Discover Dagayangjojang, a Jeonju gem known for its unlimited complimentary dishes and vibrant makgeolli scene. Navigate weekend waits and feast like a local!
Hello, I'm Bamkki!
After rocking out at the Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival,
I visited a fantastic late-night restaurant in Gaeksa: Dagayangjojang
I kept hearing they offer endless freebies,
and I thought, "Seriously, how much could there be?"
Well, prepare for a 'food assault' – in the best way possible!
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Seriously, they bring out five complimentary dishes! Go there on an empty stomach, trust me! 😉

1. Dagayangjojang's Location & Waiting Game in Jeonju Gaeksa
📍 Dagayangjojang
5 Jeonjugaeaksa 1-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province
Dagayangjojang is located in Jeonju's Gaekridan-gil, a charming alleyway within Gaeksa.
Instead of the main Chunggyeong-ro,
you'll find countless pubs tucked away in these inner streets, which is pretty cool, right!?

Dagayangjojang is just a short walk from the main road.
It might look like there's no queue from the outside,
but don't be fooled! It's a Catch Table waiting system, so people aren't visibly lining up. Just a heads-up! ☆

Even at 9:30 PM,
there were still over 30 teams waiting...?!
Luckily, my accommodation was just a minute's walk away, so I put our name down, headed back to shower and relax, and we finally got in around 11:20-11:30 PM.
For Dagayangjojang on a weekend,
be prepared for a 2-hour wait, at least!!!!
2. Dagayangjojang: Interior Vibes & Must-Try Menu

Dagayangjojang's last order is at 00:30,
and even when I arrived at 11:30 PM,
it was still packed...?!
A few more groups came in right after me, too! Wow!
It's such a popular spot, and since it's a pub, arriving later can actually be a smart move.
*Just make sure you don't overeat at your first stop!

Dagayangjojang's menu is surprisingly simple:
6 main dishes, 4 sides, and then an incredible array of diverse makgeolli and traditional alcoholic beverages.
And for your main, honestly, you should probably just order the Saecham set 🤣
Check out my review below to see just how many complimentary dishes you get 👇
3. Dagayangjojang: Honest Review of Jeonju's Makgeolli Hotspot
Alright, I'll break down my review into three parts:
1. Basic Banchan + What I Actually Ordered
2. Makgeolli Sampler
3. The 5 Complimentary Dishes (...)
Basic Banchan + Saecham (Farm Snack Set)

The basic banchan included a refreshing bean sprout soup,
black beans, and dried radish strips.
The soup had a subtle kick, almost like a pre-emptive hangover cure! 😏

And then, Saecham arrives!
It's served charmingly in a traditional bamboo basket, just like the farm snacks eaten during harvest season! 🤣

The Bo-ssam and Golbaengi Muchim came out first,
while the Buchimgae arrived a little later.
Honestly, it looked pretty ordinary at first glance,
but I don't know how they boiled the Bo-ssam, the meat itself was just incredibly delicious.
And the Golbaengi Muchim also served as a fresh kimchi (Geotjeori),
so wrapping them both up together in a ssam was just perfect..♡
They were outstanding anju (drinking snacks) for makgeolli 😋

The Buchimgae, cooked fresh on the spot, came out a bit later.
It was almost as thick as a vegetable tempura (Yachae Twigim),
but they drained the oil so well that it was wonderfully crispy.
So, it felt more like a 'Jeon' (savory pancake) than a typical Buchimgae!
Just like the Bo-ssam, it was another fantastic makgeolli anju 🤭
Makgeolli Sampler

To taste a variety of makgeolli, we ordered the
3-type Makgeolli Sampler.
We were served Song Myeong-seop, Haechang 6-do, and Sindong makgeolli.
The staff explained each one personally,
and poured us a glass of each.

I took this picture to help me remember them easily:
Song Myeong-seop Makgeolli - I'd never tasted a makgeolli with such a clean finish, leaving no heavy aftertaste.
Haechang 6-do - It was in the middle, so my memory is a bit hazy...
It had the most acidity among the three.
Sindong Makgeolli - Clean and sweet, with a surprisingly distinct banana aroma, even though it doesn't contain bananas ㅋㅋㅋ
My husband absolutely raved about the Song Myeong-seop,
saying we had to buy several bottles to take home 🤣🤣

The additional bottle we ordered was Poongnammun Makgeolli.
The staff even recommended trying only the clear part,
and since we were already quite full, that's what we did ㅋㅋ
It was a moderately pleasant makgeolli,
and drinking just the clear part made it feel light and easy!
Five Service Dishes: Almost a Food Overload!

The service started pleasantly enough
with a handful of Dagagap (Daga Rice).
The menu description said it was 'rice that went to Southeast Asia',
and it really had that savory, Southeast Asian flavor!

The second service dish was seaweed soup (Miyeokguk), which was a safe choice.
It came out piping hot,
and was perfect for warming us up from the inside.
After eagerly drinking makgeolli, having a warm soup at that moment
was absolutely perfect timing! 😘

For the third service dish, there was literally no space left on our table (..)
They brought out stir-fried chicken gizzards (Dakttongjip Bokkeum),
and I had actually just seen the table next to us eating it,
so even though I was full, I exclaimed 'Oh!!' and started eating.
It was savory~ and, as expected, a fantastic anju.

I'm telling you, there's truly no space left anymore ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
After the gizzards, I was still okay, but then...
What?! Another service dish...?!
That's when the real panic set in ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
They bring out these service dishes with a bit of a delay between them,
and just generously serve them to all the tables.

And it was even Sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup) with a very generous amount of ingredients!
The broth was rich and hearty, with a slight kick to it.
The sujebi was perfectly cooked too,
you know that feeling when you're full but it's still so delicious,,,,,,,?
And that's when Bamkki and her husband tried to make their escape.
My husband and I thought, 'Oh no, we can't eat anymore!'
👀What if Dagajoyang gives us *another* service dish?👀
We tried to sneakily pay our bill and stood up, but then...
"The ramyeon is all cooked, please have some before you go!"
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

The generosity in Jeollado is truly something else!
The thing is... we were already stuffed to the brim,
and yet, this ramen was easily one of my TOP 3 ramens of all time!
How do they make it so incredibly delicious?!
Seriously, perfectly cooked ramen like this...
my husband and I couldn't believe it – we'd never had anything like it!

They even gave us complimentary yogurt when we paid the bill!
Haha!
And on our way out, we even touched the lucky turtle that's said to bring good fortune!
Anyway, with service this incredible,
if you're a party of two, just order the 'Saecham' set...
and if possible, gather a group of 4 or more, haha!
We were honestly sad we couldn't finish all the amazing food they served,
so Bamkki's crew is definitely going back! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That concludes our review of Daga Brewery, a must-visit Makgeolli spot in Jeonju!
