I recently visited Temioyae, a hidden gem in Daejeon.
It's a place where old former governor's residences have been beautifully renovated
and reborn as a vibrant cultural and artistic space.
With gardens and balconies bathed in warm sunlight,
tatami rooms that feel like stepping into a traditional Japanese home,
and a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere...
It's the perfect spot for capturing picturesque moments that evoke strong feelings.
Here, the coziness of old hanok (traditional Korean houses)
and the calmness found in traditional homes wonderfully coexist.
With tatami rooms scattered throughout, you can even feel like you've traveled to Japan.
Each residence has its own unique character, making it so much fun to explore them one by one!
Let me introduce you to Temioyae, a fantastic spot for a date or a must-visit destination in Daejeon.

Temioyae is conveniently located not far from the main street of Eunhaeng-dong.
It's a short 10-minute drive from Daejeon Station,
and only 1.2 km from Sungsimdang Bakery Headquarters,
making it about a 20-minute walk.
There's an exclusive free parking lot available,
so you can visit without any worries about parking.
Temioyae is a cultural space that has been remodeled from the former residences of the Daejeon Mayor and
Chungnam Provincial Governor, which were used from 1932 to 2012.
It was officially opened to the public as a cultural, artistic, and healing space on April 6, 2019.
'Temi' is the old name for this area,
and 'Orae' is a beautiful Korean word meaning 'old' and 'a village with several houses facing each other in an alleyway.'
Furthermore, Residences No. 1, 2, 5, and 6 have been designated as National Registered Heritage sites,
and the Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence is listed as Daejeon Metropolitan City Cultural Heritage Material No. 49.
The idea of a space where past and present coexist made me even more excited to visit!
Temioyae is divided into seven distinct areas:
the Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence,
Residence No. 1 (Garden of Senses),
Residence No. 2 (Temi Playground),
Residence No. 5 (Temi Memory),
Residence No. 6 (Temi Gallery),
Residence No. 7 (Temi Salon),
and Residence No. 9 (Temi Creative Studio).
Since each residence has its own unique building,
you can simply wander through the alleyways and explore them one by one at your own pace.

The Heart of Temioyae
The Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence
is a central and significant space within Temioyae,
where the provincial governor actually resided in the past.
Furniture and daily items used at that time are on display,
allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of daily life during that era.
A permanent exhibition is held here, themed "."
The exhibition focuses on the record of President Syngman Rhee's five-day stay in this residence village
and related events when he was on the run during the Korean War.
It's a meaningful space where you can gain a deeper understanding of the Korean War and the historical context of that period through the exhibition.
Overall, it creates an atmosphere where time seems to stand still,
and by preserving its traditional architectural style,
it truly felt like a special place.
In particular, this spot is perfect
for capturing photos with an emotional and timeless ambiance.

At Temi-Orae, you'll find that all the residences are designed for a truly immersive experience, inviting you to kick off your shoes and feel right at home.
Don't worry, cozy slippers are thoughtfully provided at the entrance of each residence, ensuring you can explore every corner in complete comfort!
Step back in time to where former provincial governors actually lived and worked.
These residences are beautifully preserved, from their private living quarters to the official reception rooms, offering a genuine glimpse into history.
It was fascinating to delve into the key records and accomplishments of the successive Chungnam provincial governors,
and truly insightful to observe the administrative shifts and policy currents that defined their eras.
Oh, to call this place home! Seriously, I couldn't help but wish it was mine! haha
The warm sunlight filtering through the beautifully divided windows,
combined with the stunning view of the pine-filled garden just outside...
The indoor scenery here is so exquisitely beautiful that just sitting in silence fills your heart with a profound sense of peace and tranquility.
What makes this place truly special is how beautifully it preserves the timeless charm of traditional homes!
The delightful aesthetic created by the wooden window frames and sliding doors,
paired with the characteristic low ceilings of old houses, creates such a quiet and cozy ambiance.
