My flight landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport after 10:00 PM, and my tour was scheduled to depart at the crack of dawn the very next morning.

Initially, I considered staying at a transit hotel right on the airport boundary. However, I didn't need anything fancy just to close my eyes for a few hours. More importantly, those ultra-close airport hotels don't allow external tour operators to enter for pickups. Staying there would mean walking quite a distance to meet my tour guide in the early morning. So, I opted for a spot just outside the boundary that allowed direct tour pickups.

1. Airport Pickup Drama

Things started off a bit rocky.

I had pre-booked an airport pickup directly with the hotel. We had messaged back and forth to confirm everything, but when I landed, there was no driver in sight.

I had to call them, and only then did they finally dispatch a vehicle to get me.

To make matters worse, I assumed this was a complimentary service. It wasn't. They demanded a hefty fee of ~$18 (1,500 INR) for a round-trip. Had I known that, I would have just booked an Uber!

(Though, to be fair, New Delhi airport is incredibly chaotic, and trying to hail an Uber or find a taxi late at night can be an absolute nightmare, so a pre-arranged ride does save some sanity).

Since I only needed a one-way pickup, I negotiated. They wanted ~$12 (1,000 INR) for the pickup and ~$6 (500 INR) for the drop-off. I pointed out that they forgot my booking and made me wait forever. They offered a tiny discount to ~$11 (900 INR). I pushed back further and finally settled on ~$10 (800 INR).

2. Checking In

After a slightly frustrating start to the night, I finally made it to the lobby and completed the check-in process.

The front desk handed me two complimentary mini water bottles, which was a nice gesture, especially since I found two more waiting in the room.

As for the room...

Well, it was honestly below my expectations.

After surviving some very basic budget stays in Varanasi, I thought I could handle anything. But the combination of exhaustion and the pickup drama made the room feel pretty disappointing. I had booked a Deluxe Double Room.

The room came with the extra bottled water, basic bathroom amenities, a shower, and fresh towels. It was functional, but definitely lacked the polish you'd expect from a standard hotel.

Despite the mediocre room quality and service hiccups, I actually slept incredibly well. I was so exhausted that I passed out immediately and got some solid rest.
