This Weekend: Autumn Foliage at Odesan (오대산) Woljeongsa (월정사) – Should You Go?
I visited Odesan Woljeongsa with my child on a weekday this week.
It was recommended by ChatGPT as a
"great autumn foliage destination to visit with a baby
in a stroller,"
and to cut to the chase, the autumn foliage was about 50% developed.
"How much of the autumn foliage has developed if I go now?"
For those checking the current status before heading out,
and for my own records, even though it wasn't a full blaze of colors,
I've put together the delightful atmosphere I experienced.

Visit Period | Late October (Oct 19) weekday afternoon |
Location | Odesan Woljeongsa and its surroundings (I only explored easy paths since I was with my child.) |
Foliage Progression | Approx. 50% (based on my personal observation, not official figures.) |
Atmosphere | A mix of green, yellow, and orange, with red foliage here and there. |
One-Line Review | Peak foliage not yet, but enough for an autumn stroll. Next weekend, late October to early November, would be better to enjoy the autumn foliage than this weekend! |
⚠️The upper parts of Seonjae-gil (선재길) and Birobong (비로봉) are already great for enjoying autumn foliage!
Autumn Foliage Status in Photos

The entire mountain was slowly turning yellow and orange.
However, with green pine and fir trees mixed in,
it still felt a bit early to call it a mountain of full autumn foliage.
The water was clear, creating beautiful reflections,
and the sky was blue, making it a perfect day for a stroll.

I visited on a weekday, and parking lot 1 was already full, lol.
However, there were parking spaces directly opposite,
and with parking attendants guiding us,
parking wasn't difficult at all.
There were small trees with red leaves along one side of the road,
which made me anticipate the autumn colors even more.
Autumn Foliage: Different from Expected Peak

According to the autumn foliage forecasts I checked before departing,
the peak of Odesan's autumn colors was expected around October 16th.
So, I thought 'Is this it?' and went,
but when I visited in late October, past the predicted peak,
it was still only about 40% developed.
⚠️Even within Odesan, higher elevations (like Sangwonsa (상원사) and Birobong) see the leaves change color earlier,
while areas like Woljeongsa and the lower parts of Seonjae-gil tend to change a bit later.
So, Is Now a Good Time to Visit? Recommendations by Scenario!

✔️ If your goal is fully bloomed, vibrantly red autumn foliage
→ I recommend late October to early November.
✔️ If your goal is a light stroll through a temple and forest path with your child
→ Now is still OK.
✔️ If your goal is trekking Seonjae-gil.
→ We didn't walk the entire section since we were with a baby,
but I think the photos above should be helpful.
The areas that received plenty of sunlight were tinged red,
while the opposite side was still quite green.

With yellow and red maple trees everywhere,
it seems like a great place for a stroll and snapping some memorable photos.
Our Route with Baby: Woljeongsa Temple (월정사) + Teatime at the Entrance

Since we were with a baby in a stroller,
we decided on a relaxed route, just exploring Woljeongsa Temple and its immediate surroundings.
Long walks like the Seonjae-gil Trail (선재길) or the Fir Forest Trek (전나무숲)
will probably be possible once the baby outgrows the stroller. 'ㅅ 'a

Autumn Leaves at Woljeongsa Temple with a 3-Year-Old
Rather than the autumn leaves, our little one was more interested in the lanterns hanging everywhere,
so we ended up buying a wish lantern.
We didn't hang the wish lantern up,
but carried it around and eventually brought it home with us.

There are two cafes inside Woljeongsa Temple.
The one on the left felt like a cafe that had just recently opened.
The one on the right, located at the entrance to Woljeongsa Temple, had more of a traditional teahouse feel.
Our choice was the teahouse! Ha!

We could enjoy the autumn leaves even from the outdoor seating of the teahouse,
and with a gentle breeze blowing, it was truly wonderful.
