A Perfect Summer Indoor Escape in Yongsan: Must-See Exhibitions

Hey there, fellow travelers!
I'm your travel influencer guide, Nabongsoon.
Living in Jeju Island, my family and I hopped on a plane
to Seoul the second summer break started.
With the relentless humidity and sizzling heat,
I was searching for a cool, air-conditioned spot in Seoul for my son and me.
That's when we headed over to Yongsan,
which is packed with indoor activities and things to see!
Among the top attractions in Yongsan,
we visited the National Museum of Korea.
With my son, who dreams of becoming a historian,
we took our time exploring the various galleries.
While browsing the diverse collections
at the National Museum of Korea,
we also checked out the special exhibition, <Our Dining Table>,
which is currently on display in the Special Exhibition Gallery.
Let me give you a detailed look into what makes
this popular Seoul museum an absolute must-visit.
1. Getting to the National Museum of Korea (Perfect Indoor Spot in Seoul)

We were hanging out in Jongno and decided to take a taxi,
but we got stuck in some pretty heavy traffic.
Take it from me—public transit is definitely the way to go in Seoul!

Address
137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul

Admission to the main galleries is free, though some special exhibitions
require a paid ticket.
Also, the Children's Museum has limited entry (320 visitors per 80-minute session),
so you'll want to make sure you book online
in advance before you go!
If you're taking the subway, head out of Exit 2 at Ichon Station (Line 4).
It's just one stop away from Yongsan Station. While it looks close,
it's actually a 20 to 30-minute walk, so during the hot summer months,
skipping the traffic and taking the subway straight to Ichon Station
is absolutely the smartest choice.

After wrapping up our museum tour,
my son and I spent the rest of the day exploring I'Park Mall and Yongridan-gil nearby,
which are filled with fantastic food and endless shopping.
2. Special Exhibition: <Our Dining Table>

The National Museum of Korea is absolutely massive.
Just checking out the free galleries and the gift shops could easily
fill a whole day, and you still might not see it all!
During school breaks in this sizzling heat,
it's the perfect, cool getaway to spend meaningful time
with a history-loving kid without breaking the bank.
We had such a wonderful time here.

So we started by wandering from the 1st to the 3rd floors,
exploring the Korean history galleries my son had his heart set on,
along with the fascinating world history exhibitions. We started with the free galleries
first!

Afterwards, we headed over to the paid special exhibition,
<Our Dining Table>.

3. Highlights of the "Our Table" Exhibition

This special exhibition at the National Museum of Korea (a must-visit in Yongsan)
is a truly meaningful showcase. It traces the roots of K-food,
which is currently enjoying massive global attention, and allows you to explore
3,000 years of Korean culinary history all in one place.

It beautifully captures how our everyday dining tables have evolved
in tandem with our daily lives. It dives deep into the questions of
with whom, how, what, and why we have eaten throughout history.

As a prime indoor destination in Seoul, it offered a cool, comfortable escape
where visitors of all ages—from kids to adults—could slowly browse
and connect with the fascinating theme of food.

We got to explore the rich history of Korea's culinary culture,
the unique food customs shaped by the local climate and geography, and see
over 600 artifacts—including cooking utensils, tableware, and historic crafts—
that paint a vivid picture of how our dining tables have been set throughout time.

First, we explored a wide array of fascinating artifacts
that reveal the traces of everyday life and
the history surrounding our dining culture.

It was incredibly special to see artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to today,
including Kim Hong-do's famous genre painting Saecham (Mid-day Snack)
and Park Soo-keun's still life painting Gulbi (Dried Croaker) on the Cutting Board.

We were also able to explore our rich dining customs
through the central keywords of "People" and "Nature."

Through the tableware, traditional eating habits, and ingredients
crafted with ancient wisdom, we caught a fascinating glimpse
into how people of the past lived their daily lives.

Various video screenings throughout the space brought the dining scenes
vividly to life. I thought sections showing things like "how to eat ssam (lettuce wraps)"
would be incredibly fun and interesting for international travelers to watch!

My kid, who is a huge fan of fish, was absolutely thrilled
to see the wide variety of fish that our ancestors used to eat
on display throughout the exhibition.

It's the perfect summer destination in Seoul! We spent hours wandering around
the cool indoor space without feeling tired or frustrated. The creative use
of interactive media art throughout the halls made this particular
exhibition incredibly engaging and fun.
4. Wrapping Up Our Visit to the National Museum of Korea

Since we used to live in Seoul when my child was younger,
we still make it a habit to visit Seoul museums during school breaks
to enjoy all the wonderful, diverse exhibitions on display.

And indeed, as the crowning jewel of Yongsan and a world-class hotspot,
the National Museum of Korea never fails to leave us inspired
and deeply moved with every single visit.

If you're looking for a cool indoor getaway in Seoul,
with plenty of things to do for kids and adults alike,
exploring the various exhibitions and the souvenir shop
will make half your day fly by in no time.

From a lighthearted and fun history lesson
to the <Our Table> exhibition showcasing the absolute best of K-food,
it was a wonderful opportunity to make
unforgettable memories with my son.
Also, the 2026 Hansik (Korean Food) Festa is scheduled to run
for three days from October 23 (Fri) to October 25 (Sun), 2026,
at the plaza in front of the Mirror Pond and the Main Auditorium
of the National Museum of Korea, so be sure to check it out!

If you're searching for a cool, comfortable, and enriching escape
from the sweltering summer heat, look no further than
the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, packed with incredible sights.
