🌺 We highly recommend Maison Akai if you are:
✔︎ Looking for a cozy, aesthetic date spot in Daehangno
✔︎ Craving the ultimate refreshing cold soba noodles
✔︎ A hardcore fan of premium, molten cheese katsu

I recently headed out to Hyehwa with my mom for a classic Daehangno date to catch a play. Before heading to the theater, we needed a great lunch spot. After searching for local recommendations, Maison Akai kept popping up as a must-visit tonkatsu joint.
Since we both had a massive craving for crispy katsu, we decided to check it out. It's incredibly easy to find, located right on the second floor near Hyehwa Station Exit 4.

They open at 11:30 AM, and we arrived right around noon. It was already almost completely full! By the time we started eating, a line had formed outside. No wonder they have a dedicated waiting area—this place is incredibly popular!
A Look Inside Maison Akai

Since the restaurant was packed, I had to wait for tables to clear out to snap these quick photos. The interior is decorated with adorable, cozy details that make it an absolute dream for a lunch date.

Once you're seated, you can easily browse the menu and order using the tablet at your table, which also has various katsu sauces ready to go.
Maison Akai is famous for combining premium tonkatsu with Japanese-style noodles. We wanted to try one of each, and luckily, they had just launched their summer 2026 specials: the Akai Cold Soba and the Akai Teppan Cheese Katsu. Of course, we had to order both!
Our Honest Review

After ordering, they brought out the side dishes. The kimchi was perfectly crisp, but the real star was the warm fish cake soup loaded with fried tofu skin—it had a surprisingly comforting, spicy kick!
The Akai Cold Soba

First up is the refreshing Akai Cold Soba. Just looking at it makes you feel cooler! The broth is house-made and infused with a rich vegetable blend.
What really set this apart was the fresh perilla leaves on top. I'd never had cold soba served with perilla leaves before, but the herbal notes paired beautifully with the savory broth. I'm still daydreaming about this bowl! 🤤
The Akai Teppan Cheese Katsu

Next is the showstopping Akai Teppan Cheese Katsu. Look at that presentation! It is an absolute masterpiece for cheese lovers.
Underneath the crispy katsu lies a generous, sizzling bed of rich, melted cheddar cheese.

And the katsu itself? It’s stuffed to the brim with gooey mozzarella cheese! As a massive cheese fan, this was pure heaven.
You might think double cheese (cheddar + mozzarella) would be too heavy or greasy, but it wasn't at all! It was savory, salty, and incredibly satisfying. We literally scraped the plate clean. It's impossible to choose a favorite between the refreshing cold soba and this decadent cheese katsu!

The meal also came with a side of perfectly cooked rice and a mountain of fresh, crisp cabbage salad, leaving us completely full and satisfied.

Whenever I eat Japanese food, ordering a Melon Soda is a must. I'm incredibly picky about my melon sodas, but the version here gets a massive stamp of approval! It tasted exactly like the authentic floats you get in Tokyo, topped with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream.
Don't Skip the Complimentary Ice Cream Brûlée!

If you leave a quick review, they'll treat you to a complimentary Ice Cream Brûlée. It is mind-blowingly delicious!
I gave my mom a tiny bite and then secretly devoured the rest while she stepped away. If you love sweet desserts, this caramelized, sugary treat is going to blow you away. Maison Akai is truly a master of everything: katsu, soba, drinks, and desserts!

While many popular spots in Hyehwa can be quite overpriced, Maison Akai offers incredibly reasonable prices for the premium quality they deliver. From the spectacular visuals of the cheese katsu to the perfectly balanced cold soba, plus amazing drinks and desserts, it’s a flawless dining experience.
I’ll definitely be bringing my friends back here next time we meet up in Hyehwa!
