Ongpo Hoejip Jeju Review 2026: Thick Mackerel & Shrimp Sashimi

Since August, I've been on a fantastic adventure, starting my three-month stay on Jeju Island,

and one of my little bucket list items was to

grab some fresh sashimi for takeout and enjoy it at my leisure!

After a Tuesday packed with classes from morning till evening, I was pretty exhausted, so I quickly headed to

Ongpo Hoejip, a must-visit sashimi spot in Hyeopjae, Jeju.

I'd been craving it since Monday, but due to a prior engagement,

I had to postpone it. But I finally made it, and let me tell you, from the generously thick slices of sashimi

to the plump red-banded lobsters, it was beyond my expectations!

I was completely smitten!

Ongpo Hoejip in Hallim, Hyeopjae is the main branch, which made me even more excited. The mackerel sashimi and red-banded lobster sashimi looked absolutely stunning!

What's more, it's just a 5-minute drive from Hyeopjae Beach,

making it perfect for grabbing takeout and enjoying back at your accommodation!

1. Ongpo Hoejip, Tucked Away Behind the Building

The store was incredibly neat and clean, and as soon as I walked in,

the staff greeted me so kindly~!

The owner's sense of humor was particularly top-notch!

He greeted me with a cheerful: "We've been waiting for you!"

2. Menu Options

This place specializes in mackerel sashimi, red-banded lobster sashimi, and seasonal sashimi.

They cater to solo diners, offer à la carte and set menus,

and are perfectly optimized for both takeout and dining in!

I called ahead to place my order, and everything was ready for immediate pickup when I arrived!

I chose to take it back to my accommodation and enjoy it comfortably!

When I'm looking for a specialized sashimi takeout spot in Hallim or Hyeopjae, I always pay close attention to the side dish (skidashi) composition,

and this place definitely hit the mark.

3. What's Inside the 2-Person Takeout Set

As soon as I saw the Flounder, Mackerel Sashimi, and Prawn 2-Person Takeout Set,

my jaw dropped!

Usually when you get sashimi for takeout, they often only give you a few pieces of main sashimi and basic dipping sauces, but Ongpo Hoejip's set menu is incredibly generous!

Coming to Jeju, I was truly amazed to be able to comfortably enjoy a perfect Hyupjae mackerel sashimi feast right in our accommodation.

From perfectly golden-fried 'yeol-yeo-eo' tempura to savory maki, crispy sweet potato tempura, sushi rice, wasabi, fresh seaweed (gim), and even a special onion sauce, everything is packed in as standard inclusions.

4. ZERO Fishy Smell!

Thick Slices and the Satisfying Crunch of Prawns

As those who love sashimi know, thinly sliced sashimi that's prepared without care lacks texture and quickly leaves you wanting more, right?

But at Ongpo Hoejip, the sashimi slices are truly thick!

Mackerel Sashimi & Flounder Sashimi

There's none of that distinctive fishy smell often associated with mackerel sashimi.

As expected from fresh Hyupjae mackerel sashimi, the more you chew, the richer and chewier the texture becomes, filling your mouth with flavor.

Prawns (Ttaksaeu)

They're plump and sizable. Take one bite and its unique chewy, satisfyingly crunchy texture and sweet umami flavor explode!

This was the second time I'd ordered sashimi for takeout since coming to Jeju,

and the satisfaction was so high that I felt I'd found a truly authentic

Hyupjae's best sashimi takeout spot.

'The Perfect Pairing for Delicious Sashimi'

- Take the crispy seaweed (gim) provided,

and place a suitable amount of sushi rice on top.

- Add a thick slice of Hyupjae mackerel sashimi (or flounder sashimi)

on top.

- Then, generously spoon on the crunchy, sweet-and-sour special onion sauce, developed in-house, and pop it all in your mouth for the perfect bite!

The special onion sauce completely cuts through any potential richness of the sashimi, while maximizing its savory notes, so you'll keep reaching for more without getting tired. The trio of seaweed (gim), sushi rice, and special sauce provided by Ongpo Hoejip was absolutely perfect.

Prawns (Ttaksaeu), I love them!! Their color is amazing, and they're so thick and plump!

These are fail-safe prawn sizes, I highly recommend this place!

6. After Your Sashimi Takeout, Enjoy the Ongpo Coastal Drive Course

Just a short walk out from Ongpo Hoejip, you'll find the wonderfully expansive Hyeopjae and Hallim seas!

After successfully grabbing our sashimi takeout from Hallim,

on our way back to the accommodation,

we took a moment to stroll along the coastline

and soak in the breathtaking ocean views!!

Honestly, if I had to pick just one tiny thing that was a bit of a shame (and I really have to stretch to find one!),

it's that while the takeout was incredibly fresh, I couldn't help but think how amazing it would have been to eat it right there in the restaurant! The restaurant itself was so clean and inviting, that next time, I'd definitely want to enjoy the fresh, perfectly sliced Hyeopjae mackerel sashimi *in* the restaurant, soaking up the ambiance, instead of just taking it to go?!!

Overall, I'd give it a huge thumbs-up – highly, highly recommended!