And with a sprawling garden just beyond the windows, you'll feel as if time itself has paused.
The presence of tatami flooring even added a touch of Japanese sensibility to the atmosphere.
This spot is practically begging for you to snap some incredibly picturesque and emotionally resonant 'life shots' for your memories! 😉
As the gentle sunlight caressed my skin,
that longing thought of 'Oh, if only this were my home!' came flooding back again. It's just that enchanting! 😊
You can even try your hand at drawing architectural blueprints using a compass,
giving you a deeper appreciation for the structure of these historic buildings.
And there's a special paper section on the wall where you're invited to freely leave your mark,
whether it's a quick note or a creative drawing!
The Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence offers even more to explore – you can venture beyond the first floor and visit the second floor too!
Even the staircase leading upstairs was incredibly charming and full of character.
Just look at those beautiful windows nestled along the way – they're absolutely stunning, aren't they?
It was definitely a spot too lovely to simply walk past without capturing a few photos!
The moment I stepped onto the second floor,
I honestly felt like I'd been transported straight to Japan! 😂
The low ceilings, the tatami flooring, the sliding doors –
everything exudes that distinctly calm and refined aesthetic so characteristic of traditional Japanese homes, don't you think?
And the way it all blends with the garden visible from the window? Absolutely gorgeous.
Beyond the interiors, the Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence also boasts an absolutely stunning garden.
You'll find a captivating array of ancient pine trees and other venerable trees gracefully scattered throughout,
creating a serene ambiance perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Imagining how the former governors lived amidst such an incredible garden...
well, I must admit, I felt a little pang of envy at that moment! 😄
Not just in this garden, but throughout the official residences,
you can find ancient trees that have stood the test of time.
When you leave the Chungnam Provincial Governor's Official Residence,
you'll find the residences
situated on both sides of an alley.
You can explore them house by house,
feeling as if you're just popping over to a friend's place. It's a really cozy experience!
Residence No. 1
Garden of the Senses
The Garden of the Senses is
a space dedicated to exhibitions themed around the four senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell) and
their integration.
Sight: A sensory space created by light and color
Wow, it truly takes your breath away, doesn't it?
The Room of Sight, as expected,
was a place where vibrant, beautiful colors truly stood out and captivated your eyes.
The sunlight streaming through the windows
shone all the way to the floor,
creating beautiful patterns and colors
that formed a scene like a single work of art.
This was truly a place where anyone could capture a masterpiece photo!
This spot even has a dedicated photo zone set up,
perfect for capturing those beautiful memories.
In the Room of Touch,
it's an interactive space where you can experience things firsthand.
You can directly feel various materials and textures with your fingertips,
and there's even a cozy spot where you can lean back and rest,
allowing you to comfortably unwind and fully immerse yourself in your senses.
As soon as you enter the Room of Smell,
wow, it immediately transports you into a forest!
The space is filled with the scent of nature,
creating a calming and truly healing sensation for your mind.
The Room of Hearing is
a place where every single sound, from birdsong and the whisper of the wind to the rustling of branches and grass,
completely fills the space,
bringing a sense of calm and total healing to your mind.
In My Senses,
it's a space where you can leave your mark by doodling or drawing
on the paper panels located on the wall.
In the Integration of Senses room,
an outdoor activity sheet for finding 'Temi-Orae Trees' is ready for you.
I thought they would hand out the activity sheets after the experience itself,
but I was pleasantly surprised that the activity sheets were readily available,
so anyone could freely participate!
Sitting down with the kids,
we could also beautifully color in pictures of the Temi-Orae trees.
Official Residence No. 2
Temi Playground
Official Residence No. 2's Temi Playground is an experiential space
where you can enjoy a variety of activities.
It's especially well-equipped with things kids will love,
making it a popular spot for families.
You can play various board games and block games,
and even roll the dice to predict your fortune for the year.
Do you know Sabangchigi (Korean hopscotch)? Haha.
We used to play it so much when we were kids..
