As we walked from our lamb skewer dinner towards the cafe, its striking exterior immediately caught our eye from a distance. It stood out from the familiar streetscape of Daerim-dong, making us increasingly curious about what lay inside.
Upon entering, we were greeted by an impressive array of desserts and pastries: fruit cakes, rich cheesecakes, chestnut tiramisu, apple crumbles, and even pumpkin cream cheese whole wheat bread. Having just finished a hearty dinner, we only ordered the bingsu that evening. But seeing the tempting display of baked goods, I knew I'd have to return on an empty stomach next time, ready to sample more than just dessert!
Discover Rostone Hill: The Slanted Second Floor
After placing our order, we ascended to the second floor, aptly named 'Rostone Hill.' True to its name, the floor literally slopes, giving you a unique sensation as you walk. This level is designed primarily for solo visitors, featuring individual seats with attached mini-tables.
Unlike typical cafes where you can rearrange furniture, here you simply swivel the table to find your comfortable spot, which adds to its distinct charm. My brother, sister, and I visited together, and since the third floor was full, we settled on the second. It was a weeknight, so the second floor had just about 4-5 people, while the third floor had around 10, making the overall atmosphere pleasantly quiet. The third floor also offers larger tables perfect for groups and an inviting outdoor terrace. I imagine it would be wonderful to sit out on the terrace on a cooler day.
The Star: Fresh Mango Bingsu with Two Whole Mangos
Our order was the Fresh Mango Bingsu, featuring two whole mangos, priced at ~$20. After about a 10-minute wait, our bingsu arrived, and the presentation alone was enough to impress us.
The perfectly ripe mango offered a delightful, smooth sweetness, and the shaved ice itself had a rich, milky flavor. Adding another layer of texture, crispy coconut flakes were sprinkled on top.
Be warned: this bingsu is incredibly generous!
There was so much milky shaved ice that even after we'd devoured all the mango, we still had plenty of ice left. We simply added more mango sauce and condensed milk to enjoy the sweet treat right down to the last spoonful.
Considering the sheer quantity and the two fresh mangos, we felt it was a very reasonable price, especially compared to the often-staggering prices of hotel mango bingsu I've seen.
Next Time, It's All About the Bakery
Even while savoring our bingsu, my mind kept drifting to other tantalizing items on the menu: the chestnut tiramisu, apple crumble, and pumpkin cream cheese whole wheat bread.
If I find myself near Daerim Station again, I'd definitely want to stop by just for the bakery items. The displayed pastries looked so incredibly delicious that it felt a shame to leave without trying them.
