Step into a fairytale at the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Night. Enjoy beautiful illuminated shrines, traditional music, and hands-on cultural activities.

Looking to make unforgettable memories with your family in South Korea? The Jeonju Cultural Heritage Night is the perfect autumn escape.
This incredible cultural festival is held twice a year, but the autumn rendition is particularly special thanks to the cool, crisp evening breeze.
We made sure not to miss this year's festivities and had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the illuminated historic streets.
For parking, we highly recommend using the public parking lots or the Korea Traditional Culture Center, which offers free parking on weekends.

Capturing the magic of the night doesn't require a secret formula—just a bit of patience and the right gear!
A sturdy tripod or a fast prime lens will make all the difference in low-light settings.
If you're looking for gear recommendations, the Sony SEL50F12GM lens is an absolute dream for night photography.
For these shots, I used my trusted Sony A7R V paired with the SEL50F14GM lens.

Opportunities to photograph the historic Gyeonggijeon Shrine at night are rare.
If you are visiting during the festival, seeing the shrine illuminated under the stars is a must.
With live traditional performances echoing through the courtyards, it's a feast for both the eyes and ears.
We met an incredibly talented daegeum (traditional bamboo flute) player.
Despite performing since 10:00 AM, his energy was absolutely infectious.
He played a beautiful, diverse repertoire ranging from children's songs to classical masterpieces.

The fusion of classical Western music and traditional Korean court music was a highlight.
It was an absolute treat for anyone who appreciates live music.
With the perfect autumn weather, it was the ultimate evening out for locals and travelers alike!

Visitors can hear unique traditional instruments like the sogeum, gayageum, and ajaeng.
It’s a fantastic educational experience for children to see these rare instruments played live.
Opportunities to experience traditional culture this closely are truly precious.

There was also a hands-on matcha tea ceremony experience available.
Tea masters dressed in elegant Hanbok prepared the fresh green tea on the spot.
Sipping the warm, frothy matcha on a cool evening felt incredibly peaceful.

During our session, the instructor even wrote my child's name on the cup.
While kids might find the matcha a bit bitter, the personalized experience made it a huge hit!

Feeling the warmth of the freshly poured tea in your hands is the perfect way to embrace the autumn night.
It’s a lovely contrast to the brisk evening air.

The absolute highlight of the festival activities was the traditional Jeolpyeon making.
Jeolpyeon is a beautiful, patterned Korean rice cake.
It is a rare and engaging craft that children absolutely love learning.

The instructor explained the deep cultural meanings behind the wooden mold patterns.
The grid pattern is believed to ward off negative energy and evil spirits.
Meanwhile, the floral patterns symbolize rejuvenation, health, and a long life.

You get to roll the soft rice dough into perfect round shapes with your hands.
Then, you carefully press the wooden stamps to imprint the beautiful designs.
Each participant receives two pieces of rice cake (one white, one green).
If you go as a pair, you'll walk away with four delicious, handmade treats to share.
The experience is limited to the first 500 participants on day one, and up to 1,200 on day two, so be sure to sign up early!

Watching small hands carefully press down on the traditional molds is incredibly heartwarming.
My child loved this workshop so much last year that we had to come back again.
The Hansik Creative Center did a fantastic job organizing these cultural programs.

Once you wrap up your custom creations with the decorative paper bands, you are all set!
The entire experience takes about 10 minutes.
It’s a simple activity, but learning the history of the patterns makes it deeply meaningful.
Taking home delicious rice cakes filled with wishes of good health is the perfect souvenir.

With its rich array of interactive workshops and live performances,
the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Night is truly a premier autumn festival.
It is highly recommended for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for an authentic cultural experience.

The Jeolpyeon making experience is limited to the first 500 people on the first day and up to 1,200 people on the second day. It takes about 10 minutes to shape and package the rice cakes yourself.
The lattice pattern signifies warding off evil spirits. The instructor will personally explain that the flower pattern symbolizes rejuvenation and good health.
Gyeonggijeon Shrine is highly recommended for photography as you can capture its night view, which is usually difficult to photograph. Since the environment is dark, it is advisable to bring a tripod or use a very fast (bright) lens.
