From Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station:
Your Essential Guide to the Leonardo Express & Booking Tips
Hello, fellow travelers!
I recently embarked on an incredible trip to Rome in August 2026.
Today, I'm excited to share my fresh, first-hand experience on how to get from
Fiumicino Airport (FCO, Leonardo da Vinci Airport) to the city center's Termini Station!

From navigating immigration during the peak August season to smart train booking tips,
and even crucial warnings about potential delays or early departures for round trips,
I've got all the detailed insights you need for a smooth journey.

It's often cheaper than other online retailers.
1. Fiumicino Airport Immigration Time in August 2026 & Important Notes for Europe Entry from September Onwards (EES Introduction)
Typically, mid-August at Rome Airport is bustling,
with the immigration hall often packed with travelers.
However, I noticed it felt much smoother compared to previous years.

With the introduction of automated immigration gates
and the airport's expansion in 2025,
I managed to clear immigration, collect my luggage, and exit the customs area
in just about 1 hour.
It was surprisingly quick!
However, starting September 2026,
it's highly advisable to allocate significantly more time
for immigration procedures.
Europe's New Entry/Exit System (EES)
Is Being Fully Implemented

The EU is rolling out the EES (Entry/Exit System) for non-EU travelers,
which will fully replace the traditional passport stamping.
Upon your first entry, you'll need to register your fingerprints
and undergo facial biometric recognition (via kiosk or counter).
While EES wasn't fully operational when I visited in mid-August 2026,
the new machines were already installed and ready.
Since the initial registration process will inevitably increase waiting times per person,
it's expected that processing at major European gateway airports,
including Rome Fiumicino Airport,
could be delayed from the previous 1 hour to 1.5-2 hours or even more.
Comparing Transportation Options

✅Airport Bus (Shuttle Bus)
It's affordable at around ~$7-8 USD one-way,
but there's a risk of taking over an hour due to city traffic congestion.

✅Leonardo Express Airport Train
About ~$15 USD one-way, reaching Termini Station
non-stop in just 32 minutes.
This is my top recommendation!
The Leonardo Express is the fastest and most comfortable airport transfer option.
2. Ticket Machine vs. Trenitalia App: Smart Booking Tips
After exiting the airport arrivals hall, follow the signs for 'Train / Stazione Ferroviaria'
until you reach the train station gates.

You'll see red ticket machines (Ticket Machine) in front of the platform,
but the queue for on-site ticket purchase can be quite long.
Most people are tourists, which often slows down the process.
That's why I highly recommend buying your ticket via a mobile app.
Both the on-site ticket machines and the mobile app
charge the same ~$15 USD one-way.
☑️Recommended Method
Don't waste time waiting in line at the station.
I suggest downloading the official Trenitalia app
before your trip and booking your ticket as soon as you clear immigration.
※ Important Note for Trenitalia App Bookings
When booking via the app,
you can only purchase tickets up to 10 minutes before the train's departure.
If there are only 5-8 minutes left before departure,
you'll only be able to select a train for the next time slot.
Therefore, it's safer to book a train departing 10-15 minutes later
while you're walking towards the platform.

3. My Experience: Airport → City & City → Airport
One of the most important things to keep in mind when taking Italian trains
is the possibility of delays.
Journey from Airport to Termini Station
(15-Minute Delayed Departure)
I arrived at the platform with my luggage and boarded my booked train,
but the departure signal didn't come on time.
Ultimately, the train departed about 15 minutes late.

But even if there's a delay, the train doors might still close on time,
or a ticket inspector might check for boarding.
So, you absolutely must be inside the train by your scheduled departure time.
Since even airport trains can be delayed,
I don't recommend planning your subsequent itinerary too tightly.
Return Journey from Termini Station to Airport (1-Minute Early Departure)

On my return trip to the airport from Termini Station,
a completely different situation unfolded.
Exactly one minute before the scheduled departure,
the doors closed even before the clock hit the exact time,
and the train departed one minute early!
While it's rare for someone to try to board in the last minute,
I could imagine someone feeling quite frustrated.
The lesson learned here is that you never know what to expect with trains,
so it's always best to arrive well in advance!
Key Takeaways

✅August 2026 High Season Immigration:
Allow at least 1 hour for immigration and baggage claim.
✅Ticket Purchase:
Use the Trenitalia app instead of crowded on-site machines
(must purchase at least 10 minutes before departure).
✅Platform Arrival:
Trains can be delayed or even depart early, so always be on the platform at least 10-15 minutes before departure.
Once you've settled into your accommodation near Termini Station,
take a leisurely stroll through the charming alleys around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona,
savor a delicious gelato, and truly begin your Roman adventure!
