Welcome to Jju's Travel Diary! ☺️

Today, I'm back with Part 2 of Jju's Sungsimdang Tour! I'm so excited to share my review of Sungsimdang's famous cakes with you today 🎂
Since it was my first time buying a cake at Sungsimdang, I was super confused about the difference between the Siru Cake Specialty Shop vs. the Cake Boutique and didn't know which one to visit!

At first, I thought heading to the Cake Boutique would be enough. But as it turns out, each shop has its own unique concept! Choosing the right location based on your sweet tooth goals will definitely make your visit so much more satisfying.
I ended up checking out both spots just to get my hands on the famous "Fruit Baby Siru Cake" (Gwa-il Maknae Siru).
For all you first-timers out there, I've gathered some super helpful tips to know before you go, and I'm sharing all the juicy details in today's travel review!

Sungsimdang Cake Boutique
VS Siru Cake Specialty Shop

Before we dive into the Fruit Baby Siru Cake review!
Let me break down the differences and unique features of the Sungsimdang Siru Cake Specialty Shop and the Cake Boutique, which totally had me scratching my head at first.
1️⃣ Sungsimdang Cake Boutique

📍 Sungsimdang Cake Boutique
480 Daejong-ro, Jung-gu, Daejeon
✔️ In addition to cakes and roll cakes,
they sell gift-worthy baked goods and sweet treats!

At Sungsimdang Cake Boutique, you'll find not only whole cakes but also roll cakes, madeleines, cookies, puddings, and adorable baked goods that are absolutely perfect for gifting.
If you're looking for delicious, gift-worthy baked goods to bring home alongside or instead of a whole cake, I highly recommend visiting the Cake Boutique!

The roll cakes come in so many fun flavors like mango, melon, tiramisu, pure cream (Sunsu), tangerine, and more! Plus, they are sold as individual slices, making them perfect for a quick taste test or as sweet little souvenirs.
2️⃣ Sungsimdang Siru Cake Specialty Shop

📍 Sungsimdang Siru Cake Specialty Shop
1st Floor, 484 Daejong-ro, Jung-gu, Daejeon
✔️ If you only want to buy a whole cake
The Sungsimdang Siru Cake Specialty Shop is dedicated entirely to whole cakes, meaning the line moves pretty quickly! However, keep in mind that the purchasing line and the pickup line are separate, so you do have to line up twice—which can be a little bit of a hassle.
3️⃣ In Summary
Where should you go? | Recommendation |
🎂 Planning to buy only a whole cake | Siru Cake Specialty Shop |
🥐 Planning to buy baked goods & roll cakes | Cake Boutique |
🎁If you also want to browse desserts for gifts
Cake Boutique
🎂Picking up ordered cakes
Only available at the Siru Cake Specialty Store
You can buy cakes at both locations, but
pickups are only available at the Siru Cake Specialty Store.
I also needed to buy some bread as gifts, so I visited the Cake Boutique. But if you only need cake, just visiting the Siru Cake Specialty Store should be more than enough!
Can you buy a cake without an "open run" (waiting in line before opening)?

Fruit Mangnae Siru Cake ~$29
The answer is yes!
However, the seasonal Siru cakes often sell out if you visit in the afternoon.
The super popular melon, peach, and blueberry flavors were already sold out when I visited around noon on a weekday.

But the standard Fruit Siru and regular cakes were still available even when visiting in the evening.
If you want to grab the seasonal Siru cakes like peach, melon, or blueberry, I highly recommend visiting early in the morning!
Pro Tips for Storing Sungsimdang Cakes
🧊Locker Fridge Review🧊

After buying a heap of bread at the main Sungsimdang branch and then adding the Mangnae Fruit Siru cake from Cake Boutique, it was almost too heavy to carry around!
When that happens, try using the cake fridge lockers located in the underground shopping mall, just a 1-minute walk away.

Prices range from ~$6 down to ~$3, but I used the one that costs ~$4 per day.
You can open and close it as many times as you want until 11:59 PM on the same day, so you can easily store more bread if you do some extra shopping!
Fruit Mangnae Siru Unboxing🍌🍈🍊

The Fruit Mangnae Siru cake finally arrived home, 10 hours after purchase!
After adding an insulated bag + ice pack🧊 (additional fee of ~$3) and storing it in the cake fridge locker, it survived the 10-hour journey and made it home perfectly safe!

The presentation is just mind-blowing👍 With fresh fruit piled generously on top of a chocolate cake sheet, I was immediately in love with how it looked!
The fruits change by season, but this time, bananas and mandarin oranges were packed inside the layers, with melon, Shine Muscat grapes, mandarins, apples, and kiwi loaded generously on top!

And the taste? Absolutely divine!
You might think the combination of chocolate sponge and whipped cream could be too heavy, but the cream wasn't overly sweet, making it a perfect match with the fresh fruit. It was definitely big enough to feed 5 people comfortably!

🍯Here's a quick pro-tip🍯
Don't peel off the plastic collar wrapped around the cake! Instead, just dig in with a fork from the top, and you can enjoy it cleanly without the whole thing collapsing.
That's all for my Sungsimdang cake review!
In the next post, I'll be back to introduce Sungsimdang's Kitchen Terrace, where you can enjoy both meals and dessert in one place!🖐🖐

Should I go to the Sungsimdang Cake Boutique or the Siru Cake specialty shop?
If you want to buy other desserts like baked goods or roll cakes along with your cake, it's best to visit the Cake Boutique. On the other hand, if you just want to buy a cake quickly or pick up a pre-ordered cake, you can use the Siru Cake specialty shop.
Do I need to wait in line before opening to buy the ~$29 Fruit Maknae Siru?
You don't necessarily have to line up before opening, as the Fruit Maknae Siru and regular cakes are usually available even if you visit in the evening. Where is a good place to store a heavy Sungsimdang cake if I want to look around the area after buying it?
It is convenient to use the cake refrigerators located in the underground shopping mall, just a 1-minute walk from the Sungsimdang Main Store. The daily fee ranges from ~$3 to ~$6, and you can open and close the locker an unlimited number of times until 11:59 PM on the same day.
