As you explore Italy's southern Puglia region by rental car, you'll often encounter unique farmhouse accommodations surrounded by white stone walls and olive trees!
On this trip, I had the pleasure of staying at an agriturismo near Otranto:
Masseria Panareo.

It's a place I'd highly recommend for
couples or travelers with a rental car who want to experience the authentic charm of Southern Italy at a relatively reasonable price.
While the rooms themselves aren't overtly flashy or luxurious, the spacious outdoor pool, delicious meals,
and excellent location for exploring the beaches at the southern tip of Italy's Salento Peninsula made it a truly satisfying stay.

While prices vary by season,
during the off-peak season,
a standard room can often be booked for around the low ~$76s per night, making it quite a fantastic value among Southern Italian masserias!

✔️ Key Location & Transport Tips
☑️Rental Car is Essential
It's not located within a town or city center, but rather tucked away in a quiet spot near the coastal road.
Public transport access is difficult, so
a rental car is absolutely essential!

☑️Spacious Private Parking
With such a large property, parking was never a concern.
Well-provided free private parking made loading and unloading luggage incredibly convenient.

☑️Perfect for Exploring the Southern Coast
It's conveniently located just about a 10-15 minute drive from Otranto, the charming city on the eastern coast.
Plus, it's only about an hour's drive to the very southern tip of the Salento Peninsula (Leuca),
making it perfect for exploring hidden beaches all the way down.

What is a 'Masseria'?
Upon arriving at the accommodation,
the first thing that strikes you is
the sturdy, fortress-like stone building!

As you travel through Puglia, you'll frequently see the word 'Masseria' attached to accommodations.
I was curious what the difference was between a Masseria and an Agriturismo, so I looked it up.

💡 What is a 'Masseria'?
Dating back to the 16th-18th centuries, a masseria was a large-scale farmhouse estate built like a fortress, complete with high stone walls and watchtowers, designed to protect the farm and its residents from pirates or invaders.

In modern times, many have been beautifully converted into charming agriturismi (farmstay guesthouses/hotels) or resorts.
While there are many truly luxurious masserias out there, if you're a traveler just looking to experience the unique charm of one, Masseria Panareo is an excellent choice!
It really does look like a fortress once you know the history.

Lobby & Check-in

The lobby was connected to the restaurant.
The staff at the counter kindly assisted us with the check-in process.

The view of the distant sea was absolutely stunning,
filling me with even more excitement for the rest of our trip
as we checked in.

They even helped us carry our heavy luggage to the room
and provided friendly guidance.
Room Review (Most Affordable Standard Room Type)
For a great value,
we booked the most basic Standard Room!

✅ Room Condition & Interior
If you're expecting an ultra-modern, luxurious hotel room,
it might feel a little rustic.
It wasn't drastically different from the pictures,
so it met our expectations.
The Masseria's characteristic thick stone walls
and high ceilings gave it a cozy, cool vibe,
and the room itself felt very private.
It was quiet, too! : )

We visited in the hot summer,
so we were really satisfied that the air conditioning was quite cool and the room was close to the pool.
✅ Bedding & Noise
The mattress and bedding
were soft and free of dampness, perfectly comfortable to melt away our travel fatigue.
Being located on the outskirts, away from the main village,
there was absolutely no outside noise at night.
We truly got a blissful night's sleep without needing earplugs!

However, since it's on the first floor and connected to the courtyard,
ants might find their way into the room if you leave fruit out, haha!
But we had a very comfortable stay with no issues. :)
✅ Amenities & Bathroom

The shower and toilet areas were also quite spacious.
Basic body wash, shampoo, and towels
were neatly provided,
and the water pressure and hot water in the shower worked perfectly and consistently,
so we used them without any inconvenience.
Price Comparison & Booking Tips
Masseria hotels don't have as many rooms
as typical large resorts,
so they tend to get fully booked quickly during peak season.
Especially since the meals (breakfast/dinner) receive great reviews,
I highly recommend choosing the breakfast-included option when booking!
(Breakfast is usually included anyway.)

PAYMENT TIP
Based on my research right now,
Booking.com seems to be the most affordable :)
When I travel in Europe,
Booking.com is my go-to choice.
They have lots of B&B options,
the UI is user-friendly,
and it's great for managing payments, which is why I use it the most.
Feel free to book through your preferred platform.
Local Sightseeing Tips

During my stay at Masseria Panareo,
I explored the nearby beaches,
enjoying leisurely swims and scenic drives.

Before or after check-out, you could also take a stroll along the city walls of
Otranto Old Town,
which is only about a 10-minute drive away.
(Fair warning: Otranto can get quite crowded during peak season... I personally found it just okay.)

Or, you could visit Porto Badisco, famous for its beautiful sea,
or drive along the coastal cliffs further south.
Following the scenic route,
a trip to discover the hidden beaches of the Salento peninsula
was absolutely wonderful.

The drive through the southern part, in particular, felt like cruising on a deserted island road,
and that feeling was incredible – it was truly the highlight of this trip.
If you're planning a trip to the south,
I highly recommend creating a playlist of songs to enjoy while driving.
These happy memories are now
saved as core memories!!
Both the surroundings and the accommodation itself were beautiful,
and I highly recommend Masseria Panareo.

I'll share a detailed guide to the stunning beaches near Otranto that I visited
