With the autumn rains starting this September 2026, there's nothing quite like the sound of raindrops and the cozy ambiance to spark a craving for that ultimate comfort food. You know the one – golden-brown Korean pancakes paired with a cool glass of makgeolli!

Today, I'm bringing you an honest review of Mapo Cheonghakdong Buchimgae's Main Branch. This legendary spot is a true icon of Gongdeok's famous Jeon Alley, and it even gained wider fame after being featured on the popular Korean TV show "Infinite Challenge" in their 'Jung Chief Treats' special. It's been a local favorite for years and continues to draw crowds!

Reservation & Waiting Tips

At Mapo Cheonghakdong Buchimgae, reservations are available through Naver, Korea's most popular search engine and booking platform.

You can book in 30-minute increments from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. If you're planning a group gathering or special occasion, especially on a rainy day when this place gets packed, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance!

I visited around 10:00 PM on a Friday evening, treating it as a second stop for drinks and snacks.

Luckily, it was just past the peak dinner rush, so I was able to grab a table without any waiting.

Exterior & Interior

As you exit Gongdeok Station, Exit 5, and step into the famous Jeon Alley, you'll spot the bright yellow sign of Mapo Cheonghakdong Buchimgae from a distance. Out front, you'll be greeted by an incredible display of dozens of varieties of freshly made jeon (savory Korean pancakes) and twigim (fried snacks).

What really impressed me was how all the pancakes are kept neatly inside clean display cases! This meticulous attention to hygiene means you can pick your favorites with complete peace of mind.

Many people also opt to pick out their selection directly from here for a convenient takeout order.

The interior is quite spacious, spread across two floors. The first floor has an energetic, open-air pub ambiance, perfect for soaking in the lively market atmosphere.

Upstairs on the second floor, you'll find partitioned tables, making it a great choice for business dinners or more private group gatherings.

Menu & My Order

This place boasts an incredibly diverse menu of both food and alcoholic beverages, ensuring there's something for everyone, regardless of age or preference.

You can conveniently order drinking snacks and makgeolli directly from the tablet at your table. If you prefer to customize your selection rather than getting an assorted pancake platter, you can grab a basket, pick out individual jeon and twigim from the display, and pay for them upfront.

If you're selecting individual jeon and twigim from the basket for dine-in, there's a minimum order of ~$11.

My Experience

The complimentary side dishes are a delightful start: a warm seaweed soup, crisp pickled onions, savory dried radish kimchi, and a refreshing yeolmu kimchi (fermented young radish kimchi).

This yeolmu kimchi, in particular, was perfectly sour and crunchy, cutting through the richness of the pancakes with a clean, refreshing taste. It's so good, you'll want a refill!

For my order, I carefully selected a variety of items to reach the ~$11 minimum: bread fritters, fish cake hot bar, vegetable fritters, gimmari (fried seaweed rolls), cheese sticks, and even a nostalgic Pikachu pork cutlet! It was a fun way to try a bit of everything.

And just like that, our selection was transformed! The staff warmed up our chosen pancakes, and with a pair of scissors and tongs, we cut them into bite-sized pieces, creating a fantastic second-round appetizer platter.

Bongpyeong Buckwheat Makgeolli

The first drink we ordered was this award-winning buckwheat makgeolli. Made with domestic rice and buckwheat, it has a wonderfully deep, savory flavor. The balance of sweetness, acidity, and carbonation was just perfect.

Gimpo Geumssal Seonho Makgeolli

After finishing the first bottle, we reordered this makgeolli. Crafted with three generations of expertise, it's brewed with 100% premium Gimpo rice. It offered a clean, natural sweetness without any artificial flavors, and its strong carbonation made it incredibly refreshing.
