On Day 2 of our Jeju Island adventure, we found a hidden gem for dinner: Seoseobang Charcoal Grilled Dakgalbi. This local favorite near Gloucester Hotel and Jeju Airport is a must-try!

You absolutely *must* order the Mojaban Makguksu (Seaweed Buckwheat Noodles)!
I debated whether to post this as a standalone restaurant review or simply weave it into my travelogue.
Since it's Jeju, the travelogue it is!
Dinner was on our own, so we returned to the hotel and started our culinary quest! 😂
My husband is a master at finding great spots!
Among the many recommended dishes, we decided on Dakgalbi (Spicy Stir-fried Chicken) since even the kids love it.
It was a bit of a walk, but we enjoyed exploring the streets along the way – it was quite fun!
And just like that, we arrived!

Please park in the nearby public parking lot.
(It's a commercial area, so we couldn't easily spot any parking directly at the building.)
Exterior
As we headed inside through the entrance,
we overheard someone saying, 'This is mostly where people from the mainland come.'
Other customers were chatting about it.
(Were they talking loudly for our benefit? A little bit like a friendly tout? 😉)

Still, in this day and age,
winning solely on taste can be incredibly competitive,
and promotion is undeniably a crucial element in business.
So, we decided to give it a try!
After all, if a place is busy, it must be doing something right..
(And turns out, that Mojaban Makguksu *was* delicious! 😉)
It seems many celebrities have visited too!
Photos and autographs filled one entire wall.

Interior
They even had a 'Nostalgic Gacha' or 'Lucky Draw' event going on!
I really wanted to try it too, but I felt a bit too shy.
I just couldn't quite muster the courage! 😅
If only I'd done it with the kids....
I could've gotten a discount! 😭
You've got nothing to lose, so...
Definitely give it a try!

There's a separate self-service bar,
so you can help yourself to more side dishes and sauces if you need them.

Menu
Mojaban (Sargassum seaweed) is a type of seaweed known to be rich in calcium!

Menu Board

Here's what we ordered:
Mojaban-Marinated Dakgalbi (Spicy Stir-fried Chicken) (3 servings) ~$33
Steamed Rice ~$1
Black Pork Mojaban Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi Stew) ~$6
Hallasan Soju (21% ABV) ~$3
Mirinda Orange Soda ~$1
+
Mojaban Makguksu (Seaweed Buckwheat Noodles) ~$6

There weren't many side dishes (banchan), but
when you order the Dakgalbi, Doenjang-jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew) comes with it.

The Doenjang-jjigae was a bit... underwhelming....
(Did they put Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew) in it? Or maybe sea trumpet again?
Anyway, it just wasn't great..)
And the Black Pork Kimchi-jjigae (kimchi stew) wasn't great either....
(It had the sourness of kimchi,
but there was something subtly 'funny' about the taste, haha.)
Maybe it's just me, coming from the mainland;
well, everyone has different tastes, right? 😉
The Sauces
I loved that there was a great variety of sauces to dip the Dakgalbi in!
That orange sauce, like a habanero sauce mixed with mayonnaise,
was really delicious (on the left).
The spicy 'fire flavor' sauce was also tasty.
(It tasted similar to Goobne Volcano Sauce).
Oh? It seems I didn't take a picture of the spicy 'fire flavor' sauce, sob! ㅠㅠㅠ)
When I tried the sea trumpet (on the right),
it reminded me of the delicious wakame seaweed with wasabi that I had at Yuksiri Seoknam-jeom a while back.

Sea Trumpet Aged Seasoned Dakgalbi
Hmm... they say it's aged with sea trumpet, so I guess it is,
but it tasted pretty much like regular seasoned Dakgalbi to me.
It wasn't overly spicy or intense,
and it was perfectly enjoyable when eaten with the sauces.
The spice level was mild enough for even elementary and preschool children to enjoy.

The Dakgalbi pan was excellent.
Once everything is cooked, you can move it to the edges,
and they say it stays warm for longer there.
The staff were also very kind.

Personally,
all the sauces were good,
but the chive salad (buchu-muchim) was incredibly fresh and perfectly seasoned,
so I ate a lot of my Dakgalbi with it.

