Recently, I was looking for a fantastic spot to catch up with an old friend in Mangwon-dong, a neighborhood absolutely brimming with amazing eateries. After sifting through countless options (a truly delightful dilemma!), I stumbled upon Sanbol, a highly-rated roast beef don restaurant with an impressive 4.9-star rating.
And let me tell you, their beef don was an absolute revelation! The meat was incredibly tender, and the sauce combination was simply perfect. It exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to share my experience with you. 😊

It's also just a 5-minute walk from Mangwon Market, making it a perfect stop for a meal after exploring the market or the trendy Mangwon-dong area (often called 'Mangnidan-gil').
Atmosphere
The restaurant lives up to its description as a 'small Japan in Mangnidan-gil,' offering a cozy and charming ambiance.
With seating for about 10 people at a single counter, it's a wonderfully intimate space.
This setup also makes it a popular spot for solo diners, which I loved seeing!
It truly felt like a quaint Japanese eatery, making for a relaxed and comfortable dining experience with my friend.
We visited on a weekday evening in 2026 and were lucky enough to walk right in without a wait. However, given the limited seating, it can get quite busy during peak hours.
They don't take reservations, but if there are two or more teams waiting, you can use the Catchtable app for remote waiting.
If you're planning a visit on a weekend or during a busy mealtime, I highly recommend checking Catchtable before you head out!
Menu
Ordering is a breeze using the in-store kiosk.
Sanbol offers a variety of Japanese rice bowls, including Roast Beef Don, Hambagu Don, and Buta no Kakuni Don. Since it was our first time, we didn't hesitate and both ordered their signature Roast Beef Don.
When our dishes arrived, the visual alone was captivating – a generous portion of roast beef covering the rice!
And that perfectly round, vibrant yellow egg yolk? Absolutely mouth-watering!
Taking my first bite, I instantly understood why this place is so highly raved about – the beef was unbelievably tender. Seriously, it melted in my mouth!
Despite being roast beef, it wasn't chewy or dry at all; it was so thinly sliced that it could be artfully arranged like a flower.
Sanbol uses Australian MB8~9 grade wagyu, which is sous-vide and then thinly sliced.
Even though the slices were delicate, the rich flavor of the beef truly shone through. Eating several slices with a generous scoop of rice enhanced the juicy, savory taste even more.
You could truly taste the dedication in every bite, from the daily sous-viding of the meat to the homemade tare sauce.
The combination of the savory, umami-rich homemade tare sauce and the refreshing, creamy yogurt sauce was simply divine.
Adding a touch of wasabi elevated the flavor even further, providing a delightful pungent kick that sharpened the overall taste. It transformed the smooth, rich flavors with a zesty, edgy finish!
Overall Verdict
If you're looking for a unique dining experience during your Mangnidan-gil date, a fan of authentic Japanese home cooking, or simply craving a truly exceptional roast beef don, Sanbol is a must-visit.
I'd definitely visit again! 😋
