Jeonju offers a unique dish you won't find anywhere else: Mul-jjajang. Here's my delicious review of Jinmi Bajeom, a must-visit spot for this specialty.

On my last day in Jeonju, I was debating what to eat. I was craving something hearty, perhaps a great hangover cure, and definitely something truly special to Jeonju.
That's when I decided to seek out the legendary Mul-jjajang!

Jinmi Bajeom, Jeonju

12-3 Jeollagamyeong3-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea
✔️ Operating Hours:

(Last order at 8:30 PM)

✔️Menu Highlights:
Mul-jjajang, Samseon Mul-jjajang (Spicy Seafood Mul-jjajang), Tangsuyuk (Sweet and Sour Pork), Jjamppong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup), Palbochae (Stir-fried Seafood and Vegetables), and other classic upscale Chinese dishes reminiscent of old-school department store restaurants.

Jeonju's Mul-jjajang is quite famous, and a quick search reveals many long-standing, authentic eateries. I initially planned to visit Daejangbo, another well-known spot, but to my dismay, it was already closed when I arrived just past noon! 🥲 So, I quickly pivoted and headed to Jinmi Bajeom, which was conveniently only a 3-minute walk away.
📍 Jinmi Bajeom
12-3 Jeollagamyeong3-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do
When searching for Jinmi Bajeom in Jeonju, you might find two locations. Make sure you head to the one at 12-3 Jeollagamyeong3-gil! I was honestly a bit nervous on the way, hoping they wouldn't also be closed for the day.

Thankfully, Jinmi Bajeom was open for business! From the moment I stepped inside, the friendly owner greeted me with a warm welcome.
Jinmi Bajeom has two floors. The first floor was completely full, so I was guided upstairs to the second level.

The second floor was bustling with both Jeonju locals and solo travelers enjoying their meals.

I even noticed a 'Blue House clock' – a clock from the presidential residence – though I'm not sure from which presidency. (It was quite fascinating!) Overall, from the moment you step in, the restaurant exudes a charming, historic vibe, clearly a venerable establishment, which I absolutely loved.

Sitting by the wall, I noticed some alluring artwork – reminiscent of mythical figures from old Hong Kong films. They were so beautiful, they kept catching my eye! 😉 Anyway, we ordered the Samseon Mul-jjajang (spicy version), Chinese cold noodles, and a medium Tangsuyuk.
I'd seen debates online about whether the spicy or non-spicy Mul-jjajang was better at Jinmi Bajeom, and while I almost wavered, I stuck to my gut and ordered the spicy one!

Apparently, while most places only offer spicy Mul-jjajang, Jinmi Bajeom is one of the few that also serves a non-spicy version. I even overheard another customer ask where Mul-jjajang originated, and the staff proudly stated that this was the original spot! (We were too shy to ask ourselves.)
For side dishes, we received kimchi, raw onions, and pickled radish. The kimchi was just okay, but dipping the crisp raw onions in vinegar and chunjang (black bean paste) was absolutely delightful and refreshing!

I also took a moment to admire the beautiful fan I'd bought as a souvenir in Jeonju the day before, featuring calligraphy by master Im Man-soo.

Oh, and to balance things out (you know, to avoid gaining too much weight!), we ordered a Coke Zero.
The staff was also very attentive, refilling our water glasses whenever they were low.
First to arrive was the Tangsuyuk. It immediately brought back nostalgic memories of the sweet and sour pork I used to enjoy weekly with my grandparents at classic Chinese restaurants inside department stores. (= And yes, that means it was incredibly delicious!) The batter was perfectly crisp, the pork had no unpleasant odor, and the sauce had a wonderful balance.
This is what Tangsuyuk should be!
After several disappointing experiences with Tangsuyuk lately, this was a truly satisfying treat.

Then, the moment arrived – Jeonju's famous Mul-jjajang! It had a consistency somewhat similar to Udon noodles, brimming with fresh seafood. The texture was fascinating: it had a satisfying weight to it, but wasn't overly thick or gloopy. It was simply perfect and incredibly flavorful!
Delicious!!!!!
Not too light, not too heavy – that ideal middle ground with a rich, soupy base was just what I needed. It felt like the ultimate hangover cure, honestly.

The Chinese cold noodles featured thin, light noodles. While tasty, the peanut sauce wasn't quite my favorite, so I definitely preferred the Mul-jjajang overall.

As I left the restaurant, I spotted the Geumseongdang building, which I've often seen featured on Jeonju Hanboknam's Instagram.

I also saw a unique bus – perhaps Jeonju has its own city tour bus, similar to what you'd find in Seoul?
At Jeonju Station's KTX platform, I noticed quite a few international travelers. Jeonju is quite a compact city, especially the main tourist areas, making it wonderful for exploring on foot and gently wandering from place to place. It's truly a gem for an authentic Korean experience!
