Considering adding the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) to your itinerary?
When I thought of major American art museums, my mind always went straight to MoMA in New York. I had no idea the West Coast boasted such an impressive modern art institution!
As a big art lover, I made sure to visit SFMOMA during my San Francisco trip, and I was genuinely surprised by how substantial it was, from its sheer size to its extensive collection.
In this guide, I've compiled everything you need to know: essential details like SFMOMA's location, admission fees, and operating hours, along with a look at the famous artworks I saw firsthand. I'll also give you my honest take on whether it's a must-visit, especially if you're not typically into modern art.

It's always a good idea to check their official website before your visit for the latest updates on free days. However, other discounts, such as those for military personnel/veterans and the San Francisco CityPASS, are still available.
How to Book Tickets & Compare Prices
The most convenient way to visit is by purchasing your tickets online in advance and exchanging the barcode for an entry ticket. I did this myself, and it made for a smooth entry! After some quick currency calculations, I found that booking through platforms like Klook or MyRealTrip can sometimes offer a better deal. While the standard adult admission is $30, you might find it for about ~$1 less on Klook!
Even though the face value is the same, ticket prices can vary slightly between booking platforms. As of this post's publication date, you can often find SFMOMA tickets cheaper on Klook. I recommend checking for coupons or discount codes before finalizing your purchase.

Must-See Famous Artworks
SFMOMA is organized into five curatorial departments (Architecture & Design, Media Arts, Painting & Sculpture, Photography, and Contemporary Art), showcasing an incredibly diverse range of genres—much like New York's MoMA. You'll find a map at the building's entrance that helps you locate specific artworks, and printed guides are also available, making it easy to navigate the museum.
Essential Famous Artworks to See
#1 Mark Rothko
A master of Color Field painting, I highly recommend stepping back a bit to appreciate his works. The colors truly transform when viewed from a slight distance compared to up close.

#2 Joan Miró
Surrealist painter's captivating works

#3 Salvador Dalí
A leading figure of Surrealism

#4 Jackson Pollock
Abstract Expressionist action painting

Beyond these iconic pieces, I found the photography exhibition section surprisingly rich and engaging. There were also plenty of sculptural artworks and media art installations to enjoy. Each floor at SFMOMA has a distinct concept, so I recommend starting from the top and working your way down to experience it all.

My Honest Review
To be completely frank, modern art can still be challenging and sometimes hard to grasp. Nevertheless, I was drawn in by the museum's reputation as one of the largest in the U.S., and the space itself—with contemporary artworks filling every wall and ceiling—was truly impressive. The architectural details were definitely part of the museum's charm.
SFMOMA certainly has a different vibe than New York's MoMA. It felt truly saturated with modern art, and I noticed a greater number of less-known works. This made me think that without some prior research, one might just glide through without fully appreciating everything. I wished for more accessible explanations or audio guides available in multiple languages to enhance the experience, as I didn't find extensive options during my visit.

Despite the challenges of modern art, it was a wonderful experience immersing myself in the visual feast. However, to be completely honest, if you're not particularly passionate about art and your San Francisco itinerary is already packed, it's perfectly fine to consider skipping SFMOMA.
Keep SFMOMA in mind as an option for your San Francisco trip,
especially if you're a museum enthusiast!

As of 2026, the adult admission fee is $30. Visitors aged 18 and under can enter for free, so families only need to purchase tickets for the parents.
The museum is closed on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, it is open from noon to 8:00 PM. On all other days (Monday, Tuesday, and Friday through Sunday), it is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
You can enjoy Mark Rothko's color field paintings, surrealist works by Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí, and Jackson Pollock's action paintings. The exhibitions span a total of seven floors, so we recommend starting from the top floor and gradually making your way down.
Currently, a Korean docent system is not available. Additionally, the previously offered free admission on the first Thursday of the month has been temporarily suspended, so we recommend checking other discount options, such as the San Francisco CityPASS.
