When searching for spas or saunas in Jeju, most options tend to be large public bathhouses (jjimjilbangs). While fun, they didn't quite fit my desire for a quiet, deeply relaxing, and intimate experience.

That is how I discovered a hidden gem: a private Finnish-style sauna right on the coast. Today, I am excited to share my honest review of Jeju Onshim.

To be completely honest, I have never been a huge fan of dry saunas.

I usually find it hard to breathe in hot, enclosed spaces, so I rarely seek them out. However, during a family gathering, my niece and nephew raved about a Finnish-style ocean-view sauna they visited on Jeju Island, insisting that Jeju Onshim was an absolute must-visit.

Jeju Onshim offers two types of private rooms: the Pyeong-sang Room (featuring a traditional flat wooden platform) and the Chair Room.

The Pyeong-sang rooms share an outdoor balcony area for cooling off, whereas the Chair rooms offer a completely private balcony. Because I wanted absolute privacy and quiet, I booked the Chair Room.

Upon arrival, we headed to the first-floor changing room to change into the provided sauna wear. They also provide complimentary felt sauna hats and headbands.

I highly recommend wearing the sauna hat! It makes a massive difference by protecting your scalp and hair from the intense heat, allowing you to relax comfortably for much longer.

The changing rooms are equipped with clean private showers, making it incredibly convenient to freshen up after your session.

Heading up to the second floor, we were greeted with a warm cup of welcome tea. As we sipped our tea and settled in, the host kindly explained how to use the Finnish sauna and shared safety guidelines.

I was initially a bit nervous about the heat, but once inside, the space felt surprisingly airy and comfortable!

At the center of the private sauna sits a beautiful wood-burning stove. We got to experience the traditional Finnish löyly ritual firsthand—slowly ladling water over the hot stones to generate pockets of soothing steam. We started off cautiously with just one scoop, but soon we were happily pouring two to three scoops to get the perfect humidity going!

The warm steam gently enveloped us, and unlike traditional dry saunas, the air remained remarkably fresh and easy to breathe.

The highlight, without a doubt, was the breathtaking view of the Jocheon sea through the massive floor-to-ceiling window.

Sitting quietly in the warmth while watching the gentle waves roll in made time stand still. It was more than just a physical detox; it was a deeply meditative experience for both body and mind.

When our bodies warmed up completely, we stepped out onto the private balcony to enjoy the cool, refreshing Jeju sea breeze.

The contrast between the deep, cozy heat of the sauna and the crisp ocean air felt absolutely incredible and left us feeling entirely rejuvenated.

My husband and I spent our two hours cycling between the hot sauna room and the outdoor balcony. We sweated so much that our sauna clothes were completely drenched, but we felt lighter than ever.

The Highlights

When you begin your sauna session, the host places foil-wrapped sweet potatoes directly into the wood-burning stove.

By the time you finish sweating and step out, they are perfectly roasted, hot, and incredibly sweet. It is a simple gesture, but it tasted like absolute heaven.

The small snack bar on-site also sells classic Korean sauna treats like baked eggs and cup ramen, which are perfect for satisfying that post-sauna hunger.

A Few Honest Caveats

While the Chair Room offers total balcony privacy, the fabric material of the chairs was a minor downside.

Sitting on fabric while drenched in sweat felt a bit damp and uncomfortable after a while. Looking over, the guests in the Pyeong-sang Room looked incredibly comfortable lounging on their spacious, flat wooden platform.

If I visit again, I will definitely book the Pyeong-sang Room.

Also, keep in mind that "private sauna" means your individual sauna room is private, not the entire building. You might occasionally cross paths with other guests in the shared hallways, but your actual relaxation space remains entirely your own.

After finishing up at the sauna, you can easily explore the charming neighborhood of Jocheon on foot without needing to move your car.

Okran Myeonok

Nothing beats a bowl of refreshing, icy Hwanghae-style cold buckwheat noodles after a hot sauna! Pairing the cold noodles with their tender boiled pork slices (suyuk) is the ultimate culinary reward.

Muusu Coffee Roasters

A lovely local cafe serving exceptional, house-roasted specialty coffee. It is the perfect spot to sit back, read, and keep the relaxed post-sauna vibe going.

Peace Unification Bulasari Pagoda

An impressive, architecturally unique temple located nearby. It is a peaceful, scenic spot to take a light stroll and snap some beautiful photos.

Since all of these spots are within easy walking distance, they make a perfect half-day itinerary combined with your visit to Jeju Onshim.
