Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop: Create Your Scent
Discover Muhwawon, a unique Bukchon perfume workshop in Seoul! Learn how to create your own custom fragrance, from scent selection to blending, in this immersive and inspiring experience.

My friend and I recently had an incredible experience crafting our very own perfumes in Bukchon, Seoul! When I first thought about making perfume, I imagined simply picking from a few pre-selected scents and having an assistant mix them for me.
However, Muhwawon was a much more in-depth and immersive process than I anticipated. It was a true journey of discovery, where we meticulously sniffed each aroma and experimented with different combinations to find a scent that genuinely matched our personal preferences.
What truly stood out was the sheer variety of fragrance options available, especially their captivating SCENTS OF KOREA collection. Having tried making plaster diffusers with various scents at Bangsan Market before, I can confidently say that Muhwawon's quality and selection are in a league of their own.
This workshop helped me discover my ultimate signature scent! I was so thrilled with the result that I'm already looking forward to returning soon to create another unique fragrance. This experience was so genuinely exciting that I ended up writing a rather detailed post about it!

📍 Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop
3rd Floor, 23 Yulgok-ro 6-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul
The Space
Muhwawon is located on the 3rd floor of a building (right next to the former 7.8 Anguk, a personal favorite!). There's a clear "Perfume Workshop 3F" sign outside, making it easy to spot.
As soon as we stepped out of the elevator, we were immediately charmed by the stunning interior. It was absolutely my style! The overall aesthetic featured calming gray and black tones, accented with natural materials like stone and wood, creating a serene atmosphere. I jokingly wished I could just move in!
Perfume bottles and fragrance oils were neatly displayed along one wall, giving the space less of a typical "pretty workshop" vibe and more of a professional artist's studio. It felt like a truly focused environment for creating a masterpiece.

Choosing Your Scent
As we settled into our seats, we found a tablet, a theory notebook, scent strips, beakers, and various fragrance oils neatly laid out. The setup itself was so aesthetically pleasing, I was already thrilled before we even began!
We started with a short video explaining perfume structure and the workshop process. Then, the real fun began: smelling each individual fragrance. Both Korean and English support are available, and there are English-speaking staff members, so bringing non-Korean speaking friends is absolutely no problem!🙂↕️🤍

One of the best parts was the truly diverse range of scents. While familiar floral and woody notes were abundant, I was especially intrigued by the SCENTS OF KOREA line, which featured unique Korean-inspired ingredients. It felt like a collection curated just for my taste!
We went through each scent, marking our favorites, gradually narrowing down the options for our final blend. After sniffing all 48 options, my nose definitely needed a break, but the coffee beans provided helped clear my senses, allowing me to pick out all the ones I loved.

Here’s the thing, though: choosing individual scents you like is one thing, but blending multiple scents together is an entirely different challenge! I felt a bit lost, my eyes darting around, when the perfumer kindly stepped in to assist.
I'd give intuitive feedback like, "Oh, I wish it had a bit more of a grassy smell." The perfumer would then offer expert advice, for example, "The osmanthus is quite strong right now, so if you add some Hanji (traditional Korean paper), it won't necessarily enhance the grassy note, but it will help balance the sweetness."
With this kind of guidance, my scent gradually evolved closer to the vision I had in mind! I really appreciated that they didn't just give us a pre-determined "right answer." Instead, they helped us navigate our chosen fragrances to find the direction we wanted. It felt truly collaborative and personalized!
Crafting Your Perfume
After selecting our desired scents, we began the exciting process of combining the fragrance oils and testing them. It wasn't a one-and-done creation; instead, we worked through several iterations:
1st blend → Test → 2nd blend → Re-test → 3rd blend
This iterative process allowed us to adjust the ratios and fine-tune the blend until we achieved the perfect combination. It was truly a bespoke experience!

What made this even more enjoyable was the flexibility. Even though my friend and I came together, we didn't have to follow the same method. I preferred to explain my desired direction to the perfumer and get recommendations, while my friend opted for a more freestyle blending approach, experimenting with different combinations on their own.
It was fascinating to sit at the same table and yet end up with completely different, unique results! This highlights a great aspect of Muhwawon: whether you're new to fragrances and need guidance, or you're a creative spirit who wants to freely experiment, the workshop caters to all styles.

The Finished Product
Once the final ratios were set, we precisely measured out the ingredients according to our unique recipes to complete our perfumes.
My friend and I each ended up with completely distinct fragrances, and we even got to name our creations! Mine was named Mountain Buddha, and my friend's was Papierduft - nicht in der Bibliothek (Paper Scent - Not in the Library).

What's truly amazing is that my finished perfume ended up combining the best elements of all my favorite existing fragrances! I simply described the general feeling I was going for, and with the perfumer's recommendations and a few adjustments, I genuinely felt like I'd found my signature scent! I can't wait for the two-week maturation period to pass so I can finally wear it! 🥹🤍🤍
My Favorite Perfumes | Key Notes | Papierduft Similarity |
Aesop Tacit | Green Aromatic Breeze Dry Wood | Forest + Wormwood + Sandalwood |
Aesop Eidesis | Incense Sandalwood Warm Dry Wood | Buddhist Incense + Sandalwood |
Trudon Deux | Forest / Green Tree Incense | Forest + Wormwood + Incense |
SHIRO Kinmokusei | Soft Slight Floral Slight Fruity | Osmanthus |
SHIRO White Tea | Clean Light | Linen + Hanji |

The sleek black packaging also added to the premium feel. It wasn't just getting a bottle; it felt like receiving a beautifully finished product. It would even make an excellent gift if you went alone and created something special for someone else!
Would I Go Again?
A resounding YES! Absolutely! I'm already eager to go back and create another perfume! I've been raving about this experience to all my friends. Seriously, this isn't just because I received a discount; it was genuinely fantastic! I usually don't write such enthusiastic reviews, but I'm truly sincere about this one.
At ~$36 per person, it might not seem like the cheapest activity if you're only considering the 50ml perfume bottle you take home. However, it's so much more than just buying a fragrance. It's an immersive experience where you get to smell dozens of unique scents, discover your preferences, and go through the entire process of blending and creating a truly personalized perfume. It's a completely different experience from simply purchasing a ready-made scent!
If you're looking for a Bukchon perfume workshop and want an engaging activity to do with a friend or partner that goes beyond just eating or grabbing coffee, this is a perfect fit!

Whether you're a fragrance novice needing guidance or someone who loves to freely experiment, Muhwawon accommodates all styles, making it ideal for groups with differing preferences. Plus, the serene and beautiful space made the hour-and-a-half workshop feel like a truly artistic endeavor!
I'm already planning to create another unique scent next time! Although, who knows, I might just love my current creation so much that I'll make the exact same one again!
Well, that's all for today's happy review! Until next time!
