Jeongdok Library Bukchon Seoul 2026: Hidden Gem & History
Discover Jeongdok Library in Seoul's Bukchon, a historic gem known for its beautiful architecture and hidden cherry blossom garden. Explore its serene interior and rich cultural exhibits.

Jeongdok Library, nestled in Seoul's charming Bukchon area,
is proudly operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education,
and it's truly a library steeped in history.
Not only is the building itself absolutely beautiful,
but the garden right in front of the library
is also incredibly well-maintained and charming,
making it renowned as a hidden gem for cherry blossoms in Seoul.

I recently visited Jeongdok Library myself to soak in the cherry blossom beauty,
and while I was there, I took the opportunity to explore its interior thoroughly,
for the first time in a while.

Right by the entrance, you'll discover
a quaint Bukchon Exhibition Hall,

You'll also find the Seoul Education Museum here,
which is currently hosting a special exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of Gwangbokjeol (National Liberation Day).

Right by the entrance, you can discover the historical site of Kim Ok-gyun's house.
Kim Ok-gyun, a prominent figure of the Gaehwa-pa (Enlightenment Faction),
is renowned for initiating the Gapsin Coup at the close of the Joseon Dynasty.
To think that discussions about the Gapsin Coup itself
took place right on this very spot! How incredible!

Jeongdok Library definitely has the look and feel of a school.
and it turns out there's a good reason for that: it was once the campus of the renowned
Gyeonggi High School!
In 1977, when Gyeonggi High School relocated to Gangnam,
the building was actually slated for demolition.
However, it was brilliantly repurposed and remodeled into a public library for the citizens of Seoul, a true testament to preserving history and knowledge!

The library's operating hours
can vary slightly depending on the specific facility you plan to visit.
What's more, there are different hours for weekdays and weekends,
so I highly recommend checking their schedule carefully before you head out!

Once you step inside Building 1, which serves as the main entrance,
you'll find the Children's Materials Room on your left,
and the Youth Hall beginning on your right.

If you're only able to explore one area at Jeongdok Library,
I would absolutely recommend making a beeline for the Nobel Literature Lounge!
It's a truly special place, being the first public library
to curate and collect works from all the past Nobel Literature Laureates.

You can access this literary haven by heading up the stairs and crossing over to Building 2.

Nobel Literature Lounge

Overall,
Jeongdok Library definitely shows
the passage of time,
but the Nobel Literature Lounge
really caught my eye because
it's a relatively recent addition.

The interior was clean and
the books were well-displayed,
making it a great place to leisurely
browse through works by Nobel Literature laureates.

I even looked for books by Nobel Literature Prize winners
that I had already read!

Just a heads-up,
books in the Nobel Literature Lounge are for
on-site reading only;
you can borrow books from other sections of the library.

Besides that,
there were unique activities you could only do here,
such as creating your own transcription book and quiz cards.

I also explored the general library shelves,
neatly organized by theme.

A familiar library scene.

However, the window seats
tucked away in a corner of the shelves were absolutely wonderful.

In early April, Jeongdok Library is truly breathtaking with cherry blossoms in full bloom!
Jeongdok Library Cafeteria and Convenience Store

Jeongdok Library is made up of three buildings,
so its layout can be a bit complex.
You'll find the Jeongdok Library cafeteria and snack bar
near the passage connecting Building 1 to Building 2.

The convenience store offered
simple snacks and drinks.

Jeongdok Public Library's cafeteria
is named Sodamjeong,
and it operates daily
from 9 AM to 7:30 PM.
(Last order at 7:10 PM)
However, the cafeteria is closed
on library holidays:
the first and third Wednesdays of every month,
and national holidays.

The origin of each ingredient was clearly marked,
and the menu was surprisingly diverse.

You can order dishes like
Kimchi Jjigae, Jeyuk Deopbap (spicy pork stir-fry over rice), Donkatsu (pork cutlet), and more,
or even the Baekban, a daily changing set meal
with various side dishes.
A weekly menu for the Baekban
is available, so you can check the dishes
in advance.
The Baekban costs ~$5!
What a great price, right?

Ordering is simple via the kiosk.
Jeongdok Public Library Reading Rooms

Next, if you head over to Building 3,
you'll find the reading rooms.

They are divided into
a laptop reading room and
a self-study room.

The reading rooms have a total of 644 seats,
and you can use them after registering your seat
at a kiosk.

Wandering between the buildings,
I was delighted by the cherry blossoms in full bloom everywhere.
It was a pleasant experience just to walk around
