1. History of Jeonju Nambu Market

Let's continue our story of the

2-day, 1-night trip to Jeonju that I enjoyed with my son and parents.

In the evening, after admiring Jeonju's nightscape

around the Hanok Village, where past and present coexist,

we visited the Jeonju Nambu Market Night Market, a traditional market

bustling with bright lights late into the night, offering abundant food

and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

This iconic Jeonju market originated from the historic 'Nammunjang' market,

which stood outside the southern gate of Jeonju during the Joseon Dynasty.

For hundreds of years, it served as a vibrant hub where goods from all over the Honam region gathered,

and it was a lively place where common folk lived, offering a variety of sights

and delicious foods unique to Jeonju.

Continuing its long historical legacy,

the second floor now hosts 'Cheongnyeonmol' (Youth Mall), where you can experience unique and stylish concepts.

At night, the Jeonju Night Market fills the alleys with bustling crowds,

offering a wide array of snacks. It's so popular that the most sought-after stalls

often have long queues.

It's a place that evokes both nostalgic charm and lively excitement,

where the depth of history coexists with youthful energy.

Our three generations thoroughly enjoyed a delicious night out here.

If your goal is to explore the night market's food, it's best to visit

on a Friday or Saturday evening.

If you're visiting by car, you can use nearby

parking lots. However, do keep in mind that parking can be challenging,

especially on weekend evenings when they're usually full.

We parked at our nearby accommodation and walked over.

If your accommodation is in the Hanok Village area like ours,

it's definitely within walking distance.

For the Nambu Market parking lot near the entrance,

daily parking costs ~$4, with a grace period of 5 minutes.

Many shops inside the market or night market stalls will provide you with a parking voucher,

so be sure to get your 1 hour of free parking! After 60 minutes of free use,

you'll need to pay ~$0 for every 10 minutes.

Pungnammun Gate is located very close to Jeondong Catholic Cathedral.

Once the main southern gate of the old Jeonju Walled City, it's one of Jeonju's iconic sights.

The tranquil essence of the ancient fortress walls combined with the gentle gleam of the Jeonjucheon Stream

creates a romantic backdrop for admiring Jeonju's night views.

We admired Pungnammun's exterior, preserved as a traffic island in the center of the roundabout,

and then found a variety of delicious Jeonju foods right ahead at the Jeonju Night Market.

3. Popular Food Tour in Jeollabuk-do

First, let me introduce you to some popular eateries!

First up is 'Jojeomrye Nammun Pisundae,' a Blue Ribbon restaurant so popular that it has a queue stretching late into the night. It's no exaggeration to say it's *the* representative sundae gukbap spot in all of Jeonju!

Its rich *pisundae* (blood sausage) is packed with congealed blood and vegetables, and its spicy yet savory broth, completely free of any gamey smell, is what makes it so incredibly popular.

Then there's 'Hyundaenok,' famous for its *kongnamul gukbap* (bean sprout soup) topped with squid. While it's now a nationwide franchise, easily found in other cities, this particular spot is the original branch – the very birthplace of Hyundaenok! I even have fond memories of visiting it often when I was a child.

And for years now, whenever I visit this place, there's one dish I absolutely *must* wait in line for: *yukjeon*!

While the 'Insaeng Yukjeon' night market stall is popular, too, this is truly the representative *yukjeon* spot in the entire traditional market, so make sure to check it out!

For ~$9, you get one pack (two servings) of warm, savory *yukjeon* — thinly sliced beef coated in egg and gently pan-fried to a golden-brown perfection on a griddle. It's incredibly popular, especially when paired with the refreshing kick of tartly seasoned onions and green onions. You can also enjoy it with traditional *Mojju* (a mild, spiced alcoholic drink), beer, *makgeolli*, or *sikhye*.

As for other night market delights, Gappujip Samgyeopsal Gimbap (Pork Belly Gimbap) was also incredibly popular!

They offered a variety of choices, with the popular Danggeum Samgyeopsal Gimbap (Carrot Pork Belly Gimbap) costing ~$5, and the Danggeun Samgyeopsal Double Gimbap (Double Carrot Pork Belly Gimbap) going for ~$7. You can also grab a refreshing Mojju for just ~$3, making it a perfect pairing!

Yachae Ddungttaeng, a dish said to have originated right here at Jeonju Night Market in 2014, is also a massive hit! For ~$3 (small) or ~$4 (large), you get this unique street food where bean sprouts and a medley of other vegetables are packed tightly inside thin-sliced pork belly and grilled to perfection on a hot griddle. What makes it so fantastic is the abundance of vegetables, keeping it wonderfully crisp and surprisingly non-greasy!

Especially popular with the little ones, the 'Big Sausage' is also a must-try! You can get a handmade sausage for ~$4 or a cheesy version for ~$4. Its satisfying size and delightfully bouncy texture are truly irresistible.

On top of all that, with a continuous stream of various Jeonju delicacies like grilled heart skewers, beef *bulchobap* (flame-seared sushi), and even rolled ice cream, I truly got to experience the bustling, vibrant scene of a night market stroll!

4. Wrapping Up Our Jeonju Adventure in Jeonbuk Province

Our enchanting evening stroll through Jeonju Nambu Market's night market, which began with admiring the subtle moonlight casting its glow over Pungnammun Gate, concluded perfectly as we savored delicious food in the charming, old-world alleys of Jeonju Market.

From the rich *pisundae* that delights seasoned palates to the nostalgic *kongnamul gukbap* that evokes childhood memories, and even the chunky pork belly *gimbap* and sausages that make kids' eyes sparkle — there was truly a delightful variety to choose from, catering to every taste and age!

With tables conveniently set up throughout the arcade-style market, you can easily savor delicious food no matter what the weather brings, making for a truly comfortable experience!

It was also a perfect spot to take a breather.

In the area near Hanok Village, where the charm of both past and present beautifully coexists,

explore the walkable local markets, soak in Jeonju's enchanting night views,

and create cherished memories of delightful evening strolls.
