My family and I took a wonderful trip to Jeju Island for my birthday, and to celebrate, we decided a simple slice of cake with candles would be perfect. That led us to Jeju Jeil Seongsimdang, a charming bakery located conveniently near our accommodation.
Not only were their pastries delicious, but it was also a delightful surprise to find a bakery offering so many samples—a rare sight these days! I'm excited to share my experience and tell you all about their delectable treats.

Jeju Jeil Seongsimdang Bakery

Jeil Seongsimdang is situated just a 6-minute drive from the iconic Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak! It's actually located directly across from Boryeong Bakery, which was also introduced on the popular Korean TV show 'I Live Alone' as one of Yuri from Girls' Generation's favorite spots.
While I didn't make it to Boryeong Bakery that day, I distinctly remember passing it and thinking, "Oh, there's another bakery right across the street!" as I left Jeil Seongsimdang.

Indeed, Jeil Seongsimdang was the second bakery Yuri visited on 'I Live Alone,' solidifying its reputation as a must-visit spot.
Parking & Samples at Jeil Seongsimdang

Jeju Seongsimdang's mint-colored sign really stands out. If you're driving, like I was, you'll need to either park briefly on the shoulder or find a nearby parking lot.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend shoulder parking. Why? Because once you step inside Jeil Seongsimdang, it's surprisingly hard to leave quickly!

There's an incredible array of delicious-looking breads, and just like a beloved old-school neighborhood bakery, they offer generous samples. It's easy to lose track of time in here!
My dad and husband waited in the car, and apparently, my sister and I took so long inside that they ended up driving around the block several times!

While the shop isn't huge, they boast a wide variety of breads, and it seems almost every item is available for sampling. Personally, I highly recommend the Cream Cheese Garlic Hard Roll and the Cinnamon Bread!
If you're a fan of cinnamon like me, you'll absolutely adore their Cinnamon Bread – it has that perfect, rich cinnamon aroma. And the Cream Cheese Hard Roll is wonderfully rustic and savory, the kind of bread you could snack on all day without getting tired of it.

I usually have to be careful with gluten, so I tend to be cautious even when samples are available. But at Jeil Seongsimdang, I honestly lost all self-control!
What's even better is that the prices are slightly more affordable than most chain bakeries, and the portions feel about 1.5 times larger.
Jeil Seongsimdang Cake Review
My top recommendation: Carrot Cake

However, what I truly want to recommend even more than the bread are their slice cakes! Among them, the carrot cake was absolutely delicious. It's a generous slice, a bit larger than typical individual cakes, and at just ~$4, it offers fantastic value.

Carrot cake is one of the few desserts I actively seek out, and Jeil Seongsimdang's version is quite impressive. Often, carrot cakes can be overly dense and sweet, making them feel heavy. But this one struck the perfect balance – just the right amount of sweetness and a delightful hint of fresh carrot flavor.

Additionally, they offer adorable tiramisu! Topped with cute tangerine and Dolhareubang (Jeju's iconic stone statues), it's perfect for getting into the island spirit. While not exceptionally gourmet, it was definitely above average.

They even had whole cakes decorated with Dolhareubang, so if you're traveling around Seongsan and need a cake for a special occasion, Jeil Seongsimdang, unique to Jeju, is definitely worth a visit.
I'm so grateful that Jeju Jeil Seongsimdang continues to offer such generous hospitality. Even though I was just visiting, I would frequent this bakery if I lived nearby. The owner is incredibly friendly, and the variety of breads and cakes is truly impressive.
I especially recommend their carrot cake, so if you've booked accommodation in the vicinity, make sure to grab a slice for dessert!
