When you're planning your Rome itinerary,
a trip to nearby Southern Italy is an absolute must-do.
Southern Italy is home to incredible, must-visit destinations
like Pompeii, Sorrento, and Positano.
However, with these spots being quite a distance from each other,
you might be wondering about the best way to get around.

Today, I'll be sharing my own experience on a Southern Italy tour from Rome,
and even tell you how to book it with a discount! Keep reading to find out more!
How to Explore Southern Italy?

From Rome, it's about a 3-hour drive to Southern Italy (using Pompeii as a reference point).
So, you generally have two main options:
renting a car or joining a bus tour.

Renting a car offers the freedom to choose your own destinations,
but driving long distances in an unfamiliar Italy
can be quite exhausting.
What's more, the roads along the Amalfi Coast and in Positano
are incredibly narrow, making driving quite challenging.

That's why I highly recommend a day bus tour for a comfortable
and relaxed journey to Southern Italy.
Not only does it offer a comprehensive itinerary to visit Southern Italy
from Rome in just one day, but you also get to travel with a guide
who provides enriching explanations.

When you look into Southern Italy bus tours, you'll find many operators,
which can make choosing the right one a bit overwhelming.
Most itineraries are quite similar, and I certainly felt that dilemma
when planning my own trip!
After much deliberation, I chose the tour linked below.
There were two main reasons for my choice.

First, the tour's final leg included a ferry ride to see the Amalfi Coast,
and second, it offered a generous two hours of free time in Positano,
which I was really looking forward to.
(And you get ample time at Pompeii too!)

Southern Italy Tour Review

The Uno Travel bus tour gathers and departs at 6:20 AM
from in front of Hotel Galles, near Termini Station.
Don't worry about the early start;
you'll have plenty of time to catch up on sleep
during the approximately three-hour drive to Pompeii!

On the bus, you can charge your devices using the USB ports
available in front of each seat, so it's a good idea to bring your charger.
Breakfast Stop

On the way to Pompeii, you can stop at a rest stop
for a simple breakfast or coffee.

We had an early morning start for our meeting point, so we were quite hungry since we hadn't had breakfast yet.
Thankfully, we were able to kick off our trip with a hearty panino, croissant, and coffee at the rest stop!
Pompeii

Before arriving at our first destination, Pompeii,
our guide gave us a fantastic pre-tour explanation
and handed out receivers.
(Don't forget to bring your own earphones!)
Just a heads-up: Pompeii can get scorching hot under the sun, so it's a good idea to bring a parasol or umbrella, and sunglasses!

Pompeii is a city that vanished, buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.
But thanks to archaeologists, the buried ancient city has been excavated, offering us an incredible glimpse into the lives of Romans from 2,000 years ago.
It's truly a place everyone should visit at least once!

I came to Pompeii without doing any prior research,
but it was amazing how just following our guide led us through all the must-see spots
with the most efficient route.
What truly stood out was that places that might just seem like mere stone pillars if explored alone
came alive with meaning, making the experience even more profound.

It was quite moving to see with my own eyes
the plaster casts of victims from the volcanic eruption,
as well as Roman-era roads and sidewalks dating back 2,000 years.

We wrapped up our Pompeii itinerary with stunning views,
all against the backdrop of the oldest surviving Roman stone amphitheater.
Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for a historical site,
but our guide brought the stories to life in such an engaging way
that I completely lost track of time following them around!
Lunch

Lunch was at a local restaurant in Pompeii,
and perhaps because our guide jokingly warned us it might not be amazing,
we actually found it quite delicious!

The crispy fried shrimp and calamari paired perfectly with beer or Fanta, and best of all,
they gave us one pizza per two people, which was fantastic!
The pizza seemed fresh out of the oven, and it was quite tasty!
(Though, the pasta was definitely just so-so...)

To top it all off, they even served gelato,
allowing us to truly enjoy a course meal.
And since you can enjoy all of this for just 15 Euros per person,
we were incredibly satisfied!
Sorrento Viewpoint

After lunch, we headed to the Sorrento Viewpoint.
I discovered that if you sit on the right side of the bus,
you get to truly soak in the stunning sea views of Naples as you pass by.
We, however, unknowingly sat on the left,
and it was the first time I regretted my seat choice!

As you admire the landscapes of Naples,
you'll soon arrive at the Sorrento Viewpoint.
Thanks to the clear blue sky, the sparkling sea, and the gentle breeze,
the scenery from Sorrento Viewpoint was absolutely fantastic!

What's more, the lemon sorbet our guide gave us for free
was truly beyond expectation!
Coupled with the views from Sorrento Viewpoint,
it felt like the romance of the moment doubled.
I highly recommend taking lots of photos here and savoring the delicious lemon sorbet!
Minibus Transfer

Next, we traveled from Sorrento Viewpoint to Positano.
However, as I mentioned earlier,
the roads in Positano are narrow, making it impossible for large buses to enter.
So, we transferred to minibuses,
and since we had a large group, we took two minibuses.
Positano

As you drive along the beautiful coastline in the minibus,
you'll soon arrive in Positano.
Positano is truly a Mediterranean-inspired resort town that will make you gasp in awe the moment you see it.
The combination of the sea and the cliffside village creates a landscape unlike anything I've ever experienced,
so I just couldn't stop taking photos..!

Our guide was especially helpful, sharing tips that allowed us to make the most of our 2 hours in Positano,
exploring every nook and cranny.
The most memorable spot was a viewpoint in Positano where you could take a 'once-in-a-lifetime' shot with the above picture as your background.
It was truly wonderful to see Positano exactly as I had imagined it with my own eyes..!

Positano is a place where both your eyes and taste buds will be delighted, with plenty of lemon-themed souvenir shops,
lemon sorbet, gelato, and other delicious treats to enjoy.
Here's a tip: if you pack your dinner before boarding the ferry,
you can enjoy a simple meal while gazing at the Amalfi Coast from the ferry!

Finally, I recommend coming down from the Positano viewpoint to the beach,
dipping your feet in the water, or taking photos against the backdrop of the magnificent cliffside village.
The photos taken near the beach were also incredibly beautiful.
The Rome Southern Tour: Not an Option, But a Must!

For those with a tight Rome travel itinerary, like us,
taking a Southern Tour is undoubtedly the best option.
We were so satisfied, it felt like the perfect plan for our trip.
Not only does it include essential Southern destinations like Pompeii and Positano,
but it was also great to comfortably travel by bus,
allowing us to recharge our energy along the way.
Most of all, our guide's fun and insightful explanations
truly brought each destination to life,
making our exploration even more meaningful.
