Since my husband's family is based in Busan and we live right near Suseo Station in Seoul,
the SRT has become our go-to train for traveling south.
If you are riding the SRT for the first time,
or if you panicked because your desired train was completely sold out,
I've put together this practical guide to help you navigate the system smoothly.
From the official seat map, power outlet locations, and Wi-Fi tips,
to the family-friendly cars and insider hacks for securing last-minute cancellation or standing tickets,
here is everything you need to know for a stress-free trip in 2026. Make sure to read to the end! :)
SRT Seat Map & Car Layout
A standard SRT train consists of Cars 1 through 8.
However, during peak travel times, two trains are often coupled together.
When this happens, Cars 11 through 18 are added to the back.
If your ticket is for these double-digit cars, double-check your car number before boarding!
Cars 8 and 11 are physically blocked and not connected internally.
If you board the wrong section, you might end up standing in the vestibule until the next station!
Here is a quick breakdown of the amenities in each car:
Car 1: Accessible Restroom + Diaper Changing Station
Car 2: Men's Restroom
Car 3: Women's Restroom
Car 4: AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
Car 5: Nursing Room + Diaper Changing Station (Baby-Friendly Car)
Car 6: Women's Restroom + AED
Cars 7 & 8: Men's Restroom
Knowing these layouts in advance makes booking a seat
much easier when tickets open a month in advance.
Car 5: The Family-Friendly Zone
Car 5 features the nursing room and diaper changing tables,
so it is designated as the 'Baby & Toddler Friendly Car.'
If you book tickets with infants or young kids, the system prioritizes this car.
But keep in mind, this isn't a 100% guarantee.
If Car 5 is already full or if you book late, you might be assigned to a different car.
If you end up in Car 5, it is highly appreciated if passengers show a little extra patience
with crying babies or excited kids.
In reality, though, some passengers still complain
even if kids are just whispering.
(If you are sensitive to noise, I highly recommend booking early
and securing a seat in any car other than Car 5!)
Power Outlets & Wi-Fi
For power, there are two standard 220V outlets per pair of seats:
one under the front of your seat, and one under the back.
This means every single passenger can charge their devices easily.
You can use standard Type C or Type F plugs directly,
though they can sometimes feel a little loose, so make sure your charger is pushed all the way in.
For Wi-Fi, select the 'SRT-WiFi-Secure' network and
enter 'wifi' for both the username and password. Alternatively, you can connect to 'free srt wifi.'
The speed is surprisingly decent for basic tasks,
though it can cut out briefly when passing through long tunnels
or when the train is traveling at maximum speeds.
I usually put on YouTube videos for my child during the ride,
and I've never found the connection frustratingly slow.
What to Do If Tickets Are Sold Out
Your first line of defense is the Standby Booking System (예약 대기).
The app accepts standby requests for up to 10% of the train's total capacity.
If someone cancels, seats are automatically assigned to those on the standby list in order.
However, standby registration closes 2 days before departure,
so as soon as your travel dates are set,
be sure to jump on the standby list immediately.
Standby seats typically open up around 4:00 AM,
about 2 to 3 days before the train departs.
If your trip is coming up fast or standby is closed,
your best bet is the cancellation refresh method.
Last-minute cancellations trickle in right up until departure day.
Even during popular commuter hours,
tickets are frequently canceled as plans change.
So don't lose hope—keep refreshing the app periodically,
and you'll often snag a seat!
Other options include route extensions or combined tickets (병합 승차권).
Route extension means booking a ticket to an intermediate station,
boarding the train, and then asking the crew to extend your ticket to your final destination.
(I don't highly recommend this, and I haven't had to do it myself,)
but it's a lifesaver to keep in mind if you absolutely must get home
and have no other options.
Just make sure to find a conductor and request the extension immediately
to avoid being flagged for fare evasion.
How to Buy SRT Standing Tickets
Standing tickets (입석) are only released once all regular seats are completely sold out.
You can buy them in person at the station ticket counter or self-service kiosks.
However, they are limited to just 15 tickets per train, so you have to act fast.
The upside? They are 15% cheaper than standard seated tickets.
If you don't want to rush to the station early,
you can purchase mobile standing tickets via the app.
These uniquely open up exactly 2 hours before the train's departure.
For example, if your train departs at 9:41 AM,
mobile standing ticket booking opens at 7:41 AM.
During busy rush hours, even these mobile standing tickets
can sell out the second they open.
Set an alarm and log on exactly on time!
Since standing tickets don't come with a seat,
you'll need to use the folding jump seats or stand in the corridors between cars.
Be sure to stand up at stations so you don't block
other passengers boarding or exiting the train.
Booking Windows & Cancellation Fees
SRT tickets open for booking exactly one month before the departure date at 7:00 AM.
Popular routes sell out incredibly fast,
so setting an alarm for 7:00 AM is highly recommended!
Refund policies vary between weekdays and weekends.
The cancellation fee increases the closer you get to departure,
and once the train reaches its destination,
no refund can be issued.
Luggage Storage Tips
There are two main spots for luggage: the dedicated luggage racks near the entrance doors,
and the overhead racks directly above your seat.
The floor luggage racks can hold about four 24-inch suitcases.
During major holidays, these spots fill up instantly on a first-come, first-served basis,
so board early if you have heavy bags.
If the floor racks are full,
you will have to lift your bags onto the overhead racks.
In my experience, a standard 24-inch suitcase
will fit on the overhead rack, but it is a very tight squeeze.
If your bag is larger or heavier than that,
I strongly advise against trying to lift it overhead.
Anything bigger simply won't fit safely up there.

Car 8 and Car 11 are not connected to each other, so you must check the car number on your ticket before boarding. If you board the wrong part of the train, you may have to stand until the next station.
