For those planning a summer getaway
and feeling a bit anxious about the heavy rains,
we have put together the projected forecast for Seoul/Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Jeju,
along with some essential safety tips
for traveling during South Korea's rainy season!
1. 2026 Monsoon Season (Jangma) & Key Features
This year's monsoon season started later than usual.
Typically, the monsoon (known locally as Jangma) begins around 06/19 in Jeju,
06/23 in the Southern regions,
and around 06/25 in the Central regions.
However, in 2026,
Jeju and the Southern regions entered the wet season on 06/30,
while the Central region followed on 07/01.
Compared to average years,
Jeju started about 11 days later, the Southern region 7 days later,
and the Central region (including Seoul) was delayed by about 6 days!
Because the monsoon started later,
there is a higher chance that peak summer vacation schedules will overlap with periods of torrential downpours.
If you have travel plans, it is highly recommended
to check the regional monsoon timeline first.

While there are slight variations across different areas,
the rainy season is expected to stretch through late July for most parts of the country.
Since this aligns directly with the busy summer holiday season,
be sure to keep this in mind if you are mapping out a trip in July!
3. Essential Tips for Traveling During the Monsoon
This year's weather pattern is less about continuous light rain
and more about sudden, heavy localized downpours concentrated in specific areas.
Instead of cancelling your trip entirely,
it is smart to check the real-time weather advisories about 3 days before your departure!
For outdoor itineraries like valleys, hiking, or beach visits
which are heavily affected by weather conditions,
always prepare alternative indoor routes or activities.
Especially if you are flying to destinations like Jeju Island,
airlines will send out real-time flight status updates,
so make sure to keep a close eye on your notifications!
