Sushi Kitdo Daejeon Review: Sesame Oil Halibut Sushi

Looking for the perfect weekend lunch spot with a friend?

We decided on a delicious sushi date!

Since one of my friends visits this place religiously,

I was super curious to try it myself.

Here is my honest, self-funded review of Sushi Kitdo in Daejeon! 🙌

Sushi Kitdo is located in Daeheung-dong,

right where the old Sushi Kuruma used to be!

I remember eating there about two years ago...

I wonder when it changed? 👀

We arrived just slightly after the 11:00 AM opening time,

and there was already one table seated and dining.

Because the space is quite intimate,

you might experience a bit of a wait during peak lunch hours!

As soon as you sit down, they serve a refreshing house tea.

It was absolutely delicious!

I meant to ask what kind of tea it was, but I completely forgot. 😭

I ordered the 10-piece Set A,

which comes with a mini udon and a sweet marinated cherry tomato.

Once you order, the chef prepares the sushi right in front of you.

Since the set menu is pre-set,

the food comes out incredibly fast!

As they serve the plate, they give you a quick, helpful guide:​

✔️ There is no wasabi inside the sushi, so add as much as you like!

✔️ We recommend eating from left (lighter white fish) to right.​

I started with the classic halibut sushi—soft, chewy, and fresh.

The very first bite got me so excited for the rest!

The next piece looked just like the first halibut, but with a twist.

There's a secret layer of aromatic sesame oil underneath the fish.

This was my first time seeing this:

Putting classic halibut and sesame oil halibut side-by-side in one set

is an absolute stroke of genius.

It completely maximizes the rich, savory flavor of the sesame oil. 😌😌

It was mind-blowingly good! 🤯 Honestly, I wanted a whole plate of just this.

The rich, fatty salmon was incredibly smooth,

but the seared salmon was definitely my favorite of the two!

The cooked shrimp started with a lovely garlic-butter note

and finished with a rich, savory cheddar cheese flavor. Delicious!

Personally, I have a raw shrimp allergy,

so I usually have to give those pieces away when ordering sets.

I loved that Set A didn't include any raw shrimp! 😎

The last line of sushi featured classic, familiar flavors. :)

They were decent, but for the maki,

I highly recommend tasting a bit of the sauce first

to see if it fits your preference.

Unfortunately, the sauce didn't quite hit the spot for either me or my friend.

Since it was our final bite, it left us wishing for a slightly different finish! 🥹

The mini udon was a great companion throughout the meal,

though the broth was on the slightly saltier side!

From the outside, Sushi Kitdo looks like a cozy corner in Japan. 🌸

Step inside, and you'll find it filled with adorable Ghibli merchandise!

I've always believed that cute trinkets look best

when curated together in a beautiful space

rather than bought individually to sit at home.

The seating consists of a single long counter bar in the middle,

making it quite cozy and intimate.

It's highly recommended for solo diners or dates rather than large groups!
