Hog Island Menu
As an oyster bar, a wide selection of fresh oysters is, of course, the star of the show. One of the joys of enjoying oysters abroad is the incredible variety available, each with its own unique flavor profile – it's truly fascinating!
I've pulled a snapshot of their oyster menu from their website. Let's take a look at the oyster offerings:

They typically feature around six different types of oysters. Now, about the price – it was $24 for six oysters! While that might seem steep compared to some places, it’s the standard for fresh, premium oysters in a prime location like this.
We opted for a mixed selection to sample a bit of everything.
Beyond oysters, Hog Island offers a diverse menu. You can check out their full offerings via the link below:

We definitely had to wait in line for a while. There's no separate reservation system, so arriving right when they open (an "open run") is highly recommended if you want to snag a table without a significant wait.

After a considerable wait, we were finally seated at the bar. This spot offers a fantastic view of the staff diligently shucking oysters, a real treat to watch! We felt lucky to get these seats.
To start, we were served some complimentary bread.

Our beer and the highly anticipated clam chowder arrived. San Francisco is famous for its clam chowder, and a warm bowl is always a perfect match for the city's famously unpredictable weather. While we enjoyed our beers, I did wonder if a crisp white wine might have been an even better pairing with the oysters!

Then, the main event: our platter of fresh oysters! We ordered a dozen, which included two of each of the six available varieties. My husband and I happily shared them. It's rare to order oysters by the piece in some cultures, but it was absolutely worth it here – they were incredibly delicious.
Each oyster had a unique flavor, often leaning towards a sweeter profile, and generally had a less intense "oceanic" taste compared to oysters I've had elsewhere. Truly a delightful experience!

After savoring every last oyster, we rounded off our meal with a delicious coffee from the nearby Blue Bottle Coffee, a perfect ending to our culinary adventure.
Hog Island San Francisco Review: Is It Worth the Wait?
While Hog Island is also renowned for its clam chowder, it's primarily an oyster bar. If you're not particularly fond of oysters, you might find the value for money a bit low – let's be honest, a dozen oysters won't exactly fill you up!
However, if you're an oyster enthusiast, the opportunity to taste such a diverse and fresh selection makes it an incredibly satisfying experience. I was thoroughly impressed, and if I find myself in San Francisco again, Hog Island Oyster Co. will definitely be on my return itinerary.
