San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf: BART to F-Line Tram Guide 2026
Planning a trip to San Francisco's iconic Fisherman's Wharf? Skip the stress! Discover the easiest way to get there by transferring from BART to the historic F-line tram.

Hey there, fellow travelers!
On my recent trip, I took the BART from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) into downtown,
getting off at Embarcadero Station.

Even after getting off the train, I had a bit of a wrestle with directions, got confused by the numerous station exits, and mixed up the cable cars with the F-line tram. It cost me some precious time and a few dollars!
In this guide, I'll share my firsthand experience and simplify the easiest way to get to Fisherman's Wharf, so you don't make the same mistakes!
Which BART Station Should You Get Off At?

If you're coming from the airport, your destination is
Embarcadero Station.
Fisherman's Wharf isn't directly accessible by BART, so you'll need to transfer to the F-line tram here.
Which Exit is the Easiest?

Initially, I exited at A1 and wasted a lot of time searching for the F-line stop.
If it's your first time, head for the B2 (Main St) exit!
The tram stop is in the middle of the street. You'll want to catch the tram from the stop facing Citibank.

F-Line Tram vs. Cable Car: Know the Difference!

This was the most confusing part for me.
I mistakenly thought they were the same mode of transport and bought a cable car ticket first. What a blunder!

They are completely different transportation options.
F-Line Tram | Cable Car |
Travel to Fisherman's Wharf | Sightseeing Experience |
Standard Muni Fare | Dedicated Cable Car Fare |
Vintage Streetcar | Hill-climbing Cable Car |
Just knowing this distinction will save you time and money like it would have for me!
Which Direction for the F-Line?

This is the tram you're looking for!
They come in various colors, including yellow and green.
Once you're at the stop, always confirm the destination. To reach Fisherman's Wharf, you need to take the tram heading in the
F Market & Wharves
direction.
Conversely,
❌ Castro
is the opposite direction, away from the waterfront.
Before boarding, double-check the destination displayed on the tram's sign!
Can You Use Apple Pay to Board?

When I used the tram, I simply used
Apple Pay.
Just tap your phone or watch when you board, similar to how you'd use a transit card.
You don't need to purchase separate tickets like the one I mistakenly bought earlier.
Also, unlike BART, there are no turnstiles, so you don't need to tap again when you exit.
Where Should You Get Off for Fisherman's Wharf?

If you're planning to visit Boudin Bakery or Pier 39,
you should get off at the F-line stop closest to your destination.
I was heading to Boudin Bakery at Fisherman's Wharf, so I got off at Pier 39.
There isn't a display screen on the tram, so you'll need to listen carefully for the driver to announce the stops.
Most people heading to the main attractions get off at Pier 39, so if you're unsure, just follow the crowd!
My Experience

At first, I relied solely on AI for my trip planning without much prior research, which made transferring quite a challenge. But once I actually did it, it turned out to be pretty straightforward!
Just remember these key points:
✔ Get off at Embarcadero Station
✔ Use the B2 exit
✔ Board the F Market & Wharves direction tram
With these three tips, navigating to Fisherman's Wharf is much easier than it seems.

In fact, riding San Francisco's vintage streetcar and enjoying the views out the window became one of the highlights of my trip!
Stay tuned for my next posts, where I'll share my review of Boudin Bakery and my self-guided San Francisco bike tour experience!
Frequently Asked Questions
After taking BART from San Francisco Airport and getting off at Embarcadero Station, which exit is the easiest to take to transfer to the F-Line streetcar?
If you are visiting Embarcadero Station for the first time, the easiest way is to exit through B2 (Main St). Once you exit, you can catch the F-Line streetcar at the stop facing Citibank.
I'm planning to use the F-Line streetcar to get to San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, but what's the difference between it and a cable car?
The F-Line streetcar and cable car are completely different modes of transportation. The F-Line streetcar is a vintage streetcar used for travel to Fisherman's Wharf and can be ridden with a regular Muni fare. In contrast, cable cars are a tourist experience for climbing hills and require a special fare.
How do I pay the fare when riding the San Francisco F-Line streetcar, and how do I confirm the direction towards Fisherman's Wharf?
You can pay the F-Line streetcar fare by tapping your Apple Pay, similar to T-Money, when boarding; there's no need to tap again when getting off. To go to Fisherman's Wharf, check the electronic display at the stop and board the streetcar heading towards "F Market & Wharves".
