New Delhi served as the final leg of my Tripvillage India tour package. During my first solo trip to India, I only managed to explore areas like Paharganj's backpacker district, Connaught Place, and Hauz Khas. The city's notorious traffic and the sheer distance between major attractions made venturing out alone quite daunting.

Over two days in New Delhi, we explored iconic sites. Day one took us to India Gate, Qutub Minar, and the Lotus Temple. When you picture New Delhi, the majestic India Gate is likely one of the first images that comes to mind. It's an iconic symbol of India and an absolute must-see for any visitor.

Standing approximately 138 feet tall, India Gate was constructed between 1921 and 1931. This poignant war memorial honors the more than 90,000 Indian soldiers who bravely lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.

If you look closely at the arched structure's walls, you'll see the names of fallen soldiers etched into the stone. Had I been exploring alone, I might have simply admired its grandeur. But with our guide Vikas, his insightful explanations truly brought the history to life, making the experience far more profound.

Lotus Temple

Often referred to as the 'Lotus Temple,' this architectural marvel is one of India's most distinctive buildings. Completed in 1986, its unique design is truly captivating.

In 2001, CNN even reported it as one of the most visited buildings in the world. Doesn't it bear a striking resemblance to the Sydney Opera House?

Remember to remove your shoes before entering. With the intense sun, a parasol is a must-have for comfort. Inside the temple, security is strict, and photography or videography is not permitted.

The interior is surprisingly simple, resembling a church with rows of long benches. Visitors typically spend 10 to 20 minutes in quiet contemplation or prayer before exiting, allowing a continuous flow of people.

For lunch, we visited Barbeque Nation, a popular buffet restaurant located inside the modern 'Nexus Select CityWalk' shopping mall.

The common misconception that India lacks hygiene and guarantees an upset stomach is simply untrue. Affluent neighborhoods and shopping malls, like this one, are remarkably clean and can easily rival facilities in Western countries.

From succulent grilled lamb skewers and aromatic garlic naan to various intriguing local Indian dishes, everything we tried was delicious. The sausage-like meat in the bottom right corner was goat, which has a stronger gamey flavor and spice aroma that might not appeal to everyone. Personally, I found it quite enjoyable.

We also tried Pani Puri, a popular Indian street snack. Its crispy, hollow shell is filled with a tangy, slightly sour (rather than spicy) flavored water. It's said to be a particular favorite among Indian women.

Qutub Minar

Our next stop was Qutub Minar, an imposing minaret standing at an impressive 238 feet! As India's tallest minaret, it's an essential visit for anyone traveling to New Delhi.

If you're traveling independently, trying to visit both the Lotus Temple and Qutub Minar in a single day is nearly impossible. They're located almost two hours' drive from the main New Delhi city center. This highlights a significant advantage of opting for a guided tour package.

Next to the completed minaret, you can also see an unfinished tower. There were no other Western tourists in sight, but plenty of Indian visitors were busy taking photos. The sheer scale of the tower and the playful squirrels darting about made for a memorable scene.
