A Must-Visit Spot in Hangyeong, Jeju
An Independent Bookstore in Western Jeju
When you travel to Jeju often,
you'll find there are certain places
you just have to return to.
Sorisomun Bookstore is one such place for me.
It's a special spot on Jeju Island
where you can truly soak in a quiet and soulful atmosphere.
A few years ago, when I visited Jeju alone,
it was my first time discovering this place.
Hearing that the bookstore had moved locations,
I sought out Sorisomun's new spot
on this current trip.
This time, I wasn't alone;
I was with my book-loving mom and sister,
and we stayed for a long time, soaking in a wonderfully different vibe than before.

Why I Recommend It as a Must-Visit in Hangyeong, Jeju
is a small independent bookstore
located in Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju, and it boasts
a unique charm unlike any large chain bookstore.
Compared to other areas of Jeju,
Hangyeong-myeon is a hidden gem not often frequented by tourists.

Instead of being a flashy space in a famous tourist area,
it boasts a wonderfully quiet atmosphere,
making it a perfect destination for those
who prefer a relaxed, soulful journey.
Especially for those who prefer spaces where they can linger slowly
rather than crowded places,
and for solo travelers seeking quiet contemplation,
it's an excellent independent bookstore in Jeju to choose instead of a cafe.

Sorisomun, an independent bookstore in western Jeju,
also has the incredible distinction of being selected for the list,
‘150 Bookstores Around the World to Visit Before You Die’!
Alongside world-renowned bookstores like 'Shakespeare and Company' in France,
'The Elliott Bay Book Company' in the U.S.,
and 'Livraria Lello' in Portugal,
this place was proudly featured.

Perhaps that's why every single part of the space
feels even more meaningful,
and I confidently want to recommend it as a place
that is truly worth a special visit!
While it's not a large bookstore,
I truly felt that the passion for books and the thoughtful care put into every corner of the space
are what make this bookstore so incredibly special.

From the very exterior of the bookstore, you can already sense
Sorisomun's unique Jeju sensibility,
and I absolutely adore this atmosphere.
Even the previous Sorisomun location
had exactly this kind of feeling,
and it seems they've successfully brought that unique charm over,
which personally made me incredibly happy and pleased.

As soon as you step inside the bookstore, a cozy feeling washes over you~
Under the warm lighting, you'll instantly feel like settling down with a good book,
making it a place where once you enter,
it's hard to leave! Haha
Recommended Solo Travel Course in Jeju: <Bookstore Sorisomun>

I first visited this place five years ago, during the pandemic,
as part of a solo trip to Jeju to celebrate leaving my job.
The moments I spent leisurely choosing books by myself were
truly blissful.
If you're curious about the space before it moved to this location,
you can check it out in the post below!

This time, I visited with my family,
and perhaps because we're all book lovers,
even as we each picked out different books,
simply being in the same space felt natural and comforting.
That's why this place is
perfect for a relaxing break during solo travels,
and also wonderfully suited for visiting with book-loving family, friends, or partners.
It's truly a charming Jeju bookstore.

Independent bookstores may not be huge in size,
but each and every book is carefully chosen, reflecting the owner's personal taste
and distinct curatorial vision.
I believe this creates a special charm that you just can't find
in larger chain bookstores.
Here at Sorisomun Bookstore, too,
instead of the usual bestsellers you see everywhere these days,
my eyes were drawn to books that felt like they were meant to be savored for a long time.

As you read the small notes and recommendation phrases tucked between books,
or the literary snippets written throughout the bookstore,
you naturally get a sense of, 'Ah, this bookstore truly loves these kinds of stories.'
That's why I think people who seek out independent bookstores in Jeju
aren't just coming to buy books;
they're coming to experience the atmosphere and curation of the space itself.

At Sorisomun Bookstore, there's a unique section that's hard to pass by:
the 'Blind Book' corner.
Instead of seeing the cover, you pick a book by imagining its contents based solely on a few keywords
written on its wrapping paper. Since you're choosing without knowing the title or the author,
it adds a subtle thrill and a lot of fun to the selection process!
When I first came here a while ago,
these Blind Books left such an impression on me that
I bought three as gifts for my book-loving friends.
All three recipients of the gifts,
said the books were exactly what they needed,
and they loved them so much that it made me incredibly proud! ♡

It's a charming little detail unique to Sorisomun,
a special touch reminiscent of Jeju's independent bookstores.
So this time again, after standing in front of it for a while,
I ended up picking up another book as a gift for my friend. Haha!

In a quiet corner of the bookstore,
there's a beautifully atmospheric space
where you can quietly sit and contribute to the transcription notebook.
It's a wonderful system where you leave your own sentences,
following the words written by the person before you.
If you make sure to note the line number of the last page you wrote on,
it makes it super easy for the next person to continue the flow.

My mom and I each tried our hand at transcribing a passage.
There's also a guestbook,
so we each left a short message there too.
It's the kind of space where you might just drop in to browse books,
but then you naturally find yourself sitting down to write,
and truly lose track of time as you linger there.

Another truly impressive feature here was
the special corner where you can listen to poems
recited by the bookstore keepers through headphones!
While it's certainly a space for reading books,
the opportunity to experience literature through 'sound'
is truly what makes this place uniquely captivating!

Having traveled to Jeju Island frequently,
I've come to realize that quiet, relaxed spaces where I can truly linger
are far more memorable than the bustling, famous tourist attractions.
Sorisomun Bookstore was absolutely wonderful,
perfect for a solo travel itinerary, or even for a visit with family who cherish books.
If you're searching for worthwhile spots in Jeju's Hangyeong area,
I highly recommend swapping out a cafe for an independent Jeju bookstore like this one
to add a unique charm to your travel plans!
If you enjoyed this independent bookstore on Jeju's west side,
you'll definitely want to also explore <Manchun Bookstore>,
a fantastic independent bookstore on Jeju's east side, perfect for a peaceful escape.
Even though they're both on Jeju, their atmospheres are quite different.
