Our Seongsan Ilchulbong Hike with Dad: A Review
✅ The incline is steep, and there are many stone stairs, making it an intermediate-level hike or higher.
✅ Morning dew can make surfaces slippery, so hiking shoes are a must.
✅ Always bring at least one small bottle of water.

My dad was determined to see the sunrise, so we set out for the Seongsan Ilchulbong summit. Even though we reached the top about two minutes after the sun had fully risen, witnessing the surreal crater of Seongsan Ilchulbong and the vast Jeju ocean was still incredibly romantic : )

It was our first time climbing Seongsan Ilchulbong, and the ascent was primarily made of stone stairs, which were surprisingly steep. It required full concentration just to keep going.
However, the descent was much safer, with more wooden decks installed along the path.

Despite the wooden decks, the stone stairs still had a slight dampness, likely due to morning dew, humid weather, and the peak's proximity to the ocean. If you're visiting with older family members, definitely bring sturdy hiking shoes and plan for a slow, steady 30-minute climb.
My dad is an experienced hiker, so he was fine, but it's crucial to be cautious if you're not used to such climbs.
Because we arrived at the parking lot later than planned, even with our best efforts, we reached the summit just a little after sunrise. The scenery was still fantastic, but it was a slight disappointment to miss the exact moment the sun appeared.

On the way down, you get to see the landscape facing away from the ocean, towards Jeju City, which is equally stunning. The descent, being downhill, only took us about 12 minutes.

As you come down from the paid course, you'll naturally merge onto the free course. This allowed us to explore the Umuotge Coast area for a bit longer. The view of Seongsan Ilchulbong from here is also spectacular, so if you've already made it to the summit, take your time to enjoy this area too : )

Today, I've detailed our Seongsan Ilchulbong hiking experience with my dad, especially for those hoping to catch the sunrise from the summit, and particularly for those planning to visit with their parents.
I truly hope that readers of this guide will avoid making our mistake of missing the sunrise and get to witness that incredible moment when the sun first graces the horizon!
