Boudin Bakery Pier 39: Classic San Francisco Clam Chowder
Craving the quintessential San Francisco experience? Our guide to Boudin Bakery at Pier 39 covers the must-try clam chowder bread bowl, menu tips, and why it's a perfect stop.

Hello, fellow food adventurers!
One of the absolute must-try dishes I eagerly anticipated for my San Francisco trip was, without a doubt, clam chowder.
I remember trying clam chowder in Seattle a while back, and while delicious, I found it a tad on the salty side for my palate. So, I was incredibly curious to see how San Francisco's version would compare.
When researching the best spots around Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, one name consistently popped up: Boudin Bakery.
On this visit, I made sure to stop by and experience their famous clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl firsthand.
Why Boudin Bakery is a Must-Visit on Your San Francisco Itinerary

My itinerary for that day looked something like this:
Airport → BART → F-Line Streetcar →
Boudin Bakery → Bike Rental → Crissy Field
This route worked out perfectly! After exploring Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, heading straight to Boudin for lunch before picking up a bike was incredibly convenient. It was an ideal spot to fuel up.
If you're planning a visit to Pier 39, Boudin Bakery is a fantastic culinary stop to incorporate into your day.
What I Ordered at Boudin & The Total Cost

Menu Item | Price (USD) |
Bread Bowl Clam Chowder | $16.99 |
Lobster Roll | $28.99 |
Beverage | Not Ordered |
Total Paid (incl. tax) | $53.07 |
With tax included, my total came to $53.07!
The Clam Chowder Exceeded All Expectations

I was personally incredibly satisfied with the clam chowder!
The clam chowder I had in Seattle previously had very large chunks, which offered a great chew, but I found it a bit too salty for my taste.
Boudin's version, however, had a perfectly balanced creaminess that wasn't overwhelming, and the delicate clam flavor shone through beautifully. It was much more to my liking.
Tearing off pieces of the iconic sourdough bread and dipping them into the rich clam chowder was an absolute dream combination!
The bread itself is delicious, but when paired with the chowder, it's easy to see why this dish is a San Francisco staple.
Ordering Tips for Solo Travelers & Groups
If you're traveling solo, I recommend choosing your menu based on your itinerary and hunger level.
Travel Style | Recommended Menu |
Planning a hearty lunch | Bread Bowl Clam Chowder |
Exploring multiple eateries | Clam Chowder Cup + Another Dish |
Traveling with 2+ people | Share 1 Bread Bowl + 1 Lobster Roll |
Due to a flight delay, I had been practically starving since morning, so that bread bowl tasted absolutely divine.

I had planned to enjoy the lobster roll later at Crissy Field, so I got it to-go.
However, after devouring the bread bowl, I was surprisingly full and could only manage a few bites of the lobster roll...
Ultimately, I ended up discarding most of it. Looking back at the receipt later, it hit me how pricey it was! (A moment of self-reflection there.)
I still regret not eating it when I was hungrier; I'm sure it would have been much more enjoyable then.
Navigating the Ordering Process at Boudin

Upon your first visit, you might notice two lines, which can be a bit confusing.
One line is specifically for purchasing bread only, while the other is for ordering prepared food.
Look for the menu board positioned above the display of beverages; that's the line for ordering clam chowder and other hot dishes.
I was momentarily puzzled myself, but knowing this beforehand can save you some precious time.
Also, if you're traveling solo, keep in mind that there might not be anyone to hold your spot. I ended up circling the outdoor seating area a few times before finally snagging a table.
Picnic at Crissy Field? Here's What to Prepare

I decided to take my lobster roll to-go and enjoy it at Crissy Field. I envisioned a perfect picnic with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, but upon arrival, I found the grass to be surprisingly overgrown and not ideal for a comfortable picnic setup.
Having a picnic blanket would have made it much more comfortable, but I luckily found a spot with chairs. Just be aware that seating can be limited.
Consider bringing a lightweight picnic blanket!

Overall Impression: San Francisco's Iconic Clam Chowder Spot

I actually had reservations for Fog Harbor Fish House during this trip as well. It's incredibly well-known as a fantastic clam chowder spot, and I debated a lot, but as a solo traveler, ordering a full seafood meal felt a bit overwhelming.
If you've already experienced Boudin and are looking for another top-tier clam chowder spot, I absolutely recommend checking out Fog Harbor Fish House!
Ultimately, choosing Boudin this time was a satisfying decision. It fit perfectly into my itinerary for exploring Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, and I got to savor San Francisco's signature bread bowl clam chowder.
Next time I visit with family or friends, I'd love to try the seafood dishes at Fog Harbor Fish House. (Just another reason to plan another trip to San Francisco!)
