My main reason for making a quick stop in Delhi this time was the Taj Mahal. It is the ultimate symbol of India, so I felt like I had to experience it at least once in my lifetime.
There are several ways to get there.
Broadly speaking, you can either head straight to Agra from the start and go from there, or book a tour starting directly from Delhi.
Since I was already carving out the travel time, I chose a tour that would let me explore neighboring Jaipur as well.
And the verdict...?
Taj Mahal, India Delhi to Agra Agra to Jaipur Various Taj Mahal Tour Options |
1. Taj Mahal, India
A majestic mausoleum built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal—a breathtaking monument widely celebrated as the ultimate symbol of love.
Alongside the Ganges River, it stands as one of India's most iconic landmarks.
Instead of heading straight to Agra on my own, I opted for a tour starting from Delhi. Since I booked a private solo tour, I was able to customize the itinerary exactly to my liking.

What I really wanted was two things: getting back to Delhi a bit early on the final day, and doing a sunrise 'open-run' (getting there right as the gates open) at the Taj Mahal.
The tour coordinator was incredibly helpful and adjusted the schedule to make it happen.
Originally, the route was Delhi to Agra first, followed by Jaipur. But to pull off the early-morning open-run, we flipped the order.
We hit Jaipur first, then drove to Agra to spend the night, waking up bright and early the next morning to beat the crowds at opening time.
2. Delhi to Jaipur

Our morning meeting time was 5:00 AM.
The driver was already there waiting for me.
I climbed right in and immediately fell asleep.
I had barely slept the night before because of my flight to Delhi, so I caught up on some deep sleep during the drive.
It was a long journey, but we arrived safe and sound.
Since I slept the whole way in the backseat, it didn't even feel that long to be honest!

Our first destination was Jaigarh Fort, which is located right next to Amer Palace (Amber Fort), so you can usually choose between the two.
They are actually close enough to walk between. If I were traveling completely solo, I probably would have visited both, but with a guide with me, it felt a bit tricky to push for both.

Behold, Amer Palace!
My guide, the driver, and honestly most people seem to recommend Amer Palace.
I totally agreed. However, the reason I also wanted to visit Jaigarh Fort wasn't necessarily for the fort itself, but because I wanted to get a stunning bird's-eye view of Amer Palace from a distance.
I wanted to experience the contrast between taking in the grand scale from afar versus seeing it up close.
Due to time constraints, I settled for admiring Jaigarh Fort from a distance.

Next up was the City Palace.
(Honestly, there were a few minor stops in between—like Jal Mahal and Jantar Mantar, which has a collection of ancient astronomical instruments—but to keep things brief, I'll focus on the main highlights here!)
It was incredibly grand, and the rooftop cafe we stopped at midway was lovely.
After wrapping things up here, the key was to head to Agra early and stay the night there.
All to prepare for the early morning open-run the next day!
3. Jaipur to Agra

Off to Agra, to see with my own eyes what I had only ever seen in photos.
We had already completed the drive the night before, so after a good night's rest at a nearby hotel, we set off early in the morning.

We set off before the sun was even up, and by the time we arrived,
look at this queue already...
The time was exactly 5:43 AM.
Around this time of year, gates open at about 6:00 AM
(It’s not strictly fixed—they seem to open right at sunrise.)

A line of this size actually moves really quickly once they open.
Plus, our guide helped us get through the entrance in no time.
(There isn't a special VIP lane or anything, but they helped speed up the security check, made sure nobody cut in front of us, and navigated us through the lines smoothly.)

After breezing through security...
We walked just a little bit further.

And finally, there it was. Absolute awe.
The sun hadn't quite risen yet, and there was barely anyone around.

We snapped tons of photos before the crowds started pouring in.
As we walked closer, the sun finally started to peek out.
We took our time exploring the inside...
(Though honestly, we were already exhausted from taking so many photos!)

Then we headed back to our original spot to take a few more shots.
With the daylight fully out, the photos looked even better.
But by this time, the crowds had arrived,
and the guides taking photos for other tourists kept telling us to move...
Plus, there were so many people with professional gear setting up shots,
making it a lot harder and more chaotic to get a clean photo.
One major highlight! Since we stayed nearby, we were able to leave all our heavy bags at the hotel. Because we did the 'open-run' at sunrise, we had plenty of time to explore and it was still early. We went back to the hotel, enjoyed a relaxed, hearty breakfast, packed our bags, and checked out. We then continued with the rest of our itinerary, which was super convenient and kept our energy levels high! |

Next up, Agra Fort!
The inside was beautiful, of course,
but for me, the grand entrance alone was absolutely breathtaking.
(Though we'd already used up all our energy at the Taj Mahal,
so exhaustion was definitely starting to kick in...)

This place is often called the "Baby Taj" (Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah).
Since we'd already seen the grand original, though,
it didn't hit quite as hard.
On the bright side, there were barely any crowds.
One cultural difference that caught me off guard Normally, on other tours—especially those led by Korean guides—the itinerary is pretty flexible. While you still hit all the scheduled stops, the guide will tweak the order on the fly to make it more efficient. In India, however... that’s not really the case. No matter what happens, they stick strictly to the pre-planned route. For example, during our trip, a road was temporarily blocked due to a local event. Instead of taking a detour to another spot first, we just waited it out to follow the exact sequence. |
4. Various Taj Mahal Tour Options

As you might expect,
given how incredibly popular it is, there are tons of different tour options.
For me, I wanted an action-packed itinerary to see as much as possible,
so I went with an overnight tour. But you can easily find one that fits your exact wishlist.
Just pick the one that covers the spots you want to visit!
Here are a few popular options to give you an idea:
First, the one I took.
This one takes 2 days since it goes all the way to Jaipur.
There are also day tours that get you back on the same day without an overnight stay,
often including a buffet lunch at a 5-star hotel.

📍 Agra Fort

📍 The City Palace
Gangori Bazar, J.D.A. Market, Kanwar Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302002, India
Originally, the route was from Delhi to Agra and then Jaipur, but the itinerary was changed to enter the Taj Mahal as soon as it opened. We visited Jaipur first, then traveled to Agra for an overnight stay, and headed to the Taj Mahal early the next morning.
It opens around sunrise at 6:00 AM, and a waiting line had already formed by 5:43 AM. Even with a large crowd, the guide assisted with the security check and navigation, allowing us to pass through quickly.
Following the recommendation of the guide and driver, we visited Amber Palace. I wanted to visit Jaigarh Fort to get a panoramic view of Amber Palace, but due to time constraints, I ended up just observing it from a distance.
Local tours in India strictly follow the set itinerary rather than flexibly changing the route according to the situation. Even when roads were closed due to an event, we didn't take a detour but waited and proceeded along the designated route.
