1. Why I Chose a Korean Guide Tour for the Xi'an Terracotta Army

When my mom and I planned our trip to Xi'an, there was one incredible sight that topped our must-see list:
Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army in Xi'an!
📍 Terracotta Army
Lintong District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi, China. Postal Code: 710612
Think about it: even in our own art museums or historical sites, if you explore without a guide,
just buying a ticket and wandering around can often lead to a less immersive experience.
But on the flip side, whenever I've joined a guided tour,
(even if my feet were a little tired!) I've always walked away feeling completely fulfilled, brimming with both inspiration and fascinating insights...
Now, imagine the Terracotta Army – a place where explanations can be tricky to decipher, and the crowds are absolutely immense!
It just felt essential to hear the captivating backstory to truly appreciate it.
The adult admission fee for the Terracotta Army is 120 yuan, approximately ~$15, and official guiding services are available, but

I worried if audio guides would even be available, or if the explanations would be too dry and academic.
Plus, I was afraid of falling for an unofficial guide once I got there,
ending up on one of those sad Terracotta Army tours full of 'yes shopping, yes optional add-ons'.
So, I decided to simply
book an official Xi'an Terracotta Army tour well in advance from home!
!
To be honest, a Korean-speaking Terracotta Army guide
was significantly pricier than an English or Chinese guide,
and I briefly considered going with an English guide instead.
But for my mom, I decided it was worth the extra cost to ensure a comfortable and engaging experience with a Korean guide.

What's more, the Xi'an Terracotta Army attracts an incredible number of local Chinese visitors.
During peak holidays like National Day, over 60,000 people can visit in a single day!

I also heard that having a Terracotta Army guide helps 'clear a path' for you to get to the front and see everything well (?!).
This tidbit definitely played a role in my decision!
(As a Korean, I just didn't trust myself to navigate those immense local crowds...)
And honestly, thanks to that (?), on our Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Army tour,
we really did get to see everything right from the front and catch every word of the excellent explanations!
2. Korean Guide Terracotta Army Tour: What's Included & Price Comparison

① What's Included in Your Tour —
Check if it's solely the Terracotta Army,
or if it includes Huaqing Palace or the 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance.
Terracotta Army + Huaqing Palace is a popular pairing, but the performance is often an add-on.
② Tour Duration —
Make sure to distinguish if the time listed for the tour package is the actual viewing time for the Terracotta Army,
or if it's the total duration, including hotel pickup, travel, and any performances.
③ Tour Style —
Check the minimum number of people required for the tour to depart and the actual maximum group size.
Compare whether it's a join-in tour with other travelers or a private tour exclusively for your group.

Xi'an Terracotta Warriors Tour Selection Checklist

When you're ready to book your Xi'an Terracotta Warriors tour, here's a checklist of things to consider.
There's no single 'right' answer, so choose what best suits your preferences!
1) What courses are included in the itinerary?

Is it just the Terracotta Warriors, or does it include Huaqing Pool?
Or does it extend to include the 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance?
[Typically, the Terracotta Warriors + Huaqing Pool combo is a common, basic itinerary.]
2) What's the duration of the Terracotta Warriors tour?
Tours can range from a minimum of 2 hours to over 6 hours.
Just listening to the commentary at the Terracotta Warriors usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
So, if you're looking at a 6-hour tour,
make sure to check if that includes pickup/drop-off times or performance times, in addition to the Terracotta Warriors commentary.
Sometimes, meal times are also included in the tour duration. Personally, I'm not a fan of this; it feels like wasted tour time when you can't choose your own menu and are limited.
3) How many people will be receiving the Terracotta Warriors tour guide together?
Private? Group tour?
There are options for private tours catering to just 1-3 people to explore the Terracotta Warriors.
vs
Then there are 'random' Terracotta Warriors tours that proceed with 4-10 participants depending on bookings.
(If it's not specified, it could be a small group or a large group, unfortunately! 😢)
vs
And there are also 'not-so-small' Terracotta Warriors tours designed for 6 or more people right from the start.
4) What language will the Terracotta Warriors guide speak?
A Chinese-speaking guide is usually very affordable, and an English-speaking guide comes at a reasonable price.
However, a Korean-speaking guide can be quite expensive 💸, even for a group!
As a side note, I highly recommend choosing a guide who speaks a language you're almost native in for the best experience.
5) Are pickup/drop-off, admission tickets, performance tickets, and meal costs included?
Most Terracotta Warriors guided tours typically include the admission ticket.
If the 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance is an option, you can choose to add it for an extra fee.
6) So, considering the tour group size, itinerary, language, and inclusions, is the price reasonable?
Generally, a Korean-speaking guide, while varying by date, seems to start from around ~$111 to ~$149 per person.

+)
P.S. When deciding on your Terracotta Warriors tour, here are some extra thoughts and tips from me:
* The 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance can be booked separately, and you can get central seats for around ~$52.
(You could potentially skip the performance option on your tour, book tickets separately – maybe a little discreetly... and arrange your own transport? 😉)
Might it actually be cheaper to just buy these tickets on your own?
* And personally, regarding free pickup/drop-off conditions:
Often, it's provided for hotels within Xi'an's 3rd Ring Road.
While it can be convenient, it often depends on specific conditions or your accommodation's location, and sometimes pickup/drop-off points are already fixed.
Anyway, taxi fares in China are quite affordable, so you can pretty much get anywhere for around ~$15. So, is it really that much of a perk? 🤔
Personally, I sometimes find tour pickups in Xi'an to be more of a hassle than a help.
* And meal inclusions? Also a 'no' from me personally. 🙅♀️
Food in China is incredibly cheap... I'd rather just eat what I want, when I want it!
* And a longer tour doesn't necessarily mean it's better. It can get exhausting...
So, initially, my mom and I wanted a private, Korean-guided tour with a shorter itinerary.
Among the Terracotta Warriors tours I researched above,
I narrowed it down to these two options:
(2) Xi'an, China: Terracotta Warriors + Huaqing Pool + Song of Everlasting Sorrow (Optional) _ Korean Guide _ Afternoon/Evening _ Private _ Vehicle Provided _ ~$283 per person for 1, ~$171 for 3 people.
The advantage here is that it's just your family or group (2-3 people).
(5) Xi'an, China_ Terracotta Army Guided Commentary Service (2.5 hours/5 hours) Korean available 8-30 Klook
