When you travel to Jeju, you want to eat black pork,
but indulging in expensive black pork BBQ every single time
can feel a bit heavy on the wallet, right?
This time, for a refreshing change,
I headed to The Aewol Main Branch,
a spot famous among locals in Aewol
for its Jeju Black Pork Duroochigi (spicy stir-fry)! :)

1. A Must-Try Spot in Aewol, Jeju Island

I visited around 10:30 AM
for an early lunch (brunch, really).
With a generous portion of Duroochigi, warm Kimchi Stew,
and even a hot pot of rice, it was absolutely perfect
for a hearty meal before kicking off my Jeju adventure.
It's also fantastic in the evening to pair the Duroochigi
with a glass of soju, making it a truly authentic Aewol gem
I'd recommend from brunch all the way to dinner!

From its exterior, The Aewol Main Branch already exuded that distinct Jeju vibe.
As you walk past the stone wall, you'll discover a cozy space,
and it truly felt like a charming neighborhood eatery locals frequent,
rather than a large, impersonal tourist restaurant.

There's also a spacious private parking lot,
so it was super convenient to stop by even if you're exploring Jeju
with a rental car.

It was selected as an excellent establishment in the 2023 KCA Korea Consumer Industry Awards,
and when I went inside, I saw so many celebrity autographs!
With famous personalities like Tak Jae-hoon and Cool Lee Jae-hoon
having visited, I was secretly looking forward to the food even before it arrived, haha.
2. The Aewol Main Branch: Interior Vibe & Menu

The interior is quite charming and cozy,
so it's not super huge, meaning there might be a wait during lunchtime.
I went around 10:30 AM, and it was nice and relaxed,
but after 11 AM, a few groups started coming in!
I recommend visiting for breakfast/brunch in Aewol
or slightly avoiding the peak lunch hours. Remember, it's closed on Sundays!

The self-service bar had everything from lettuce and other wrap vegetables
to chili peppers, garlic, ssamjang (Korean dipping sauce), and various side dishes,
so you could get as much as you needed.

The restrooms were also in separate, designated areas for men and women,
which made them pleasant and clean to use.

The signature dishes are made with 100% Jeju Black Pork,
namely Black Pork Kimchi Jjigae and Black Pork Duryuchigi.
*Duryuchigi can be ordered for 2 people or more
Here's something important to know!
Duryuchigi does not include rice,
but Kimchi Jjigae comes with sticky pot rice.
If you want to enjoy Duryuchigi with pot rice,
you can add it for ~$1 :)

What I loved most was that, compared to grilled black pork,
you can enjoy Jeju black pork for around ~$7,
and get such a generous portion,
which really won me over! Haha!
(It's actually quite rare to find places that use 100% black pork!)
3. Black Pork Duryuchigi & Kimchi Jjigae: An Honest Review

Yangdon Duryuchigi (Gochujang) ~$9
Padon Duryuchigi (Soy Sauce) ~$9
Black Pork Kimchi Jjigae + Sticky Pot Rice ~$7

First up, Yangdon Duryuchigi!
This dish features black pork thoroughly seasoned with gochujang paste,
served with a generous mound of fresh onions on top.

The seasoning is spicy,
but has a subtle sweetness that emerges at the end.
The black pork isn't just thinly sliced;
it has a satisfying thickness and chewy texture when you bite into it,
and with the crisp, sweet flavor of the onions,
I simply couldn't stop eating!

It's delicious on its own,
but you absolutely *must* try this with rice!
Layering the meat and onions on warm pot rice,
each bite was a true 'rice thief' – so good it makes you want more rice!
The flavors are so bold that if I had eaten this for dinner,
I definitely would've craved a glass of soju! Haha!

Next up, Padon Duryuchigi!
As it's soy sauce-based, it has less of that intense spiciness
compared to the Yangdon Duryuchigi,
offering a delightful sweet and savory combination instead.

Generous amounts of shredded green onions are piled on top of the black pork,
and the unique pungency of the green onions
balances out the sweetness of the soy sauce seasoning,
making it surprisingly not cloying at all.

Especially when you wrap a little rice, a piece of meat,
shredded green onions, and some ssamjang paste in lettuce,
this combination was truly incredible.
It's so hard to choose just one between the two...
but personally, I'd give the win to Padon with a 6:4 ratio over Yangdon!
Maybe it's because I generally prefer green onions over regular onions, hehe.

Also, be sure to try the Black Pork Kimchi Jjigae.
It's not one of those kimchi jjigae dishes where you get an obvious hit of artificial flavoring,
It wasn't an overly spicy kimchi stew,
but rather a refreshing broth flavor from perfectly fermented kimchi,
enhanced by the sweet notes of onion.

With plenty of generously sized tofu
and even Jeju Black Pork included,
considering the price of just ~$7,
it's an absolute steal!

And the highlight? The chalsotbap (sticky rice in a hot stone pot) served with the kimchi jjigae!
We mixed the freshly cooked, warm rice with the duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork) sauce,
and then, for the perfect finish, poured water into the pot to enjoy the
scorched rice (nurungji) at the end. It was the perfect way to conclude the meal.

If Jeju Black Pork BBQ feels a bit much,
or if you're craving a hearty meal that locals enjoy in Jeju,
I highly recommend
The Aewol Main Branch, a true Aewol culinary gem in Jeju!

It's perfect for a hearty brunch or lunch,
and in the evening, it's a fantastic spot for some pork or green onion duruchigi
with a glass of soju.
I definitely want to revisit it on my next trip to Jeju!
They also offer a 10% discount on dessert drinks like coffee, lattes, and ade,
so you can enjoy your entire meal, from main course to dessert,
all in one convenient place! :)
