi'an trip.

While it might be nice to visit Huaqing Palace along with the Terracotta Army,
if stamina is a concern (especially if you're traveling with your mom or family),
it might be wise not to be too ambitious and instead spend ample time at the Terracotta Army before heading back early
to your Xi'an hotel.
** Especially! If you're traveling to Xi'an with your parents, I recommend an itinerary that allows plenty of time at the Terracotta Army rather than trying to see all the famous sights.
In the evening, a Xi'an stage show
After seeing the Terracotta Army and resting for a bit at your hotel,
it's a great idea to catch a performance in the evening that's based on Xi'an's history.

This theater is the world's first mobile immersive theater, where you can fully immerse yourself in the grandeur from sky to earth in 360 degrees, reliving ancient history and traveling back in time within its vast 32,000 square meter dedicated space.
With the world's longest and fastest track-based super-large mobile grandstand, you'll witness the Terracotta Army rise from beneath your feet, and palaces glow resplendently indoors.
Especially when traveling with parents, including a seated performance is a wonderful alternative to constantly roaming late-night pubs or night markets.
After experiencing the Terracotta Army and other historical sites firsthand during the day, watching a related historical performance in the evening will likely make the content even more captivating.
DAY 3. From Shaanxi History Museum to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda
And right in the heart of Xi'an,
for just ~$5, you can experience 10 Intangible Cultural Heritage activities & Terracotta Army pottery + traditional paper crafting + intangible cultural heritage bamboo crafting + ancient incense sachet making, and more.
📍 69 Shun Cheng Nan Lu Zhong Duan
69 Shun Cheng Nan Lu Zhong Duan, Bei Lin District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China 710008
For your third day, dive back into a historical journey within Xi'an city.
At the Shaanxi History Museum,
you can explore relics unearthed from Xi'an and the surrounding Shaanxi Province,
making it a frequently recommended spot for history enthusiasts, especially when combined with a visit to the Terracotta Army.
After your museum visit, it's highly recommended to spend your evening near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, taking in the magnificent Grand Tang Mall (Datang Everbright City).
The Grand Tang Mall is a pedestrian street alive with dazzling lights and ongoing performances, creating a completely different atmosphere from the daytime visits to the Terracotta Army or museums.
That's why we highly recommend dedicating at least one evening of your Xi'an trip to soaking in the vibrant ambiance of this area.
A Xi'an Imperial Banquet I'd Love to Experience with Mom
And for this Xi'an trip, what I'm looking forward to most, right after the Terracotta Army,
is this immersive imperial dining and banquet show!!!
It's similar to the Chinese course meal + performance experiences that have recently popped up on YouTube in Shanghai, but Xi'an offers it at a much more affordable price with even higher quality performances!
You'll enjoy your meal while watching performers in traditional Chinese attire, making it less about simply eating and more about immersing yourself in a captivating show.

Most importantly, when traveling with Mom, an evening itinerary that involves a seated dinner and performance feels much more comfortable and less tiring than continuously walking around until late.

If you're looking to share a truly special evening with your parents in Xi'an, this itinerary is definitely worth comparing.

DAY 4. See the Xi'an City Wall & Depart for Home
When traveling with parents, it's usually better to leave ample time for airport transfers rather than packing your schedule full until the very last minute.
Things to Book in Advance for Your Xi'an Trip with Parents
While preparing for this trip, I realized that Xi'an has surprisingly many activities worth booking in advance.
Especially for popular spots like the Terracotta Army or performances, it's much more convenient to compare itineraries and prices before you depart.
① Xi'an Hotels
② Terracotta Army Admission & Tour
③ Xi'an Private Car
④ Xi'an Stage Play
⑤ Immersive Imperial Dining Banquet Show
When you're traveling with your beloved mom, it's truly worth considering comfort over just chasing the lowest prices. Think about investing a little extra in experiences that minimize travel time and let you both relax, soak it all in, and truly enjoy every moment.

Is a 3-Night, 4-Day Trip to Xi'an Enough When Traveling with Your Parents?
If it's your first time exploring Xi'an's major attractions, a 3-night, 4-day itinerary allows you to visit both the Terracotta Army and key city landmarks.
Attractions further from the city center, like the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace, can be grouped into one day, while the remaining days can be filled with wonders like the Xi'an City Wall, Bell Tower, Shaanxi History Museum, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
However, when traveling with your parents, it's highly recommended not to cram too many attractions into a single day.
Especially on days that require significant travel and viewing time, such as visiting the Terracotta Army, it's a fantastic idea to use a private car or tour to ease the burden of movement. In the evenings, plan relaxing activities you can enjoy while sitting, like a captivating show or a delightful meal.
