Onjeom's Interior Atmosphere
The space aims to be a healing sanctuary, a cozy hideaway.
Right from the entrance, you'll find camping chairs where you can feel the gentle breeze from the river.

One of them was mysteriously 'borrowed' by a hiker during my visit, haha!

Jeonju's only pub serving Hyangeo-hoe (carp sashimi)
Closing 2030... Wishing the owner prosperity until at least 2030! ‼️

Though not a huge space,
it features a bar-style counter and four-person tables,
creating a great ambiance for small gatherings.
I started to think about how perfect it would be to enjoy a drink while watching the snow fall outside in winter,
but I'll stop there before I sound like too much of a drinker!

It seems the owner values people greatly,
with a wall and various spots on the refrigerator filled with photos
of the owner, friends, and customers, creating a heartwarming vibe.

After a leisurely look around the well-stocked bar with various whiskies and spirits, I settled into my seat.

Ordering is conveniently done via QR code from your seat.
And the water isn't just plain water, which was a nice touch – it's a special blend to help you sober up!
I captured the menu photos in a video, but here's a rundown:
Brisket Hot Pot
Beef Brisket, Minari, and Mushroom Hot Pot
Nagasaki Jjamppong Soup
~ $19
Hyangeo-hoe (Carp Sashimi)
~ $18
Beef Brisket and Bean Sprout Stir-fry
~ $12
Semi-dried Squid
~ $12
(Such a cute name!)
Onjeom Grilled Pumpkin
Grilled Mentaiko (Pollack Roe)
Spicy Chicken Sausage Risotto
~ $11
Hyangeo Tang (Carp Stew), Doenjang-sulbap (Soybean Paste Soup with Rice)
~ $8
Light Snacks under ~$7:
Grilled Shiitake Mushrooms, Hyangeo-hoe Rice Bowl,
Oi Tangtang-man (Smashed Cucumber Salad),
Kaya Butter Toast,
Hangover Ramen
Plus, there are discounted set menus! 〰️〰️
The prices for appetizers were great, ranging from around ~$18 to under ~$7.
While the Brisket Hot Pot is also a popular item,
what is Onjeom famous for?
Jeonju's only Hyangeo-hoe spot!
As someone from the Gyeongsang-do region (that's me!), carp sashimi is somewhat familiar,
but many in Jeolla-do find the name itself quite new.
So, I knew I absolutely had to try the Hyangeo-hoe.
The solo Hyangeo-hoe + Doenjang-sulbap set for ~$18 is a must-order! ‼️
After enjoying the sashimi, the hearty Doenjang-sulbap makes it a complete meal;
you won't need dinner afterward!
Jeonju Riverside Pub
Onjeom Menu Review

They served a refreshing Yuja-ju (citron liquor) as a welcome drink.
The sweet citrus aroma was delightful,
and it paired perfectly with the complimentary appetizer: Changranjeot (fermented pollock guts) with cream cheese and honey.

It was an unexpectedly delicious combination!
I bet serious drinkers could finish a whole bottle of liquor with just this appetizer!

This is Hyangeo-hoe!
Everyone knows seasonal ingredients are best for you, right?
Well, carp is just entering its prime season!
While typically October through February is ideal, it's late September 2026, so we'll call it October!
Hyangeo, a freshwater fish also known as Israeli carp or German carp,
is directly farmed by the owner himself!
This makes it the only pub in Jeonju where you can enjoy such fresh Hyangeo-hoe.

It was wonderfully chewy and delicious, without any trace of fishiness.
They only sell a limited quantity each day.

The savory carp sashimi,
paired with sweet and sour Gochujang-based sauce, and fresh perilla leaves! ‼️
The perilla leaves aren't store-bought; they're homegrown, so their aroma is much stronger,
making them an even better match for the sashimi. I absolutely adore the sashimi + perilla leaf combination!

Hite Jinro, fighting!

Though I ordered a 'solo' portion,
the Doenjang-sulbap came in a massive earthenware pot, and the sashimi portion was generous too.
It felt more like 1.5 servings, but since I ate it alone, I'll stick to calling it a solo portion!

The owner's conversational style was so comfortable and engaging that the interesting stories never stopped.
We chatted away, and before I knew it, the sun had set, and it was completely dark, even though I had arrived in the middle of the day...
While there are many places for solo drinks in Gaeksa,
in my opinion, Onjeom is the best 'talking bar' and a true culinary gem. ❤️
The chewy Hyangeo-hoe...
I'm sure it will be even firmer and more delicious come October.
I'm already planning my next visit!
The Onjeom Grilled Pumpkin also sounds incredibly appealing,
so next time, I'm planning a feast of Hyangeo-hoe + Grilled Pumpkin + Mentaiko... a true 'Power J' (planner) move!
