After a recent trip to Gangnam, I couldn't resist making a spontaneous stop at Kyobo Bookstore. It had been ages since I last visited this particular branch – I usually frequent both the Gwanghwamun and Gangnam locations – but to my pleasant surprise, not much had changed. It still holds that familiar, comforting charm.

Getting to Kyobo Bookstore Gangnam, and Parking

To reach Kyobo Bookstore Gangnam, take Seoul's efficient subway system to Shin-Nonhyeon Station (신논현역) on the Shinbundang Line. Exit via Exit 8, and you'll immediately spot the impressive Kyobo Tower to your right.

Here's a local's tip for faster access: instead of entering the main Kyobo Tower entrance, walk a little further to the right and behind the building. You'll find a set of stairs leading directly down to the bookstore. This shortcut saves you time, as going through the main entrance requires taking an elevator.

For those driving, parking is available from the 3rd basement level to the 6th basement level of Kyobo Tower.

If you're a Kyobo Bookstore member, parking support varies by your membership tier. Platinum and Gold members receive 2 hours of complimentary parking. Silver and Friends members get 1 hour free with purchases over ~$7, or 2 hours free with purchases over ~$21. Purchases from both Kyobo Bookstore and Hottracks (a stationery/music store often co-located) can be combined for validation. If you exceed your complimentary parking time, an additional fee of ~$1 is charged for every 10 minutes.
Kyobo Bookstore Membership Tiers

Membership tiers are determined by your cumulative net purchase amount over the past three months. While I used to maintain Gold or Platinum status, my reading habits have shifted a bit, and I'm now balancing physical books with e-reading services, so I don't buy as many books as I once did.
Inside the Bookstore

The Gangnam branch features a central layout with elevators and restrooms. Let's explore some of the unique sections and features that caught my eye!

One standout area is the 'Premier Seller' section. Unlike typical bestsellers, these books are hand-selected by Kyobo Bookstore itself, based on comprehensive sales data and reader feedback. They represent what Kyobo considers truly 'valuable books,' making this a fantastic spot to discover hidden literary gems.

Keep an eye out for the friendly robots! Much like those you might spot at Incheon International Airport, these autonomous helpers gracefully navigate the aisles, busily transporting books to their designated sections. It's a fun, futuristic touch in a traditional setting.

I remember a few years ago, the book search PCs and keyboards were quite dated, making them a bit clunky to use. But I'm happy to report that they've been wonderfully updated! I often come to the bookstore with a specific book in mind, so I make frequent use of these improved search stations.
Baro Dream Service

On this particular visit, I picked up 'A Contradiction' by Yang Gui-ja, a renowned Korean author.

The main reason I opt for 'Baro Dream' is the fantastic 10% discount you get! Simply log into the Kyobo Bookstore app and search for your desired book.
At the bottom of the screen, you'll see options for 'Baro Dream' and 'Order.' Select 'Baro Dream.'

Set your current store location – I selected the Gangnam branch. Once you've chosen your book, select 'Go to Baro Dream Zone to pick up directly.'

Head to the payment area, and you'll find the dedicated 'Baro Dream Zone.' It's often much quicker than the regular checkout lines, with fewer people and a streamlined pickup process. It's a fantastic system that more visitors should know about!

Once your Baro Dream purchase is complete, you'll receive a notification message via KakaoTalk (Korea's most popular messaging app). Just tap 'Check Order Barcode' and show it to the staff member – it's that simple!
Other Fun Finds

Don't miss the 'cute overload' section! This area is a hit with students and is perfect for couples on a date. It's a wonderful way to explore each other's interests and enjoy a wholesome outing together.

During my visit, I also noticed a selection of stylish parasols, an absolute must-have for Seoul's warm summers. While hats and sunglasses are great, nothing quite beats a parasol for keeping the intense sun at bay.

I also stumbled upon a fascinating 'book light' – something I hadn't seen before. With 5 brightness levels, 3 color temperatures, and a feather-light weight of just about ~1.8 ounces, it's perfect for late-night reading at home or while traveling.

At home, I use a rather traditional wooden book stand, but the transparent acrylic ones on display looked incredibly sleek and modern.

As we get older, reading smaller print can become a challenge. Instead of reaching for a magnifying glass, opting for large-print books is a thoughtful and comfortable solution.

It's no secret that brick-and-mortar bookstores face tough competition in the digital age. We've seen many independent shops disappear, and even major chains like Bandi & Luni's have closed their doors. My hope is that iconic bookstores like Kyobo, which represent the heart of Korea's literary culture, continue to thrive for generations to come.
