1. What is the Xi'an City Wall?

📍 Xi'an City Wall
XinCheng District, Xi'an, China Postal Code: 710003
The Xi'an City Wall is a truly massive structure that forms a perfect rectangle around Xi'an's historic old downtown!
With a perimeter of approximately 8.5 miles and a height of about 39 feet, when you actually visit, it feels less like a traditional wall and more like a wide, elevated road built atop a fortress.

Inside the wall, you'll find the charming, ancient streets of Xi'an, while on the opposite side, a modern cityscape unfolds. This stark contrast, allowing you to witness China's past and present simultaneously, was truly impressive!
2. Xi'an City Wall Entrance Fees & Discount Booking
To experience the Xi'an City Wall, you'll need to purchase an entrance ticket to access the top.

3. Xi'an City Wall, Which Gate Should You Enter?

The Xi'an City Wall has several entry points, so you can choose the one that best fits your itinerary.
For first-time visitors, I personally recommend starting at the South Gate (Yongning Gate, 永宁门)!

It's conveniently located near Yongning Gate Station on Xi'an Metro Line 2, making it easily accessible by public transport. Plus, the South Gate is incredibly grand and impressive in scale.
4. My Experience on the Xi'an City Wall

After walking along the wall myself, even though the surface is flat, you'll be doing a fair bit of walking, so I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes!
Also, there aren't many shaded spots, so if you're visiting during the warmer months, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water are absolute essentials!

What surprised me most when I got onto the wall was just how incredibly wide it is!
With walls on either side and a broad pathway stretching ahead, it was fascinating to imagine people from ancient times walking these very steps. It really added to the experience!

Personally, I would strongly recommend purchasing an admission ticket and walking along the wall rather than just taking photos from below!
The true grandeur and scale of the Xi'an City Wall are best appreciated when you're actually up there.

Walking the entire circumference of the wall is quite a feat, and it can be a lot, especially if you're with family who might tire easily.
If you just want to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the views, climbing up at the South Gate and walking slowly for about 30 minutes to an hour is perfectly sufficient!

I visited in August, and let me tell you, it was incredibly hot – I felt like I was going to melt!
However, once the sun sets, the wall and its surroundings light up, creating a completely different, magical ambiance. The night views are stunning, so I highly recommend an evening visit if you can!
