Even though I am not strictly religious, I always find myself drawn to temples around Buddha's Birthday. There is something incredibly soothing about the mountain air and the colorful paper lanterns glowing in the dark.

Usually, I make a trip to Bomunsa Temple (and stop by the famous Mulre-banga restaurant for some delicious grilled deodeok!).

But this year, I wanted to try something different. I heard that Joong-Ang Sangha University in Gimpo was hosting an exhibition of "Jang-eom-deung"—massive, grand sculptural lanterns. Standard street lanterns are everywhere, but these large-scale light sculptures sounded too beautiful to miss!

The main displays are located near the university buildings. You can drive right up to the campus parking lot, or if you enjoy walking, you can park near the entrance and hike up the hill.

The entire winding road from the entrance to the campus is lined with vibrant lanterns. Walking under this glowing canopy in the quiet night felt absolutely magical.

It is an incredible spot for photos! I actually had to jump out of the car on the way up because the illuminated pathway was simply irresistible.

While the massive sculptural lanterns are the main attraction—giving off a subtle vibe of Seoul's famous Cheonggyecheon Lantern Festival—I fell in love with the delicate red lotus lanterns floating gracefully in the background.

Since this is a university campus, there are plenty of benches near these lotus displays. If you decide to walk up the hill, this is the perfect spot to sit down, rest, and enjoy the tranquil glow of the lights.

Joong-Ang Sangha University is a true hidden gem. Because it is relatively undiscovered, you can enjoy these magnificent lights in complete peace and quiet.

If you are looking for a unique night walk near Seoul or want to experience Korea's lantern culture in a serene setting, I highly recommend visiting. The lanterns are lit every evening starting at 7:00 PM and will remain on display until late May 2026.