Sea Trumpet Makguksu (Buckwheat Noodles)
My husband asked me, 'Want to try the Makguksu?'
and I said, 'I'm fine for today.'
I just thought it would be regular Makguksu...
But I felt a little regretful, so we ended up ordering Makguksu as an extra.
My husband mentioned that the Makguksu here had really good reviews.
(Why didn't you tell me something so important earlier?!
What would I have done if we hadn't ordered it, I would have been so disappointed! 😢)
I'm emphasizing this in case anyone else misses out like I almost did!
The Dakgalbi was delicious, but
for all you noodle lovers out there, you absolutely MUST try the Sea Trumpet Makguksu!
There was a reason for all the great reviews! 😭
It was perfectly seasoned and truly delicious.
The bowl isn't too big, so it feels like a perfect dessert or light finish.

I added more of the refreshing broth and ate it.
It was truly delicious!
Slurp, slurp!
I poured in more of that cool, refreshing broth,
and the soup became wonderfully rich and thick.
The noodles, perhaps not super high in buckwheat content,
weren't the kind that break easily.
Instead, they were delightfully chewy!
Anyway, the seasoning was just right, so it was delicious!

And just like that, we wrapped up our fantastic Dakgalbi feast here!!

Then, we headed to Sulbing, a place we'd spotted earlier on our walk,
to indulge in some refreshing bingsu for dessert!!!
My husband really wanted to head back to the hotel,
but you know how it is – us ladies always have a separate stomach for dessert, right?
With the kids' faces full of excited anticipation,
he had no choice but to follow along, haha!

Sulbing, it's been a while, haha!
The prices have been steadily climbing, making it less value for money,
so I haven't been going as often lately.
But since we were traveling and didn't know other places nearby, we just decided to go in.

The interior did have a bit of a cluttered feel.
The kids loved it though,
but a Christmas tree still up?..... haha.
It seems they don't really focus on maintaining the store's ambiance.

There was a separate, somewhat secret-looking partitioned area here,
which had group seating.
With red tablecloths,
at first, it felt like a place where you'd get your tarot read (oops, sorry!).
Seeing all the rattan-like materials used,
it seems they were going for a Southeast Asian vibe, perhaps?

It had a duplex structure, so after climbing two or three steps,
you'd find this cool-looking interior.
Overall, the store was quite dark.

There was a prime window seat available,
with the window wide open, letting in a refreshing breeze.
So we snagged a spot in the corner by the window.
The giant light fixture hanging low was quite interesting!

Here's what we ordered:
Chocolate Brownie Sulbing: ~$8
Hmm... with brownies and chocolate syrup, it was definitely sweet.
Since it's brownie bingsu, I'd say the toppings were acceptable,
but the milk shaved ice itself was just... like something you'd make at home.
It reminded me of the taste from Bao Bingsu in Songdo, haha.
Both the portion size,
and the unique, delicious texture of the 'snow flower' shaved ice,
made me realize Bao Bingsu was truly a great place...
Bao Bingsu, which even gave us ice cream,
was definitely a place with good value for money...
This trip reminded me of that.
(I always realize things a little late!)

But still,
maybe it was the travel destination vibe,
but we were playing around with the kids and taking photos,
and looking at pictures where my butt looked super chunky,
we burst into fits of laughter!
Watching the kids light up with happiness during our special time together,
our hearts were filled with so much joy too.

And then...
because we had to eat breakfast tomorrow,
we went straight to the hotel
and hit the hay early, haha!
(By now,
breakfast at the hotel
feels almost like a delightful obligation, wouldn't you agree?)
According to the article, Seoseobang Charcoal Grilled Dakgalbi (Yeondong Branch) operates from 11 AM to 2 AM, with the last order at 1 AM. It is closed every Wednesday.
The article emphasized that while the dakgalbi was delicious, they especially recommend the 'Mozaban Makguksu' (seaweed buckwheat noodles) to noodle lovers, praising its perfectly balanced and delicious flavor.
Seoseobang Charcoal Grilled Dakgalbi (Yeondong Branch) is located in a densely commercial area, making parking difficult. Therefore, it is advised to use nearby public parking lots.
According to the article, 3 servings of Mozaban Marinated Dakgalbi cost ~$33, and Mozaban Makguksu was ~$6. Other items included Black Pork Mozaban Kimchi Stew for ~$6, a bowl of rice for ~$1, Hallasan 21-degree soju for ~$3, and Mirinda Orange for ~$1.
The article mentioned that the Choco Brownie Sulbing was sweet due to the brownies and chocolate syrup. The milk shaved ice felt like homemade shaved ice, and it was compared to Songdo Baobing, with the overall value for money being deemed disappointing.
