The Puglia region in southern Italy

is home to so many incredibly beautiful coastal towns.

One of the absolute standouts among them is none other than

바로 Otranto!

With its whitewashed alleyways winding inside ancient fortress walls

and the shimmering, crystal-clear turquoise sea right at its doorstep,

it offers a picture-perfect landscape

you just have to see with your own eyes.

It has quickly become one of our absolute favorite cities.

If you're planning a day trip,

1. Otranto: Fast Facts & Basic Info

Otranto is

a charming port town nestled right at

the very tip of the heel of Italy’s boot.

It’s also famous for being

the city where the sun rises earliest in all of Italy.

Because of its strategic location historically

linking East and West,

it carries a bittersweet history—including the Ottoman invasion—

but today, it has beautifully sublimated those trials

into magnificent art (such as the cathedral mosaics),

standing proud as a UNESCO World Heritage city.

From waters so clear you can see right to the sandy bottom

to the incredibly charming alleyways of the Old Town,

there is so much to see and fall in love with.

2. How to Get to Otranto from Lecce

Traveling from Lecce to Otranto

takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours,

depending on your mode of transport.

💜 By Train (Using the FSE Railway) 💜

You can catch the FSE (Ferrovie del Sud Est) train

from Lecce Station.

Typically, you'll need to transfer once at Maglie Station,

with the entire journey taking about 1 hour and 10 to 30 minutes.

Train schedules are much more limited on Sundays and public holidays,

so checking the timetable beforehand is a must!

We took this train for our trip.

💜 By Car (Rental Car) 💜

If you drive down the SS16 highway,

you can get there in about 45 minutes,

making it the fastest and most convenient option.

💜 By Bus (Summer Season Only) 💜

If you're visiting between June and September,

a tourist shuttle bus service called Salento in Bus

runs frequently, which is incredibly handy

for travelers relying on public transport.

Although the 2026 schedule isn't out yet,

it's expected to be very similar to last year's,

so it’s definitely worth checking out as you plan your trip.

3. Top Attractions in Otranto

💜 Otranto Cathedral 💜

Dating back to the 12th century,

the massive Tree of Life floor mosaic

is so intricate it is hailed as a true treasure of humanity.

Also, the chapel housing the remains of 800 martyrs

quietly whispers the solemn and majestic history

that this city has endured.

💜 Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese) 💜

Rising majestically right by the sea,

this fortress feels like a strong shield guarding the city.

The contrast between the rugged texture of the stone walls

and the sparkling blue sea is absolutely breathtaking.

4. Wandering the Old Town

It's no exaggeration to say that

the charm of Otranto's Old Town

is entirely in its winding alleys.

I found myself gasping "so beautiful!"

at literally every single turn.

The moment you step inside the city walls,

you'll feel like you've been transported

to a completely different world.

The laundry hanging between narrow alleys,

and the colorful flowers blooming in pots

contrasted so beautifully with the white walls

that I just couldn't stop snapping photos.

I never thought I'd take

this many pictures of other people's doorways! 🤣

Make sure to pop into the tiny boutiques

hidden along the alleyways.

From kitchenware carved from local olive wood

and colorful, traditional Apulian ceramics,

to handcrafted leather goods made by local artisans,

just window shopping will make time fly by.

Just a quick heads-up: since we visited in March during the off-season,

many shops were either under renovation

or closed, so keep that in mind.

We decided to just let

our feet guide us through the alleys.

Because every single corner was so gorgeous,

we wanted to explore every nook and cranny

rather than trying to follow a map.

During the peak summer season, flowers would be in full bloom

and more shops would be open,

offering even more to see.

But we absolutely loved the quiet, peaceful vibe

that you can only experience during the off-season.

With temperatures around 17°C (63°F),

it was the perfect weather for a leisurely stroll.

5. Best Sea Photo Spots

The sea in Otranto

boasts an almost unreal, dreamlike color.

Here are the absolute best spots

to capture your next postcard-perfect shot.

Just keep in mind, it is even more beautiful

in person than in photos!

💜 Bastione Pelasgi 💜

This is the highest viewpoint

you'll find while walking along the city walls.

Standing here,

the endless horizon of the Adriatic Sea

stretches out before you.

On a clear day,

you can even spot Albania across the water!

The glimpses of the sea

peeking through the grand gateway

leading into the Old Town are incredibly beautiful.

The deep blue sea, framed perfectly by the ancient gateway,

is more stunning than any framed painting could ever be.

This is a charming little beach located right on the edge of the town center.

With its terraced stone steps,

it’s the perfect spot to sit down and soak in the ocean views.

The water is incredibly crystal clear—

so much so that you can see every single grain of sand.

Since the sea is shallow and calm,

it's a fantastic spot for swimming and cooling off in the summer.

The tiny anchored boats,

the sea as calm and peaceful as a lake,

and the panoramic view of the white-washed town rising in the distance—

this is the ultimate viewpoint to capture all of that magic in a single frame.
