After living on Jeju Island for about seven years, I've learned a crucial tip for grocery shopping during your trip: it's less about finding the most famous supermarket and more about convenience – how easily it fits into your route to your accommodation. While Jeju boasts several large supermarkets, veering off your travel path just to shop can be a real-time sink. If you're staying in Old Jeju City or the Tapdong area, Matro Tapdong is definitely worth a visit. It's a sizable store where you can pick up everything from fresh sashimi and sushi to delightful deli items like Jokbal (pig's trotters), fried chicken, and pizza, making it an ideal stop before heading back to your hotel or vacation rental.

You'll find Matro Tapdong conveniently located near Tapdong Coastal Road, Chilseong-ro Street, and the famous Dongmun Market. It's a great spot for locals in Old Jeju to do their regular shopping, but it's particularly perfect for travelers. Imagine exploring Dongmun Market or Chilseong-ro, then swinging by Matro Tapdong on your way back to your accommodation. From my years of experience on Jeju, I've found that the best supermarket isn't necessarily the most talked-about one, but rather the one that's directly on your route from your current activity to your lodging. Believe me, you don't want to add unnecessary miles (or time!) to your day by going out of your way for a grocery run, especially when your accommodation might be further than you think.

Depending on your lodging, the travel distance can be surprisingly long, so there's no need to go in the opposite direction just for a supermarket.

When most people think of big supermarkets in Jeju, names like E-Mart, Lotte Mart, or Hanaro Mart often come to mind. But if you're in Old Jeju, Matro Tapdong offers an excellent alternative!

What I consistently loved about Matro Tapdong during my visits was its sheer size and the incredible variety of food options. From fresh fruits and vegetables to meats, processed foods, and a fantastic deli section, it has everything you need. It's perfect for both daily grocery runs and simply grabbing some delicious prepared foods during your trip. Whenever I explored Jeju's old downtown area, I often found myself stopping at Matro Tapdong just to stock up on treats from their deli counter.

Fresh Sashimi and Sushi at Matro Tapdong

One of the first sections that always catches my eye here is the fresh sashimi counter. You'll find beautifully packaged flounder sashimi and assorted platters, perfect for a relaxed meal at home or in your rental. Even living on Jeju, you don't always want to go to a specialized sushi restaurant. On evenings when I felt like a drink at home, I'd often pick up some sashimi and other snacks from the supermarket.

The sushi selection is equally impressive, with a wide array of choices. You'll find an incredible selection of hot foods like potato-wrapped fried shrimp, Dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken), hot dogs, fried squid, and even Mentaiko (spicy pollock roe) toast. There's so much to choose from!

With Jokbal (braised pig's trotters), roasted chicken, traditional whole fried chicken, and even pizza, you'll be spoiled for choice and might find yourself deliberating over what to pick!

Exploring the deli section here always reminded me of Lopia supermarkets I visited in Japan. The joy of browsing and discovering so many delicious ready-to-eat foods feels very similar!

While I often visited Matro Tapdong for my regular groceries or deli treats when I lived on Jeju, I truly believe it's an excellent stop for travelers to stock up before settling into their accommodation. With everything from beef and pork for grilling, to fresh vegetables, drinks, and snacks, you can easily prepare for a fantastic BBQ at your pension or vacation rental all in one go.

You can also pick up sashimi or sushi for dinner, or even some fried chicken for a late-night snack! So, if you're planning to enjoy a variety of delicious foods in the comfort of your room, Matro Tapdong is definitely the large supermarket on Jeju for you.

I highly recommend Matro Tapdong, especially for those staying in Old Jeju City or the Tapdong area, or even in nearby Jocheon or Hamdeok, which aren't too far from Old Jeju. It's perfect for grocery shopping after exploring Dongmun Market or Chilseong-ro, allowing you to pick up sashimi, sushi, and late-night snacks for your accommodation all in one go. Conversely, if your itinerary takes you to areas further from the city center, like Aewol, Seogwipo, Gujwa, or Seongsan on the eastern side of Jeju, there's no need to make a special trip to Matro Tapdong. Having lived on Jeju for a long time and experienced many overnight stays across the island, I can confidently say that when it comes to supermarkets during your Jeju trip, it's always most convenient to choose one that aligns with your travel route. So, if you're planning to grocery shop in the Old Jeju area, definitely keep Matro Tapdong in mind!
