I was captivated by the savory scent of squid,

and found myself hitting the brakes at a certain spot.

It's none other than 'Mokhwa Hyugeso,' an old-school 'gamaek' (a corner store serving beer and snacks) with a nostalgic vibe.

I'll be sharing all the details, including its location, parking, menu, and prices.

And I'll honestly tell you about the taste when I ate it right there on the spot,

the taste when I took it to go and ate it at my accommodation,

and even a direct comparison of the two!

Mokhwa Hyugeso is located on the Jongdal-ri coastal road in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju.

It's in a spot with panoramic views of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak and Udo Island,

making it the perfect place to drop by during a scenic drive!

The sign isn't very big, and first-time visitors can easily miss it,

so I recommend setting your navigation and slowing down as you get close,

and keep an eye out for the squid hanging out to dry 🦑

Some people park right next to or in front of the shop with their hazard lights on,

but if there are a lot of customers, it can cause long waits,

and it's also a nuisance for cars passing by on the main road 🥲

There's an open lot-like parking area behind the store,

so I recommend parking there safely ❗️❗️

The sea is right in front, so if you sit at an outdoor table,

you can enjoy your meal to the sound of the waves – it's truly charming! 🌊🩵

What is 'Jun-chi Squid'❓

In Jeju, when regular squid is semi-dried to a moist texture in the Jeju sea breeze,

people say it's "as tender and delicious as a Han-chi (cuttlefish)",

which led to it being called 'Jun-han-chi' and then shortened to 'Jun-chi' ◡̈

So, if you see 'Jun-chi Gui' or 'Jun-chi Squid Gui' written anywhere,

you can think of it as semi-dried squid.

(Fun fact, your knowledge just leveled up! Haha)

They also sell beer, other alcoholic beverages, and soft drinks – it wouldn't be complete without them!

They even have beer made by Mokhwa Hyugeso itself, apparently?

A regular beer is ~$2, and Mokhwa Beer is ~$5 ^^..

The price of squid varies by market price, depending on its size when caught!

On the day we visited, it was ~$11.

If you pay by bank transfer or cash, you get a ~$1 discount,

so we paid ~$10.

Jun-chi (Semi-dried) Squid Taste Review

They say it takes about 10 minutes to grill on the elvan stone,

but even on weekdays, this place is so popular,

so it's best to expect at least 15 minutes of waiting to keep your mind at ease!

Even if it's just one piece… ⭐️

Hoping the pager would buzz soon,

my family and I also waited for about 15 minutes!

From the very first bite… it was truly worth the wait! 🤤

It's the kind of flavor that makes the beer just flow down, seriously hahaha

(How many 'seriously' did I just say?)

My teeth aren't the best (grandma-level, you know?)

so I don't usually prefer dried seafood,

but this was really soft, chewy, and delicious..

Mokhwa Rest Area's version, even while I'm writing this post,

is making my mouth water…🦑💭🤍

Mokhwa Rest Area Squid Takeaway Review

It was even more delicious than I expected when I tried it in the store,

so, feeling a bit sad to leave it behind, I took two pieces to go

so we could grill and eat them during our BBQ, haha!

Grilling them on the grill at our accommodation was tasty too,

but since it was direct heat, a bit more moisture escaped,

and it couldn't quite match that unique juiciness…

It's definitely true that at Mokhwa Rest Area,

grilling it on the stone plate makes it even better•• haha

Overall Review & Conclusion

Jeju Mokhwa Rest Area is such a hot spot,

and with it being summer vacation season,

there was a constant stream of people!

The hot and humid weather made me a little tired, but

the atmosphere alone made it a place worth experiencing at least once!

For those who, like me, love this kind of old-school vibe,

or are curious about the taste of moist and soft half-dried grilled squid,

I wholeheartedly recommend it👍