On one side, you can even take receipt-style photos for free.
The wall covered with photos was quite impressive.
Be sure to leave a precious memory behind! :)
The virtual reality/metaverse experience zone was under repair.
Fun fact: there's even an arcade machine in one of the rooms! Haha.
It's a place that both kids and adults absolutely love! :)
It's not just about viewing exhibitions;
there are elements hidden everywhere that everyone, young and old, can enjoy!
What's more,
there's also a room where you can enjoy various traditional games like Ttakji folding, Gonggi-nori (Korean jacks), puzzles, Chilgyo-nori (Korean tangram), Yutnori (a traditional board game), and more.
We also spent quite a while here, playing games with the kids! :)
Official Residence No. 5
Temi Memory
Official Residence No. 5 is a space designed to archive the memories of Temi-Orae as official residence housing.
It was a space that collected the traces of daily life and belongings of former high-ranking public officials from Chungnam Province.
Postcards are available at the entrance,
and you can put them in the Slow Postbox.
However, the Slow Postbox was not operating on the day of our visit.
Filled with old items everywhere,
it was a fascinating space to get a glimpse into life back then.
Especially the kids, seeing a rotary phone for the first time,
were absolutely fascinated by it! Lol.
When we showed them how to use it,
they all eagerly took turns spinning the dial,
trying out all the numbers from 0 to 9! Lol.
It was a completely new experience for kids who are used to only seeing smartphones these days.
When I was little, there used to be nooks or spaces like this,
where I played a lot of hide-and-seek.
The kids came in and immediately hid here, too. LOL
It seems what kids love never changes, even with time. Haha.
Residence 6
Temi Gallery
Unfortunately, there wasn't an exhibition at the Temi Gallery on the day of my visit.
Residence 7
Temi Salon
Residences 7 and 9 were two buildings connected in one space.
If you've collected stamps by touring each residence,
you can receive a souvenir at Residence 7.
Residence 7's Temi Salon is
a free space that anyone can use freely –
you can think of it as a cozy free cafe!
In such a beautiful space,
you can enjoy free tea
and relax comfortably...
How amazing is that?!
There's also a photo zone,
and each room has various tables and chairs,
which you can use freely.
There was also an outdoor rooftop space on the 2nd floor,
but unfortunately, as closing time was near,
I wasn't able to go up and see it.
Unfortunately,
the free beverage service provided at Temi Salon
will only be available until February 28th, I hear.
However, the space itself remains,
so if you visit Temi Ore, make sure to spend some time at Temi Salon
and enjoy a relaxing time.
In one corner of the yard, you'll also find the Kkumssi Family! Hehe.
Residence 9
Temi Creative Studio
Temi Creative Studio is a place where you can participate in creative activities related to Temiore,
and anyone can join without any special application.
On the day of my visit, I got to try out **scratch art** and **string art**, among other things.
If you're visiting with kids, this would definitely be a must-do, right? 😉
Temiore is adorned with an emotional and artistic atmosphere everywhere you look,
making it the absolute best spot for taking photos.
Especially places like the Garden of Senses, Temi Memory, the South Chungcheong Provincial Governor's Official Residence, and Temi Salon were perfect for capturing those 'once-in-a-lifetime' shots.
With warm lighting and vintage buildings blending together beautifully,
simply standing there yielded atmospheric photos. Haha!

Temi-Orae operates from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM. It is regularly closed every Monday. Admission is free.
Temi-Orae is located about a 10-minute drive from Daejeon Station. It is 1.2 km away from Sungsimdang Main Branch, taking approximately 20 minutes on foot.
Wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted at Temi-Orae, and pets are also not allowed. Additionally, outside food and beverages are prohibited.
You can participate in a stamp tour by visiting each residence and collecting all the designated stamps. Completing the stamp tour will earn you a souvenir.
Temi Salon in Residence No. 7 is a free space accessible to everyone. However, the complimentary beverage service will only be available until February 28th.
