Seolban Magok Review 2026: Kim Gyu-won's Favorite Rib Soup Spot
Discover Seolban Magok, a beloved Seoul eatery known for its hearty Galbitang and spicy Shingaltang. Featured on a hit Korean TV show, this spot offers authentic flavors and a cozy vibe perfect for any traveler.

Ever catch a glimpse of a celebrity's favorite eatery on a TV show and realize it's one of *your* go-to spots? That's exactly what happened to me recently while watching the popular Korean program 'Omniscient Interfering View,' when actor Kim Gyu-won raved about Seolban.
This particular branch, Seolban Gangseo-Magok, is a place I frequent whenever I'm meeting friends around the Balsan and Gangseo areas. It first opened its doors in late 2024, and I've been a loyal customer ever since, drawn in by their famous Galbitang (beef rib soup) and Shingaltang (spicy rib soup).
I've introduced many friends to Seolban, and every single one has given it a resounding thumbs-up. Let me tell you all about this incredible restaurant!

Getting to Seolban Gangseo-Magok & Parking
📍 Seolban Gangseo-Magok Branch
101ho, Balsan W Tower 2, Gonghang-daero 222, Gangseo-gu, Seoul
Seolban Gangseo-Magok is conveniently nestled between Balsan Station Exit 8 and Magok Station Exit 4. Magok Station is slightly closer, making for an easy walk. If you're driving, you can utilize the underground parking garage at Balsan W Tower.
While Seolban has expanded to several locations, including one in Ilsan where I live, I still prefer the Magok branch. The Magok area itself is a hot spot brimming with fantastic restaurants and cafes, and the Galbitang and Shingaltang here just seem to taste exceptionally good every single time.
Interior

Here's a look at Seolban's interior. This photo is a bit older, so now you'll find partitions between tables, ensuring a more private and comfortable dining experience for guests.
Even on a weekday evening, the restaurant is packed with diners. I remember visiting with a friend on a weekend, and people kept pouring in until a waiting line eventually formed.

Disposable aprons are readily available, of course, and the overall atmosphere is bright and inviting, even at night.
Some meat restaurants can have a lingering greasy smell, but most buildings in Magok are newly constructed, and Seolban clearly maintains strict hygiene. It's always immaculately clean.
Seolban Menu

Let's take a look at Seolban's menu. For 1-2 diners, I highly recommend ordering either the 'Nutritious Beef Rib Soup' (Yeongyang Ugaltang) or the 'Spicy Rib Soup with Skirt Steak' (Yeongyang Shingaltang).
If you're visiting with three or more people, you can't go wrong with the 'King's Braised Short Ribs' (Wang Galbijjim) or the 'Rib and Intestine Hot Pot' (Galgojjeongol), and definitely make sure to add the fried rice at the end!

*For those unfamiliar with Ugaltang and Shingaltang, a quick explanation: Ugaltang is their classic Galbitang, a hearty beef rib soup. Shingaltang, on the other hand, is their 'Spicy Galbitang.' It features the same rich Galbitang broth but with a spicy seasoning that adds a fantastic kick, topped with grilled skirt steak. It's truly a delicious combination of rib soup and steak!
These days, many restaurants compromise on ingredients to save costs, even with something as fundamental as chili powder. But at Seolban, they proudly use domestic Korean chili powder, so you can enjoy your meal with confidence.

You can refill your side dishes as much as you like from the self-serve bar. Notice the thoughtful touch of providing disposable gloves and tongs for hygiene!

The side dishes include three essential Korean varieties: kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi), ojingeo jeotgal (spicy fermented squid), and wasabi kimchi.

This is the Shingaltang as seen on 'Omniscient Interfering View,' and it looks absolutely mouth-watering! But does it live up to its on-screen appearance in real life?

In person, it's even more breathtaking! It looks much more delicious than it did on TV, doesn't it? As it boils, the generous toppings of green onions and skirt steak truly ignite your appetite.

The kiosk also provides detailed instructions on how to best enjoy your Shingaltang.
It's recommended to eat the skirt steak separately from the soup for the best flavor. Mixing it all at once can alter the rich taste of the broth itself.

If you look closely, the beef is perfectly grilled with a delicious smoky char. You could easily polish off a bowl of rice with just the meat and side dishes alone, even without the soup.
While the soup's color looked quite spicy, it wasn't as hot as I expected. It's less spicy than Shin Ramyun, making it a level even children might enjoy.

With temperatures soaring, approaching 104°F as August begins, many of us are feeling the heat. For a nourishing pick-me-up, I also highly recommend the 'Nutritious Beef Rib Soup' (Yeongyang Ugaltang).
The ribs are large, meaning you get significantly more meat than at other Galbitang restaurants. And the broth? It's simply divine. A touch of salt is all it takes to make it utterly irresistible.

On this particular visit, I was with friends, so we also ordered the 'King's Braised Short Ribs' (Wang Galbijjim). Now you understand why I recommend it for groups of three or more, don't you? The Galbijjim's presentation is absolutely stunning.

Topped with shishito peppers, mushrooms, and sesame seeds, the short ribs are incredibly tender without a single tough piece. The seasoning is perfectly balanced.

Having tried every dish on the menu at least once, my personal favorite remains the 'Spicy Rib Soup with Skirt Steak' (Yeongyang Shingaltang). The skirt steak practically melts in your mouth, and the portion of meat is so satisfying. It's truly a signature dish that's hard not to love! For an extra treat, try ordering cold noodles (naengmyeon) to enjoy alongside the beef.
So there you have it – my beloved local gem, Seolban Gangseo-Magok, in the Magok and Balsan area. Whether you're dining solo, on a date, or with a large group, this spot offers delicious Galbitang and Shingaltang for every occasion.
It was already a favorite among my friends, and now with its TV feature, it feels even more validated! If you find yourself in the Gangseo area of Seoul, make sure to pay them a visit!
